Book excerpt: Solicitors' Accounts provides a user-friendly guide to a subject that often poses serious problems for students unfamiliar with the principles and practice of accounting. It provides comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of all areas required by the Law Society for business accounts and solicitors' accounts on the Legal Practice Course, including full coverage of double-entry book-keeping and final accounts of sole owners, partnerships and companies. It also deals with rules and the practical application of these accounts, including property transactions. Each chapter starts with an overview of the areas to be covered and also states the learning objectives the student should aim to achieve. At the end of each chapter there is a checklist of the key areas students must be able to understand, followed by graded self-test questions which suggest to the student how long they should spend completing them and what they should move onto next. Written by experienced LPC tutors, the guide is essential reading for students and reference source for attorneys.

Book The Ethics and Conduct of Lawyers in England and Wales

Download or read book The Ethics and Conduct of Lawyers in England and Wales written by Andrew Boon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this respected textbook examines the regulation and conduct of lawyers in England and Wales and addresses new developments in the field, including those in international practice, sexual misconduct, and the environment. Focusing on the practice of, and interrelationship between, solicitors and barristers, the book provides background to current arrangements while exploring contemporary rules of conduct, systems of regulation, and controversies. The four main parts cover client duties, wider obligations, key contexts, and regulation. Parts one to three provide an academic introduction to the subject of lawyers' ethics. They are suitable as a core text for a semester course at undergraduate level, providing grounding for vocational training, such as the Solicitors' Qualifying Examination. Comparisons are made with conduct rules applying in other leading common law jurisdictions where relevant. These parts also explore links between the subject of ethics and the development of lawyers' practical skills. Part four applies the general principles to three elements of regulation: practice, admission, and discipline. The approach throughout is socio-legal. While the essential law is described, relevant social science research informs consideration of issues and debates.

Twenty-four essays and a substantial introduction highlight the complexity and contradictions as marital law grapples with gender equality, the aftermath of recognizing gay and lesbian rights, abiding economic inequalities, and ?exotic? issues such as forced marriage and polygamy.

Book Financial management report

  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2010-07-06
  • ISBN : 9780102965339
  • Pages : 40 pages

Download or read book Financial management report written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-07-06 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ministry of Justice has made progress in improving its financial management, but it falls short of best practice in the consistency of its financial management approach, its understanding of its costs and the integration of its financial management systems and processes. The Ministry has made an important step forward in establishing a Value for Money Improvement Committee. This will assist the Ministry in delivering its future efficiency programme; integrating its financial systems; improving its cost data; and enhancing its internal financial management reporting. However, the Ministry is yet to produce a clear action plan to deliver its financial management initiatives and needs to do so over the next four months to demonstrate its commitment to continuing to improve its financial management. The Ministry does not yet understand, in sufficient detail, the costs of its activities within its prisons, the probation service and the courts. Procurement systems have been overhauled but this still leaves the 40 per cent of the Ministry's cost base relating to staff time. To address this, the Ministry has introduced major programmes to understand the costs of its activities in the National Offender Management Service and HM Courts Service but they are not due to be completed until at least 2012. The National Audit Office also notes that the Ministry's Finance Directorate does not have sufficient visibility of the costs of its policy proposals, reducing the effectiveness of the Ministry's financial control of its forward policy agenda.
