Book excerpt: En la Memoria "Solución numérica de ecuaciones lineales mediante bases de Schauder" se presentan tres nuevos métodos numéricos para la resolución de ecuaciones funcionales lineales que se plantean como operadores lineales entre espacios de Banach de funciones. Las técnicas envueltas en la expresión de los métodos planteados son variadas siendo las bases de Schauder, de las que se hace una revisión en el capítulo primero, la herramienta fundamental en ellos. En el capítulo segundo se presenta el primero de los métodos. La idea fundamental del primer método planteado consiste en suponer que el espacio Y tiene una base de Schauder de forma que se conocen las preimágenes de todos y cada uno de sus términos mediante T. Se establece además la convergencia del método así como una cota del error que se comete y se aplica el método presentado para resolver un problema de contorno concreto. En el capítulo tercero se aborda el segundo de los métodos propuestos para resolver (P). Es un método basado en mínimos cuadrados. Se supone que el espacio X tiene una base de Schauder y que Y está dotado de un producto escalar. Las proyecciones ortogonales de Y0 sobre ciertos subespacios asociados a las imágenes de los vectores de la base de Schauder de X proporcionan una aproximación de los coeficientes de X0 en la base. En la última sección del capítulo se aplica el método expuesto para un ejemplo numérico concreto. En el capítulo cuarto se presenta un método numérico que generaliza el desarrollo en el capítulo anterior, en el sentido de que el espacio Y del problema (P) no tiene que ser necesariamente Hilbert. El papel de la sucesión de proyecciones ortogonales del capítulo anterior es desempeñado ahora por cierta sucesión de mejores aproximaciones. Como aplicación se hace un estudio numérico de la ecuación de Volterra de una variable en un espacio Lp. El capítulo quinto se dedica a comparar los métodos propuestos con los métodos de Galerkin y de colocación. It is first of all a comprehensive but concise text that covers the recently developed and widely applicable methods of qualitative choice analysis, illustrating the general theory through simulation models of automobile demand and use. It is also a detailed study of automobile demand and use, presenting forecasts based on these powerful new techniques. The book develops the general principles that underlie qualitative choice models that are now being applied in numerous fields in addition to transportation, such as housing, labor, energy, communications, and criminology. The general form, derivation, and estimation of qualitative choice models are explained, and the major models - logit, probit, and GEV - are discussed in detail. And continuous/discrete models are introduced. In these, qualitative choice methods and standard regression techniques are combined to analyze situations that neither alone can accurately forecast. Summarizing previous research on auto demand, the book shows how qualitative choice methods can be used by applying them to specific auto-related decisions as the aggregate of individuals' choices. The simulation model that is constructed is a significant improvement over older models, and should prove more useful to agencies and organizations requiring accurate forecasting of auto demand and use for planning and policy development. The book concludes with an actual case study based on a model designed for the investigations of the California Energy Commission. Kenneth Train is Visiting Associate Professor in Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and Director of Economic Research at Cambridge Systematics, Inc., also in Berkeley.
