Book Characterization of Electric Solid Propellant Pulsed Microthrusters

Download or read book Characterization of Electric Solid Propellant Pulsed Microthrusters written by Matthew Scott Glascock and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Electric solid propellants are an attractive option for space propulsion because they are ignited by applied electric power only. In this work, the behavior of pulsed microthruster devices utilizing such a material is investigated. These devices are similar in function and operation to the pulsed plasma thruster, which typically uses Teflon as propellant. A Faraday probe, Langmuir triple probe, residual gas analyzer, pendulum thrust stand and high speed camera are utilized as diagnostic devices. These thrusters are made in batches, of which a few devices were tested experimentally in vacuum environments. Results indicate a plume electron temperature of about 1.7 eV, with an electron density between 1011 and 1014 cm−3. According to thermal equilibrium and adiabatic expansion calculations, these relatively hot electrons are mixed with ~2000 K neutral and ion species, forming a non-equilibrium gas. From time-of-flight analysis, this gas mixture plume has an effective velocity of 1500-1650 m/s on centerline. The ablated mass of this plume is 215 [mu]g on average, of which an estimated 0.3% is ionized species while 45+̲11% is ablated at negligible relative speed. This late-time ablation occurs on a time scale three times that of the 0.5 ms pulse discharge, and does not contribute to the measured 0.21 mN-s impulse per pulse. Similar values have previously been measured in pulsed plasma thrusters. These observations indicate the electric solid propellant material in this configuration behaves similar to Teflon in an electrothermal pulsed plasma thruster"--Abstract, page iv.

Book Solid State Digital Propulsion Cluster Thrusters for Small Satellites Using High Performance Electrically Controlled Extinguishable Solid Propellants

Download or read book Solid State Digital Propulsion Cluster Thrusters for Small Satellites Using High Performance Electrically Controlled Extinguishable Solid Propellants written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrically controlled extinguishable solid propellants (ESCSP) are capable of multiple ignitions, extinguishments and throttle control by the application of electrical power. Both core and end burning no moving parts ECESP grains/motors to three inches in diameter have now been tested. Ongoing research has led to a newer family of even higher performance ECESP providing up to 10% higher Isp, manufacturing ease, and significantly higher electrical conduction. The high conductivity was not found to be desirable for larger motors; however it is ideal for downward scaling to micro and pico-propulsion applications with a web thickness of less than 0.125 inch. As a solid solution propellant, this ECESP is molecularly uniform, having no granular structure. Because of this homogeneity and workable viscosity it can be directly cast into thin layers or vacuum cast into complex geometries. Both coaxial and grain stacks have been demonstrated. Combining individual propellant coaxial grains and/or grain stacks together form three-dimensional arrays of modular cluster thrusters. Adoption of fabless manufacturing methods and standards from the electronics industry will provide custom, highly reproducible micro-propulsion arrays and clusters at low costs. These stack and cluster thruster designs provide a small footprint saving spacecraft surface area for solar panels and/or experiments. The simplicity of these thrusters will enable their broad use on micro-pico satellites for primary propulsion, ACS and formation flying applications. Larger spacecraft may find uses for ECESP thrusters on extended booms, on-orbit refueling, pneumatic actuators, and gas generators.

Crosby, International Space University e-mail: [email protected] For the sixth annual ISU Symposium the theme was "Smaller Satellites: Bigger Business? Concepts, Applications and Markets for Micro/Nanosatellites in a New Information World". Thus, the Symposium addressed the crucial question: are small satellites the saviour of space programmes around the world It did this from the unique perspective of the International Space today? University - the interdisciplinary, international and intercultural perspective. This Symposium brought together a variety of people working on small satellites - engineers, scientists, planners, providers, operators, policy makers and business executives, together with representatives from regulatory bodies, from national and international organizations, and from the finance sector, and also entrepreneurs. Discussion and debate were encouraged, based on the papers presented and those published here.
