Book excerpt: In this new book, the development of an altogether new uniform for troops of the United States Army, a few years after the Civil War, has never been told so well or so comprehensively. In this volume, the sequel to the authors highly praised Army Blue: The Uniform of Uncle Sams Regulars, 1848-1873, John Langellier continues the story of the evolution of American army uniforms during a critical period that saw experimentation and innovation finally surmount conservatism to produce some of the more practically functional and aesthetically appealing martial clothing in American history. The breadth of Langelliers research, coupled with his years of accumulated expertise in the study of historical army uniforms, is evident throughout, and together make this book the most thorough and precise accounting the topic has ever received.

Download or read book Uniforms of the German Soldier written by Alejandro M. de Quesada and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolution of the German Army uniform from 1870 to the present day, using nearly 800 photographs to offer the reader an unparalleled analysis. Each image is accompanied by a detailed caption, explaining interesting aspects of the soldiers uniform, insignia and equipment. It begins with the German Empire at its height, with the iconic spiked Pickelhaube and the colonial troops in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and moves on to the field-grey uniforms of the First World War. After 1918, the uniforms of the Reichswehr and the Freikorps are detailed, and then those of the revived Wehrmacht up to the end of the Second World War. The post-war years saw the establishment of the Bundeswehr in the West and East Germanys Nationalen Volksarmee, facing each other across the border of a divided Germany, before reunification in 1991.No other countrys army has undergone such changes in the past century-and-a-half, and this book provides a unique visual record of those changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the way the battlefield has evolved over the last ten years, the soldier's equipment has had to evolve accordingly. Although the media often shows the US Army Boys right in the heart of the fighting in Afghanistan, and up until recently in Iraq, their equipment, material, and weapons have never been shown in detail. This book has now done this, drawing up an exhaustive list of the equipment used by the US Army's infantryman (but also the helicopter pilots and the armored vehicle drivers) - from the boots to the wrist computer, via the assault rifle and the winter uniform - and the programs intended to make the soldier even quicker, even more effective and better protected.

Book U S Army Uniforms and Equipment 1889

Download or read book U S Army Uniforms and Equipment 1889 written by Quartermaster General of the Army and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1986-06-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rare book contains not only complete specifications but detailed line drawings of virtually every item of uniform and equipment issued. It is a valuable reference for articles used during the 1870s and 1880s, the period of the Indian wars. For much of the nineteenth century, the production of military clothing and equipment was geared to national emergencies. During the Mexican and Civil wars, the hardpressed Quartermaster Department was forced to rely on civilian and, later, European suppliers. A contract system too often resulted in profiteering, inferior goods, and administrative confusion. By 1887 reforms in the system were accompanied by strict specifications for matäriel, which were published by the War Department in 1889 and distributed to fewer than sixty officers in the Quartermaster Department. Never before reprinted, this rare book contains not only complete specifications but detailed line drawings of virtually every item of uniform and equipment issued, from mosquito bars and tent stoves to overalls for mounted men and uniform coat buttons ("the burnishing to be done in the best manner known to the trade"). This valuable reference for articles used by the army during the period of the Indian wars will be of special interest to collectors, historians, archaeologists, curators, and antique dealers.
