Book The Scattering of Light and Other Electromagnetic Radiation

Download or read book The Scattering of Light and Other Electromagnetic Radiation written by Milton Kerker and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scattering of Light and Other Electromagnetic Radiation discusses the theory of electromagnetic scattering and describes some practical applications. The book reviews electromagnetic waves, optics, the interrelationships of main physical quantities and the physical concepts of optics, including Maxwell's equations, polarization, geometrical optics, interference, and diffraction. The text explains the Rayleigh2 theory of scattering by small dielectric spheres, the Bessel functions, and the Legendre functions. The author also explains how the scattering functions for a homogenous sphere change depending on different physical parameters such as the optical size, the complex refractive index, and the angle of observation. The author addresses the assignment of a complex dielectric constant and a corresponding refractive index to plasma when an alternating electrical field is applied that will make the plasma exhibit conductivity and polarization. In a liquid, the author points out that the intensity of scattering is one or two orders of magnitude less than that found in a gaseous system; he explains that the molecules are no longer acting as incoherent nor as randomly located scatterers. This book can be useful for physicists, chemists, biochemists, and engineers whose work includes research utilizing light scattering in the study of certain gases, pure liquids, molecular solutions, macromolecules, polymers, and glass.

Book Electromagnetic Scattering and its Applications

Download or read book Electromagnetic Scattering and its Applications written by L. P. Bayvel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever a wave encounters an obstacle a number of processes occur. For large objects we envisage reflection and transmission with refraction and, in ·many cases, absorption. These phenomena can be described with the aid of ray tracing or geometrical optics, but they do not completely describe the interaction. Diffraction also occurs, and this can only be described by the properties of waves, wave optics. When the object is less than or of the order of the wavelength these processes cannot be so simply understood. The whole interaction is governed by wave optics, and the interactions are lumped together under the heading 'scattering'. Associated with the above there may be changes in frequency of the wave. This may arise due to the Doppler effect if the obstacle is moving or changing in time in any way. Also there can be changes in the energy of the object which must be matched by the wave, such as, for example, in the Raman effect.

Book Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media

Download or read book Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media written by Akira Ishimaru and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media, Volume 1: Single Scattering and Transport Theory presents the fundamental formulations of wave propagation and scattering in random media in a unified and systematic manner, as well as useful approximation techniques applicable to a variety of different situations. The emphasis is on single scattering theory and transport theory. The reader is introduced to the fundamental concepts and useful results of the statistical wave propagation theory. This volume is comprised of 13 chapters, organized around three themes: waves in random scatterers, waves in random continua, and rough surface scattering. The first part deals with the scattering and propagation of waves in a tenuous distribution of scatterers, using the single scattering theory and its slight extension to explain the fundamentals of wave fluctuations in random media without undue mathematical complexities. Many practical problems of wave propagation and scattering in the atmosphere, oceans, and other random media are discussed. The second part examines transport theory, also known as the theory of radiative transfer, and includes chapters on wave propagation in random particles, isotropic scattering, and the plane-parallel problem. This monograph is intended for engineers and scientists interested in optical, acoustic, and microwave propagation and scattering in atmospheres, oceans, and biological media.

Book Wave Scattering By Small Bodies Creating Materials With A Desired Refraction Coefficient And Other Applications

Download or read book Wave Scattering By Small Bodies Creating Materials With A Desired Refraction Coefficient And Other Applications written by Alexander G Ramm and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a research monograph. An asymptotically exact solution of the many-body scattering problem is given under the assumption a ≪ d ≪ λ, where a is the characteristic size of a small particle, d is the smallest distance between particles and λ is the wavelength in the medium in which the particles are embedded. Scattering of scalar and electromagnetic waves is considered. Heat transfer theory in the medium in which many small bodies are embedded is developed. Quantum-mechanical theory of scattering by many potentials with small support is constructed. On the basis of these theoretical results, important applications are presented. First, a method for creating materials with a desired refraction coefficient is given. Secondly, a method for creating wave-focusing materials is developed. Technological problems to be solved for practical usage of these applied results are discussed. This book contains the contents of the author's earlier monograph, published in 2013. New appendices, based on the author's review papers published after 2013, are added.

Book Spectral and Scattering Theory for Wave Propagation in Perturbed Stratified Media

Download or read book Spectral and Scattering Theory for Wave Propagation in Perturbed Stratified Media written by Ricardo Weder and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propagation of acoustic and electromagnetic waves in stratified media is a subject that has profound implications in many areas of applied physics and in engineering, just to mention a few, in ocean acoustics, integrated optics, and wave guides. See for example Tolstoy and Clay 1966, Marcuse 1974, and Brekhovskikh 1980. As is well known, stratified media, that is to say media whose physical properties depend on a single coordinate, can produce guided waves that propagate in directions orthogonal to that of stratification, in addition to the free waves that propagate as in homogeneous media. When the stratified media are perturbed, that is to say when locally the physical properties of the media depend upon all of the coordinates, the free and guided waves are no longer solutions to the appropriate wave equations, and this leads to a rich pattern of wave propagation that involves the scattering of the free and guided waves among each other, and with the perturbation. These phenomena have many implications in applied physics and engineering, such as in the transmission and reflexion of guided waves by the perturbation, interference between guided waves, and energy losses in open wave guides due to radiation. The subject matter of this monograph is the study of these phenomena.

Book Scattering and Propagation in Random Media

Download or read book Scattering and Propagation in Random Media written by North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development. Electromagnetic Wave Propagation Panel. Specialists' Meeting and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of scattering and propagation in random media is one that has implications for the design, development and operation of most military systems that radiate energy as a means of accomplishing their funtion. Primary emphasis is on scattering and transmission in the atmosphere; however, other related random medium effects are not excluded. Modern methods of characterizing random media, mathematical methods and their applicability, effects on electromagnetic waves and the interpretation of these effects to specific system applications are described. The region of the spectrum considered is essentially unlimited and ranges from very long waves to optics. The performance of existing surveillance communication and navigation systems as well as the design of future systems is influenced by the propagation of energy via random media. An understanding of the nature of the medium and its impact on system design and performance is essential to the NATO community.
