These papers are peculi arly valuable in illustrating the family history as well as the various property of individuals, throughout the kingdom, during the time of the Great Rebellion. Of these, by the continued industry and accurate attention of Mr. Lemon, 'no lessthan one hundred and sixty seven folio volumes had been recovered and arranged, when (in 1825 also) he transmitted to me from this invaluable collection, the sequestra'tion-pa 'pers relating to Mr. Po'well, the father of Mil ton's first wife, in whibh Milton himself is par ticularly concerned and to Sir Christopher Milton, the brother of the poet. Other papers and letters, from the same office, alike unknown till now, and of the greatest service to the bio graphy of Milton, have since, at various times, been sent to me by this gentleman empowered as he was at all times so to do, from the very first exertion of his kindness, by the permission. It has been suggested, that to some readers of Milton they might not perhaps be unacceptable in a separate volume. To the candid notice of such, they are accordingly thus offered. Of my biographical attempt (such as it is) the materials have been drawn, as I formerly stated, form authentick sources. In it some new anecdotes relating to the history of Milton's friends, of his works, and of his times, were interwoven; to which additions are now made. These circumstances perhaps may plead as some apology for my rainness, in affecting to sketch the poet, whom the masterly hands of a Johnson and an Hayley have depicted; a rashness to which I was impelled by the persuation of others, that, to a new edition of his works, it is a custom to prefix the Life of the Author. To this custom indeed English biography has lately been indebted for a spirited acquisition; the Life of Milton, accompanying an edition of his Prose-Works, written by the Rev. Dr. Symmons; a composition, which, like those of Johnson and Hayley, opposes to my unadorned narration a very brilliant contrast. Cheerfully conceding the honour due to this work, I claim the liberty, however, of differing from the eloquent biographer in some political sentiments, and of refusing my assent to one or two of his assertions and literary opinions. There is something too etherial in the feelings of the poet - something too inimitable in his views - to comport with that vivid perception of the common-place, every-day, localized circumo stances of life, that is essential to the heart's blood of the patriot. The poet, like the metaphysician, is too much given to generalizing, to have his mind very strongly impressed with the weight and value of ordinary and isolated facts. His mind sweeps through the aggregate of the incidents and circum stances that constitute the natural and social world, giving only just so much attention to the several parts of which it is made up, as is necessary to constitute a sublime picture 0 the mighty whole. Sueh a man can scarcely become a patriot. Lie must, indeed, possess enlarged and liberal feelings - his sympathies must be with the multitude of his fellow-men - the sight of injustice and oppression must ever render him uneasy; but to be a patriot, it is not enough that he mourn or rejoice, as social misery or happiness predominates; he must be so strongly impressed with the enormity of social evils so much alive to the duties of every citizen in the struggle to annihilate them, and so thoroughly satisfied of the causes out of which they arise, as to be impelled forward into the arena of political strife, and encounter, at the hazard of liberty and of life, the deadly hostility of the agents of evil. The man of sirong oetieal perceptions and feelings, is not likely to he thus mox ed and operated upon, by the individual circumstances of others. But these are exceptions, and when we meet with them, either amongst our contemporaries, or associated with the worthies of by-gone times, they command our edmir ing reverence, and almost idolatrous homage.
