Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exciting field of biblical archaeology has revolutionized our understanding of the Bible -- and no one has done more to popularise this vast store of knowledge than Israel Finkelstein and Neil Silberman, who revealed what we now know about when and why the Bible was first written in The Bible Unearthed. Now, with David and Solomon, they do nothing less than help us to understand the sacred kings and founding fathers of western civilization. David and his son Solomon are famous in the Bible for their warrior prowess, legendary loves, wisdom, poetry, conquests, and ambitious building programmes. Yet thanks to archaeology's astonishing finds, we now know that most of these stories are myths. Finkelstein and Silberman show us that the historical David was a bandit leader in a tiny back-water called Jerusalem, and how -- through wars, conquests and epic tragedies like the exile of the Jews in the centuries before Christ and the later Roman conquest -- David and his successor were reshaped into mighty kings and even messiahs, symbols of hope to Jews and Christians alike in times of strife and despair and models for the great kings of Europe. A landmark work of research and lucid scholarship by two brilliant luminaries, David and Solomon recasts the very genesis of western history in a whole new light.

Book King Solomon and the Bee

Download or read book King Solomon and the Bee written by Dalia Hardof Renberg and published by Crocodile Books. This book was released on 2010-01-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day, when King Solomon was resting in his garden, a small bee accidentally stung the great king on his nose. Furious, the king summoned all possible offenders and demanded to know who had dared to sting him. A small bee came forward and, as it pleaded for the king’s forgiveness, offered to repay him. King Solomon was amused by the bee’s earnest proposal, for how could such a little bee repay such a powerful king? Dalia Hardof Renberg’s simple adaptation of this traditional story, pared with Ruth Heller’s glorious illustrations, is a surprising and charming tale of how one small bee keeps its mighty promise.

Book Solomons Temple

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Hamblin
  • Publisher : Thames and Hudson
  • Release : 2007-06-12

  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Solomons Temple written by William Hamblin and published by Thames and Hudson. This book was released on 2007-06-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only up-to-date illustrated account of one of the most intriguing and influential buildings in history. The Temple of Solomon has been the focus of profound spiritual reverence for over three thousand years. From its Bronze Age antecedents in the portable shrines of nomadic tribes, through countless permutations in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the idea of the Temple of Solomon—a place of communion between God and man—has proven endlessly alluring. The sacred building itself was destroyed more than once, on the last occasion by the Romans in AD 70, yet the great church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, the headquarters of the Templars, and numerous medieval cathedrals were all conceived as symbolic re-creations of Solomon's original. Medieval magicians practiced magic to harness the demons who were believed to have constructed the Temple, and mystics of all faiths had visions of a celestial Temple, mirroring that on earth, where divine secrets would be revealed. Solomon's Temple draws on holy texts and mystic writings, works of art and architecture, modern reconstructions, and photographs to reveal the myriad ways in which the Temple and the sacred ground on which it stood have inspired mankind through the ages. 200 illustrations, 130 in color.

Book The History of Saul David and Solomon

Download or read book The History of Saul David and Solomon written by James Allen Moseley and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-11-09 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Saul, David, and Solomon are inextricably entwined, but they are scattered in the Bible between the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Chronicles, and 1 and 2 Kings. This book tells you the full, true story of Israel's Greatest Kings in a single, uninterrupted narrative. Samuel, the righteous Judge and Prophet, anoints Saul, a Benjamite, the tallest of his countrymen, as Israel's first King. As Saul disobeys God and declines into madness, defeat, and suicide, David, the shepherd from Bethlehem, of the tribe of Judah, arises to kill the giant Goliath and become the King's son-in-law and rebel leader on the run. Finally, David becomes King of Judah and then King of Israel, and the House of Saul loses its royal standing. David is a man after God's own heart, but his deliberate sins - adultery and murder - result in bloodshed and civil war. His son, Solomon, secures the throne over the heads of his older brothers, and receives unparalleled wisdom, wealth, and power from God. He builds the First Temple, but then falls into apostasy. The story of these men covers the transition of Israel from a theocracy, ruled by Judges accountable directly to God, to a monarchy, with all the failings of men. If you are a believer, this book will enhance your devotions by helping you know the Biblical narrative more intimately. If you are a skeptic, its logic will challenge your doubts. Here you will discover facets of this era - surprising things in plain sight - in the ink on the pages of Scripture - but that many have overlooked.

Download or read book Development of an Icon written by John W. Herbst and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most extensive royal accounts in the Hebrew Bible are those of kings David (the "Succession Narrative," usually identified as 2 Sam 9-20 and 1 Kgs 1-2) and Solomon (the "Solomon Story," 1 Kgs 3-11). Yet, even though Solomon immediately follows David in the Deuteronomistic History, little has been done to correlate these accounts. But what if these passages were meant to be read together? Utilizing the "Double Redaction" theory, Herbst proposes that an exilic "Deuteronomist" inserted the Succession Narrative into the Deuteronomistic History, then revised the Solomon Story in light of this addition. His key contribution was 1 Kings 1-2, a passage designed to connect the two larger sections, highlighting the similarities and differences of the two kings. Interpreting the composition history of 2 Samuel and 1 Kings in this way gives new insight into the Deuteronomist's views regarding kings and kingship. This approach also solves many of the problems of the Solomon story, in which the narrator appears to simultaneously praise and criticize Solomon. And along the way, Herbst offers new insights into individual passages, further enhancing our understanding of the message of the Deuteronomistic History.
