Book excerpt: Designed as an introduction to solid-state and condensed-matter physics, this textbook is ideal for one-semester graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in materials science. The new third edition includes a chapter on the properties of amorphous solids, and discusses recent progress insuch areas as basic crystal structure, superconductivity, diffraction, defects, dislocations, specific heat, phonons, thermal and electrical conductivities, and the field of solid-state studies. Many textual changes have been made to clarify certain points and short sections have been added onlow-dimensional semiconducting structures and on magnetic materials. Extra problems have been added and answers to all problems are provided. The presentation is direct and to-the-point, proceeding straight to the core topics in the field.

Book Treatise on Solid State Chemistry

Download or read book Treatise on Solid State Chemistry written by N. Hannay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last quarter-century has been marked by the extremely rapid growth of the solid-state sciences. They include what is now the largest subfield of physics, and the materials engineering sciences have likewise flourished. And, playing an active role throughout this vast area of science and engineer ing have been very large numbers of chemists. Yet, even though the role of chemistry in the solid-state sciences has been a vital one and the solid-state sciences have, in turn, made enormous contributions to chemical thought, solid-state chemistry has not been recognized by the general body of chemists as a major subfield of chemistry. Solid-state chemistry is not even well defined as to content. Some, for example, would have it include only the quantum chemistry of solids and would reject thermodynamics and phase equilibria; this is nonsense. Solid-state chemistry has many facets, and one of the purposes of this Treatise is to help define the field. Perhaps the most general characteristic of solid-state chemistry, and one which helps differentiate it from solid-state physics, is its focus on the chemical composition and atomic configuration of real solids and on the relationship of composition and structure to the chemical and physical properties of the solid. Real solids are usually extremely complex and exhibit almost infinite variety in their compositional and structural features.

Book Polymorphism in Molecular Crystals

Download or read book Polymorphism in Molecular Crystals written by Joel Bernstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymorphism - the multiplicity of structures or forms - is a term that is used in many disciplines. In chemistry it refers to the existence of more than one crystal structure for a particular chemical substance. The properties of a substance are determined by its composition and by its structure. In the last two decades, there has been a sharp rise in the interest in polymorphic systems, as an intrinsically interesting phenomenon and as an increasingly important component in the development and marketing of a variety of materials based on organic molecules (e.g. pharmaceuticals, dyes and pigments, explosives, etc.). This book summarizes and brings up to date the current knowledge and understanding of polymorphism of molecular crystals, and concentrates it in one comprehensive source. The book will be an invaluable reference for students, researchers, and professionals in the field.

Book Crystal Field Engineering of Solid State Laser Materials

Download or read book Crystal Field Engineering of Solid State Laser Materials written by Brian Henderson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-07-17 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the underlying science and design of laser materials. It emphasizes the principles of crystal-field engineering and discusses the basic physical concepts that determine laser gain and nonlinear frequency conversion in optical crystals. Henderson and Bartram develop the predictive capabilities of crystal-field engineering to show how modification of the symmetry and composition of optical centers can improve laser performance. They also discuss applications of the principles of crystal-field engineering to a variety of optical crystals in relation to the performances of laser devices. This book will be of considerable interest to physical, chemical and material scientists and to engineers involved in the science and technology of solid state lasers.
