Download or read book Mechanics of Residual Soils Second Edition written by Geoffrey E. Blight and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual soils are found in many parts of the world and are used extensively as construction materials for roads, embankments and dams, and to support the foundations of buildings, bridges and load-bearing pavements. The characteristics and engineering properties of residual soils can differ significantly from those of the more familiar transported soils. The fact that residual soils occur often in areas with tropical and sub-tropical climates and (extensively) in semi-arid climates, adds another dimension to their engineering performance, that of unsaturation. Although there are many books that deal with the mechanics of soils, these are based mainly on the characteristics and behaviour of saturated transported soils. The first edition of this book was the first book to be written specifically about the mechanics of residual soils. The book was prepared by a panel of authors drawn from the Technical Committee on Tropical and Residual Soils of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. It was written as a practical professional guide for geotechnical engineers working with residual soils. The second edition has retained the valuable information contained in the first edition. The present editors and authors have extensively revised and augmented the content to bring it completely up to date, adding significantly to the sections on unsaturated soil mechanics and expanding the range and number of instructive case histories. Furthermore, sections on pedocretes, dispersive soils and karst have been added.
Download or read book Australian Sodic Soils written by R. Naidu and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sodic soils cover almost a third of the total land in Australia and are represented to some extent on all continents except Antarctica. They can occur naturally, as in Australia, or may develop as a result of the removal of salts from saline soils." "Sodicity impacts adversely on many soil properties and interferes with the proper functioning of the soil and of the plants grown in it. Problems arise as a result of the deterioration in soil structure, decreased retention and availability of water, decreased nutrient availability and impaired biological activity. Sodic soils are easily eroded and this causes severe land degradation and pollution of water resources." "The management of sodic soils is often difficult and challenging. Because they are so widespread in Australia, their impact on productivity is immense." "Australian Sodic Soils: Distribution, Properties and Management brings together for the first time the results of scientific studies carried out in Australia and presented at the first national conference on Australian sodic soils."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Estuaries of Australia in 2050 and beyond written by Eric Wolanski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the questions: Is Australia’s rapidly growing human population and economy environmentally sustainable for its estuaries and coasts? What is needed to enable sustainable development? To answer these questions, this book reports detailed studies of 20 iconic Australian estuaries and bays by leading Australian estuarine scientists. That knowledge is synthesised in time and space across Australia to suggest what Australian estuaries will look like in 2050 and beyond based on socio-economic decisions that are made now, and changes that are needed to ensure sustainability. The book also has a Prologue by Mr Malcolm Fraser, former Prime Minister of Australia, which bridges environmental science, population policy and sustainability.

Download or read book A Water Story written by Geoff Beeson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater scarcity is a critical challenge, with social, economic, political and environmental consequences. Water crises in Australia have already led to severe restrictions being applied in cities, drought ravaging farmlands, and the near-terminal decline of some rivers and wetlands. A Water Story provides an account of Australian water management practices, set against important historical precedents and the contemporary experience of other countries. It describes the nature and distribution of the country's natural water resources, management of these resources by Indigenous Australians, the development of urban water supply, and support for pastoral activities and agricultural irrigation, with the aid of case studies and anecdotes. This is followed by discussion of the environmental consequences and current challenges of water management, including food supply, energy and climate change, along with options for ensuring sustainable, adequate high-quality water supplies for a growing population. A Water Story is an important resource for water professionals and those with an interest in water and the environment and related issues, as well as students and the wider community.

Download or read book Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils written by Hossein Ghadiri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-09-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants provides a comprehensive discussion of mathematical models used to anticipate and predict the consequences and fate of natural and applied chemicals. The book evaluates the strengths, weaknesses, and possibilities for application of numerous models used throughout the world. It examines the theoretical support and need for experimental calibration for each model. The book also reviews world literature to discuss such topics as the movement of sorbed chemicals by soil erosion, the movement of reactive and nonreactive chemicals in the subsurface and groundwater, and salt transport in the landscape. Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants is an important volume for environmental scientists, agricultural engineers, regulatory personnel, farm managers, consultants, and the chemical industry.
