Book excerpt: An unforgettable novel based on the life of Ricky Richard Anywar, who at age fourteen was forced to fight as a soldier in the guerrilla army of notorious Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony Soldier Boy begins with the story of Ricky Richard Anywar, abducted in 1989 to fight with Joseph Kony's rebel army in the Ugandan civil war (one of Africa's longest running conflicts). Ricky is trained, armed, and forced to fight government soldiers alongside his brutal kidnappers, but never stops dreaming of escape. The story continues twenty years later, with a fictionalized character named Samuel, a boy deathly afraid of trusting anyone ever again. Samuel is representative of the thousands of child soldiers Ricky eventually helped rehabilitate as founder of the internationally acclaimed charity Friends of Orphans. Working closely with Ricky himself, debut author Keely Hutton has written an eye-opening book about a boy’s unbreakable spirit and indomitable courage in the face of unimaginable horror. This title has Common Core connections.

Secret Soldiers follows the journey of Thomas, a thirteen-year-old coal miner, who lies about his age to join the Claykickers, a specialized crew of soldiers known as “tunnelers,” in hopes of finding his missing older brother. Thomas works in the tunnels of the Western Front alongside three other soldier boys whose constant bickering and inexperience in mining may prove more lethal than the enemy digging toward them. But as they burrow deeper beneath the battlefield, the boys discover the men they hope to become and forge a bond of brotherhood. Book excerpt: On 28 June 1915, young James Martin sailed from Melbourne aboard the troopship Berrima – bound, ultimately, for Gallipoli. He was just fourteen years old. Soldier Boy is Jim's extraordinary true story, the story of a young and enthusiastic school boy who became Australia's youngest known Anzac. Four months after leaving his home country he would be numbered among the dead, just one of so many soldier boys who travelled halfway around the world for the chance of adventure. This is, however, just as much the story of Jim's mother, Amelia Martin. It is the heartbreaking tale of the mother who had to let him go, of his family who lost a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend. It is about Amelia's boy who, like so many others, just wanted to be in on the action.

Book Soldier Boy

Download or read book Soldier Boy written by Timothy James Bazzett and published by Rathole Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 when Tim Bazzett graduated from high school he'd had enough of academia and classroom drudgery, so he joined the army - and received an education he'd never imagined. Perhaps one of the most unlikely and inept citizen-soldiers since Gomer Pyle, Tim somehow survives the terrors and tribulations of basic training at "Fort Lost-in-the-Woods, Misery," and after further training in the mysteries of Morse code in Massachusetts and Maryland, the small-town innocent is launched overseas and into the larger world. In northern Turkey he finds himself a link in the outermost defenses of America during a Cold War he only imperfectly understands. There he sees poverty and hatred in the faces of children and is forced to confront his own faults and inner demons. Later on in Germany, no longer quite so innocent, he chases girls and dreams of being a rock star. But at the heart of Bazzett's narrative are the characters - the friends he makes along the way. For this is ultimately a book about friendship - and about growing up. In his first volume of memoirs, Bazzett made his Michigan hometown in the fifties come alive for all his readers. In Soldier Boy, his military experiences are made just as real. Get ready to laugh, and maybe cry a little too, as the irrepressible Reed City Boy rides again.

Book Boy Soldiers of the Great War

Download or read book Boy Soldiers of the Great War written by Richard van Emden and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the outbreak of the Great War, boys as young as twelve were caught up in a national wave of patriotism and, in huge numbers, volunteered to serve their country. The press, recruiting offices and the Government all contributed to the enlistment of hundreds of thousands of under-age soldiers in both Britain and the Empire. On joining up, these lads falsified their ages, often aided by parents who believed their sons’ obvious youth would make overseas service unlikely. These boys frequently enlisted together, training for a year or more in the same battalions before they were sent abroad. Others joined up but were soon sent to units already fighting overseas and short of men: these lads might undergo as little as eight weeks’ training. Boys served in the bloodiest battles of the war, fighting at Ypres, the Somme and on Gallipoli. Many broke down under the strain and were returned home once parents supplied birth certificates proving their youth. Other lads fought on bravely and were even awarded medals for gallantry: Jack Pouchot won the Distinguished Conduct Medal aged just fifteen. Others became highly efficient officers, such as Acting Captain Philip Lister and Second Lieutenant Reginald Battersby, both of whom were commissioned at fifteen and fought in France. In this, the final update of his ground-breaking book, Richard van Emden reveals new hitherto unknown stories and adds many more unseen images. He also proves that far more boys enlisted in the British Army under-age than originally estimated, providing compelling evidence that as many as 400,000 served.

Book Soldier Boy

Download or read book Soldier Boy written by Roy Eaton and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I thoroughly enjoyed reading Roy's "Soldier Boy." He brings back many memories of the New York Military Academy and has done a fine job. Roy was always a winner, and nothing has changed. --Donald J. Trump Plucked from the comfortable and familiar surroundings of his close-knit family and community, the author, Roy Eaton, at the age of eight, reluctantly embarks on a journey of discovery that, at times, will place him in conflict with his peers, his loved ones, and, himself. Cast into a world where one's existence is determined by the survival of the fittest, and one in which success often promulgates failure, Eaton struggles to overcome his insecurities and the discouraging profiling of others as he attempts to find himself and identify his purpose in life. Soldier Boy is a story of perseverance, of overcoming disappointment and failure, of defying the misuse of authority, of rectifying injustice, and of coming of age. Eaton's journey is a testament to the drive to succeed that exists in each of us, and to those whom have made our passage through life a memorable and rewarding experience. Author Roy Eaton, a graduate of New York Military Academy, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania Military College, an M.A.T. from Connecticut College, and a commission in the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Corps. Roy taught mathematics and wrestling at St. Bernard High School in Uncasville, Connecticut, and was recently inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. He has been included in the publication "Who's Who Among America's Teachers," and was elected by his faculty to the school's Board of Trustees. He was selected as the first team coach by the Connecticut Freestyle Wrestling Federation, and his high school team has been cited by the state's Governor and Legislature for their outstanding performance. Roy retired in 1996, and currently resides with his wife Debra in Naples, Florida.
