Book Drift Exploration in Glaciated Terrain

Download or read book Drift Exploration in Glaciated Terrain written by Geological Society of London and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2001 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the use of till geochemical and indicator mineral methods for mineral exploration in the glaciated terrain of Canada. The principles and examples described in this volume will have direct applications for exploration companies looking for diamonds, precious and base metals and uranium in glaciated parts of North America, northern Europe and Asia and mountainous regions of South America.

Book Sulphur Fertilization of Lodgepole Pine

Download or read book Sulphur Fertilization of Lodgepole Pine written by Paul Thomas Sanborn and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widespread sulphur (S) deficiencies have been detected in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm.) stands in the Sub-Boreal Spruce biogeoclimatic zone of central interior British Columbia. Field experiments in this region have shown that addition of sulphate-S to nitrogen (N) fertilization treatments rapidly increases foliar S concentrations, and usually improves tree growth responses relative to N-only treatments. However, there is an insufficient scientific basis for choosing this S form over more slowly available elemental S-based fertilizers. To address this knowledge gap, this study was begun in 2001 to compare the behaviour of sulphate-S and elemental-S fertilizers in an area-based fertilizer trial, using stable isotope tracer methods to examine the fate and transformations of fertilizer S. Fertilizer treatments were applied to two lodgepole pine stands, near Fraser Lake (Holy Cross site) and in the Bowron River valley (Kenneth Creek site), in fall 2002. This establishment report reviews background literature relevant to this study, details the experimental design and methods used, and documents the initial soil and stand conditions at the time the experimental treatments were installed. ‍?Pre-treatment analyses indicated that mineral soils at these sites have low total S concentrations, which are typical of the British Columbia central interior and are among the lowest reported in the temperate and boreal zones worldwide. Concentrations of other total and (or) available soil macronutrients (N, Ca, Mg, K, P) were usually higher at the Holy Cross site than at the Kenneth Creek site. Lodgepole pine foliar analyses indicated that S deficiency was more pronounced at the former site. Ratios of background S stable isotopes in lodgepole pine foliage and soils differed sufficiently from those of the applied S fertilizers to make a tracer experiment feasible.

Book Stuart Takla Watersheds

Download or read book Stuart Takla Watersheds written by June M. Ryder and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern over the potential impacts of logging on sockeye salmon in the Stuart-Takla watershed of British Columbia has led to initiation of a multi-agency project to study the effects of forest practices on fish production and aquatic environments. As the effects of logging and road construction on sediment input to streams are strongly affected by the erodibility and stability of local surficial materials, a terrain (surficial geology) map is an essential part of the database for such a project. This report reviews the bedrock geology, topography, and evolution of the landscape under glaciation of the Stuart-Takla watershed, and describes the terrain mapping methodology used in the project. It then defines and describes the types of surficial materials found in the watershed, including till and other glacier-derived material, the geomorphological processes affecting the landscape, and sediment sources encountered. The report concludes with consideration and recommendations for forest surface management.

Book Drift Exploration in the Canadian Cordillera

Download or read book Drift Exploration in the Canadian Cordillera written by Peter T. Bobrowsky and published by Province of British Columbia, Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. This book was released on 1995 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the frequency of near-surface mineral discoveries in the British Columbia Cordillera diminishes, exploration is more frequently focused on regions of high potential but mantled by unconsolidated sediments or drift, dominated by Quaternary deposits. This volume is a compilation of papers on various aspects of drift exploration, using examples from British Columbia. Topics of the papers include Quaternary geology, recognition of paleo-flow direction, drift potential mapping, drilling methods, glacial dispersal determination using indicator clasts, till geochemistry, biogeochemical sampling, lake sedimentology, laboratory techniques, shallow seismic methods, borehole analysis, and resistivity mapping. Case studies elaborating on drift exploration concepts are dispersed throughout the compilation.
