Book Solid Freeform Fabrication A New Direction in Manufacturing

Download or read book Solid Freeform Fabrication A New Direction in Manufacturing written by J.J. Beaman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid Freeform Fabrication is a set of manufacturing processes that are capable of producing complex freeform solid objects directly from a computer model of an object without part-specific tooling or knowledge. In essence, these methods are miniature manufacturing plants which come complete with material handling, information processing and materials processing. As such, these methods require technical knowledge from many disciplines; therefore, researchers, engineers, and students in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering and Materials and Computer Science will all find some interest in this subject. Particular subareas of concern include manufacturing methods, polymer chemistry, computational geometry, control, heat transfer, metallurgy, ceramics, optics, and fluid mechanics. History of technology specialists may also find Chapter 1 of interest. Although this book covers the spectrum of different processes, the emphasis is clearly on the area in which the authors have the most experience, thermal laser processing. In particular, the authors have all been developers and inventors of techniques for the Selective Laser Sintering process and laser gas phase techniques (Selective Area Laser Deposition). This is a research book on the subject of Solid Freeform Fabrication.

Book Solid Freeform and Additive Fabrication

Download or read book Solid Freeform and Additive Fabrication written by Duane Dimos and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid freeform (SFF) and additive fabrication processes are defining a revolutionary approach for materials manufacturing, leading to a capability for producing parts quicker, cheaper and with more functionality than previously thought possible. The key aspect of these direct fabrication techniques is the ability to deposit or build up material only where it is required to produce finished or nearly finished parts. While tremendous engineering progress has been made in this field, materials issues associated with layer-wise additive processes are just beginning to be addressed in a comprehensive manner. This book brings together experts in the SFF field to discuss recent developments in the processing of ceramics, metals, polymers, and composites, with a focus on the processing-structure-property relationships associated with these freeform and additive fabrication techniques. Topics include: organics, composites and laser CVD; direct metal fabrication; ceramic freeform fabrication; and ceramic freeform and layered direct fabrication.

Book Solid Freeform Manufacturing

Download or read book Solid Freeform Manufacturing written by D. Kochan and published by . This book was released on 1993-10-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The direct generation of physical objects based on three dimensional computer aided design (3D-CAD) data is currently a manufacturing process of major importance. The dynamic development in this new high tech area is characterized by the different kinds of equipment commercially available at present, as well as the many new procedures that have been patented or are under development. This book provides a major contribution to progress in industrial applications through its in-depth descriptions of the new technological methodologies and their implications in the planning and shaping of design. All the essential commercially available systems are discussed in detail, and some important systems currently in development are also reviewed. Starting with the necessary 3D-Geometrical Modelling the general tasks for process realization are explained. Further essential main points covered in the volume are: Characteristics of the most suitable areas of application in the manufacturing industry. Systematic approaches for decision-making for the most suitable equipment and usages (whether to invest or job out). Methodical support for proper utilization of selected equipment. Efficient combination with current manufacturing technologies. Technological and economical aspects for evaluation and comparison of other traditional procedures. The book will be of particular interest to workers and researchers in the fields of manufacturing (especially tool making), engineering, marketing, and CAD/CAM; CIM. The book is also suitable for students of engineering, management and economic disciplines.

Book Data Driven Modeling for Additive Manufacturing of Metals

Download or read book Data Driven Modeling for Additive Manufacturing of Metals written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-10-09 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive manufacturing (AM) is the process in which a three-dimensional object is built by adding subsequent layers of materials. AM enables novel material compositions and shapes, often without the need for specialized tooling. This technology has the potential to revolutionize how mechanical parts are created, tested, and certified. However, successful real-time AM design requires the integration of complex systems and often necessitates expertise across domains. Simulation-based design approaches, such as those applied in engineering product design and material design, have the potential to improve AM predictive modeling capabilities, particularly when combined with existing knowledge of the underlying mechanics. These predictive models have the potential to reduce the cost of and time for concept-to-final-product development and can be used to supplement experimental tests. The National Academies convened a workshop on October 24-26, 2018 to discuss the frontiers of mechanistic data-driven modeling for AM of metals. Topics of discussion included measuring and modeling process monitoring and control, developing models to represent microstructure evolution, alloy design, and part suitability, modeling phases of process and machine design, and accelerating product and process qualification and certification. These topics then led to the assessment of short-, immediate-, and long-term challenges in AM. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
