Download or read book Solar Energy Utilization written by Hafit Yüncü and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until very recently, energy supply of the world has been treated as being nearly inexhaustible. Nowadays about 90 percent of the energy used is obtained from non-renewable resources: oil, natural gas, coal and uranium. These resources are being used up at an alarming rate. To meet our demands we are now searching for new sources of energy. One of these new sources of energy is solar energy which will assume increasing importance. It is free but means must be developed to use it economically. Research is actively under way to reduce the storage cost of this low intensity energy and for the design of economical systems. The purpose of this Institute is to provide an international forum for the dissemination of information on solar energy utilization: fundamentals and applications in industry. This meeting is primarily a high level teaching activity. The subject is treated in considerable depth by lecturers eminent in their field. The other participants include scientists, engineers, and senior graduate students who themselves are involved in a similar research and who wish to learn more about current developments, as well as scientists from other areas who are planning to research on solar energy. The lectures are supplemented by informal discussions designed to encourage the free and critical exchange of ideas. A limited number of contributions are also included. This volume contains both basic and applied information contributed during the Institute. The editors appreciate the cooperation of Martinus Nijhoff Publishezsin making the proceedings widely available.
Download or read book New Perspectives for Energy Savings in Agriculture written by V. Goedseels and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its continuing efforts to improve production and storage , European agriculture and food industry consumes ever more energy. Hence, as was the case for all European sectors founded on intensive energy consump tion, agriculture was also severely affected by the shortages and price increases of conventional energy sources over the past decade. The energy consciousness generated in this way led to a widespread con sideration of the application of other, renewable energy sources. The potential applications in agriculture are, however, extremely diverse, and this explains to a great extent the fragmentary nature and even in some cases the mediocre level of current research. The objective of this book is, therefore, to guide the reader in a syste matic way through the apparent chaos of operational data which are currently available on the subject matter: thermal applications within agriculture of solar energy by means of solar collectors, passive designs and storage devices. While in volume I of this series H this area is assessed from a more general economic perspective, this tome II takes a more detailed technical approach. The results of this book were produced in the form of a European concerted action under the leadership of the Commission in Brussels. All possible data were collected by national representatives in the EC member countries. Coordinators were Professor V. Goedseels and Mr E. Van der Stuyft from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Professor G.
Download or read book Analysis and development of regenerated desiccant systems for industrial and agricultural drying written by D V. Merrifield and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results are presented of a research and development effort to further develop and improve the design of a regenerated desiccant drying and dehumidification system which has more than twice the energy efficiency of conventional warm air dryers. The baseline application is for large-scale commercial grain drying, although several other applications have been identified such as space air conditioning and kiln drying of lumber. The system has excellent potential for providing a significant degree of industrial energy conservation while incurring payback periods of two to eight years to recover the added capital investment over conventional less-efficient drying methods. Although the intended energy source for the system is solar energy, the basic energy saving technique is the liquid desiccant drying process itself such that virtually any thermal energy input can be used. The use of solar energy permits further energy conservation if the additional capital investment is justified. The major goal of the present study has been to improve the cost effectiveness of the desiccant regeneration system and establish significant design improvements over the regenerated desiccant drying concept developed in previous study phases. This goal has been achieved through the use of a straightforward evaporative technique for regenerating (reconcentrating) the lithium chloride desiccant solution, in place of using the previous packed column technique, and by using a steam condenser for heat recovery. The use of this technique resulted in a system cost reduction of nearly one-third and an efficiency improvement of approximately 10%, as well as a reduction in system size and complexity.
