Book Solving the Enigma History of the Cryptanalytic Bombe

Download or read book Solving the Enigma History of the Cryptanalytic Bombe written by Jennifer Wilcox and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the German military grew in the late 1920s, it began looking for a better way to secure its communications. It found the answer in a new cryptographic machine called "Enigma." The Germans believe the encryption generated by the machine to be unbreakable. With a theoretical number of ciphering possibilities of 3 x 10114 their belief was not unjustified. However, they never reached that theoretical level of security. Nor did they count on the cryptanalytic abilities of their adversaries. This publication provides a history of this cryptanalytic bombe.

Book excerpt: Breaking the German Enigma codes was not only about brilliant mathematicians and professors at Bletchley Park. There is another aspect of the story which it is only now possible to tell. It takes in the exploits of spies, naval officers and ordinary British seamen who risked, and in some cases lost their lives snatching the vital Enigma codebooks from under the noses of Nazi officials and from sinking German ships and submarines. This book will tell the whole Enigma story: the original invention and use by German forces and how it was the Poles who first cracked, and passed on to the British - the key to the German airforce Enigma. The more complicated German Navy Enigma appeared to them to be unbreakable. Hugh Sebag-Montefiore - like his brother Simon a journalist and author - has unearthed files at the Ministry of Defence and further documents now declassified in the US. He has also traced and made contact with many of the last surviving witnesses to the Enigma story, including Paul Pailliole, who was head of French counterintelligence and has a detailed first hand knowledge of the spying and double crossing which took place in relation to Enigma.

Book Solving the Communion Enigma

Download or read book Solving the Communion Enigma written by Whitley Strieber and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author probes the ultimate significance behind today's increasing reports of UFOs, alien abductions, crop circles, and other unexplained phenomena-and what they mean for humanity's immediate future. In 1987 writer Whitley Strieber exposed the world to the truth about alien abduction in his landmark memoir, Communion. For the first time in years, Strieber revisits his encounter with alien intelligences-but now dramatically widens his search to explore how "the visitors" connect with today's persistent and globe-spanning reports of anomalous phenomena, such as crop circles, cattle mutilations, UFO sightings, alien abductions, near-death experiences, close encounters, and unexplained bodily implants. In his magisterial style, Strieber contextualizes these bizarre and unsettling reports with his own childhood memories of strange schools, sinister experiments, and family secrets. In exploring today's most convincing cases of unexplained phenomena, Strieber reasons that they are not unrelated events. Nor are they the result of mass delusion. In some of his most persuasive writing, Strieber argues that the wave of mysterious episodes marks a transition that humanity is undergoing right now. Against all conscious understanding, we are experiencing a broadened awareness of dimensions of reality that exist beyond our current perceptions.

Book excerpt: “An absorbing and thoroughly well documented account” of WWII naval intelligence and the Allied hunt for the Nazi code machine known as the Enigma (Warship). From the start of World War II to mid-1943, British and American naval forces fought a desperate battle against German submarine wolfpacks. And the Allies might have lost the struggle at sea without an astounding intelligence coup. Here, the author brings to life the race to break the German U-boat codes. As the Battle of the Atlantic raged, Hitler’s U-boats reigned. To combat the growing crisis, ingenious amateurs joined the nucleus of dedicated professionals at Bletchley Park to unlock the continually changing German naval codes. Their mission: to read the U-boat messages of Hitler’s cipher device, the Enigma. They first found success with the capture of U-110,—which yielded the Enigma machine itself and a trove of secret documents. Then the weather ship Lauenburg seized near the Arctic ice pack provided code settings for an entire month. Finally, two sailors rescued a German weather cipher that enabled the team at Bletchley to solve the Enigma after a year-long blackout. In “a highly recommended account with a wealth of materials” Seizing the Enigma tells the story of a determined corps of people who helped turn the tide of the war (Naval Historical Foundation).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Brilliant...Timely and necessary.” —Financial Times “Especially timely as we struggle to make sense of how it is that individuals and communities persist in holding beliefs that have been thoroughly discredited.” —Darren Frey, Science If reason is what makes us human, why do we behave so irrationally? And if it is so useful, why didn’t it evolve in other animals? This groundbreaking account of the evolution of reason by two renowned cognitive scientists seeks to solve this double enigma. Reason, they argue, helps us justify our beliefs, convince others, and evaluate arguments. It makes it easier to cooperate and communicate and to live together in groups. Provocative, entertaining, and undeniably relevant, The Enigma of Reason will make many reasonable people rethink their beliefs. “Reasonable-seeming people are often totally irrational. Rarely has this insight seemed more relevant...Still, an essential puzzle remains: How did we come to be this way?...Cognitive scientists Hugo Mercier and Dan Sperber [argue that] reason developed not to enable us to solve abstract, logical problems...[but] to resolve the problems posed by living in collaborative groups.” —Elizabeth Kolbert, New Yorker “Turns reason’s weaknesses into strengths, arguing that its supposed flaws are actually design features that work remarkably well.” —Financial Times “The best thing I have read about human reasoning. It is extremely well written, interesting, and very enjoyable to read.” —Gilbert Harman, Princeton University

Book Solving the UFO Enigma

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert L. Schroeder
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2011-10-04
  • ISBN : 9781452836812
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Solving the UFO Enigma written by Robert L. Schroeder and published by . This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description: Can the technology behind the UFO phenomenon now be explained by modern physics and by a close examination of the more credible UFO reports? Yes according to the new book "Solving the UFO Enigma: How Modern Physics is Revealing the Technology of UFOs" by Robert L. Schroeder. The idea that a subset of all UFO reports represent advanced craft of extraterrestrial origin has been around for a long time. But only recently has the science of physics developed theories which, when correlated with selected UFO data, point directly toward a likely explanation of this alien technology.Modern physics in its attempt to unify the fundamental forces of nature in a "Theory of Everything" has proposed theories that require the existence of up to eleven space-time dimensions and the possibility of entire universes existing side by side with our own. The author not only shows how physics has evolved to this point but he also looks at the unanswered questions of modern physics such as the origin of inertia, the mystery of quantum non-locality, the Higgs or "God" particle and the puzzle of the relative weakness of gravity. It is these unanswered questions, along with certain conjectures and pertinent UFO characteristics, that when incorporated with the latest cutting edge physics theories look to be the final keys to explaining UFO technology. The book does contain some of the math of the most important historical physics theories. Although the math isn't essential to understanding the basic theme of the book it is there for those who would like an even more in depth knowledge of modern physics. This proposed solution to UFO technology is based on some remarkable and rather exotic physics theories that are currently being tested at the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator in Geneva, Switzerland. Should these theories prove correct then there is a real possibility that UFO technology is within the reach of our earth civilization. Its development on our planet would open up whole new worlds, both literally and figuratively, to be discovered and explored.About the Author:Robert Schroeder recently retired after 26 years with a major computer company where he was involved in operations and product management. His educational background includes a BA in mathematics, an MBA and an associate's degree in aerospace engineering. He has closely followed developments in modern physics over the years and has researched the UFO phenomenon since the 1960's.Early Reviews of book: "I recommend this book to all readers who are; 1) Scientific adventurers, 2) Technical detectives and 3) Curious thinkers. This book is a classic on UFOs." - Milo Wolff, Ph.D. Dr. Wolff is a retired professor of physics and has worked for MIT, NASA and the United Nations. "As science grapples to understand concepts such as dark matter and hidden dimensions....Robert Schroeder takes the reader on a thrilling voyage of discovery where exotic physics might finally help us solve one of the greatest and most profound mysteries of our time." - Nick Pope is the former head of the British Ministry of Defense unit responsible for investigating UFO reports in the United Kingdom. He served in this position from 1991 to 1994.
