Book Review and Evaluation of Alternative Technologies for Demilitarization of Assembled Chemical Weapons

Download or read book Review and Evaluation of Alternative Technologies for Demilitarization of Assembled Chemical Weapons written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-12-24 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines seven disposal technologies being considered by the U.S. government as alternative methods to the process of incineration for destroying mortars, rockets, land mines, and other weapons that contain chemical warfare agents, such as mustard gas. These weapons are considered especially dangerous because they contain both chemical warfare agent and explosive materials in an assembled package that must be disassembled for destruction. The study identifies the strengths and weaknesses and advantages and disadvantages of each technology and assesses their potential for full-scale implementation.

Book Survey of Progress in Chemistry

Download or read book Survey of Progress in Chemistry written by Arthur Scott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey of Progress in Chemistry, Volume 5 is a collection of papers that provides the transmission of instructive material and information from the real chemical world to the classroom teacher or instructor. One paper reviews the HSAB principle (hard and soft acid bases) and notes that it can be regarded as an experimental principle to describe various chemical phenomena in both qualitative and quantitative terms. The principle can be applied in correlating and storing large amounts of data and in predicting results. Another paper shows that an experiment concerning eliminations induced either by halide ions in dipolar aprotic solvents or by mercaptide ions in alcohols can be essentially normal E2 reactions. The microwave spectrum can also be used in identifying compounds and in quantitative analysis. Another paper discusses the physical and chemical consequences of electron hydration and its many possible uses such as in the treatment of cancer and food preservation. One paper examines the fluorescence processes which occur in a liquid scintillator, including the uses of liquid scintillation in determining the solubility of gases or the production of isotopes. This collection is suitable for professors in chemistry, students who are taking advanced courses in chemistry, and other groups of chemists who are interested to know what is happening beyond their specialized work and research.

Book Emerging Nanotechnologies for Water Treatment

Download or read book Emerging Nanotechnologies for Water Treatment written by Yanbiao Liu and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid population growth, urbanisation and industrialisation have caused serious problems in terms of water pollution and the supply of safe water. Solutions for monitoring pollutants in water and for removing them are urgently needed and they must be both efficient and sustainable. Recent advances in emerging environmental nanotechnologies provide promising solutions for these issues. The physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials can be tailored by controlling attributes such as their size, shape, composition, and surface, so that they can be both highly specific and highly efficient. This makes them perfect platforms for a variety of environmental applications including sensing, treatment and remediation. Providing an array of cutting-edge nanotechnology research in water applications, including sensing, treatment, and remediation, as well as a discussion of progress in the rational design and engineering of nanomaterials for environmental applications, this book is a valuable reference for researchers working in applications for nanotechnology, environmental chemistry and environmental engineering as well as those working in the water treatment industry.

Book Nature Not Mocked Places People And Science

Download or read book Nature Not Mocked Places People And Science written by Peter Day and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-02-10 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often forget that the science underpinning our contemporary civilization is not a marmoreal edifice. On the contrary, at each moment in its development over past centuries, it grew and advanced through the efforts of individuals and the institutions they created. As Director of the Royal Institution and its Davy Faraday Research Laboratory throughout the 1990s, the author had a unique vantage point to observe how places and people condition the way science has been shaped in the past and continues to be today. The author's background as a practicing solid state chemist, with a lively concern for issues engaging public awareness of science, have led him to recognize and celebrate, not just the remarkable contributions and unusual lives of past scientific heroes like Rumford and Faraday, but also their present day successors. Over the years, this insight has resulted in a wide variety of articles and essays, spread through many publications; a selection of these is collected in this book. The tapestry of science does not just consist of facts uncovered about the natural world and the laws that connect them. As perhaps the finest product of the human mind, its substance and direction are strongly conditioned (some might even say determined) by the people drawn to take part in it and the environments in which they work. This book is an edited collection of essays on aspects of the lives of some famous (as well as less well-known) scientists and places where science is carried out, combined with popular accounts of some of the science the author himself has been involved in. Although it focuses on the Royal Institution and some of those associated with it, it ranges more widely to embrace some contemporary scientists known personally to the author, each of whom had an unusual and distinctive career. At the same time, the science itself, while at the cutting edge, is placed firmly in its historical perspective. The essays are collected into themes, each of which is prefaced and put in context by a short introduction./a
