Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moisture Content and Physical Condition of Soils Another point which this investigation has brought out in a strik ing way is the hysteresis observable in the volume change when a soil is alternately wetted and dried out. This process results in a natural packing of the soil and is seriously detrimental to the mainte nance, of good tilth if the extremes of moisture content reached are wide apart. The causes for and mechanism of this process have been made clear by the experiments here recorded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture: A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of June, 1895 The records showing the conditions in the West are all commented upon directly under the diagrams. AS a rule, during th1s favorable season the fields under ordinary cultivation and those which had been subsoiled and subsequently cultivated do not Show very different mois ture conditions. In some places the-effect of cultivation is not appar ent upon the moisture content of Soils. For reasons which have already been, given it is not to be expected that cultivation would Show a very marked effect upon the amount of. Moisture in the soil either in a very dry season or in a very favorable sea-son with frequent rains. The time when it would have its maximum effect would be after a wet season and when a dry period was coming on. The moisture content at this time should fall much more gradually in the cultivated than in the uncultivated land. This is shown to a slight extent in some of the records, but not to such an extent as would seem likely to occur under the most intelligent Cultivation of the soil. The small amount of data which has been collected is not sufficient, however, to warrant a close and final judgment in this matter. Book Soil Moisture A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of May 1895 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soil Moisture A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of May 1895 Classic Reprint written by U. S. Division Of Agricultural Soils and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture: A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of May, 1895 Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a report upon the amount of water contained in some important types of soil in different portions of the United States. The marked effect of different amounts of rain upon the yield and quantity Of crops is familiar to all in the everyday experience of farmers. It will be seen from these records that, owing to the difference in the texture of soils, even with the same amount of rainfall, soils retain very different amounts of water. As crops require very different conditions of water for their best development, this dif ference in the water content of soils very largely accounts for the peculiar adaptation of certain soils -to certain classes of crops. A good truck soil in a favorable season will contain about 5 per cent, or one twentieth of its weight, of water; and grass land, on the other hand, should contain 20 per cent, or one-fifth of its weight, of water; These are characteristic differences due to the peculiar texture of these lands and their relation to water. The actual amount of water contained in the soil determines the character of the season, the actual amount of rainfall being no reliable measure of this. These records show the actual conditions of moisture available to plants in these soils. It is not possible at present to draw reliable deductions from these records until more data is collected, and they are therefore given for the present with little comment. Book Methods of Soil Moisture Determination Under Field Conditions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Methods of Soil Moisture Determination Under Field Conditions Classic Reprint written by David F. Olson Jr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Soil Moisture Determination Under Field Conditions The determination of soil moisture under field conditions is of vital importance to the agronomist, forester, hydrologist, and engineer. Those dealing in the plant sciences are primarily interested in the amount of water that is available to plants under various environmental conditions; the hydrologist and engineer are also concerned with soil moisture existing in the range above the field capacity and below the permanent wilting percentage. Continuous soil moisture measurement is necessary for full understanding of the nature of soil moisture move ment, but limited studies of soil moisture are often needed as well. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture: A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of July, 1895 It will be seen that the soils differ very markedly in their texture. The truck soils of the Atlantic Coast contain from 1 to 10 per Cent of clay. As a rule, the less clay they contain the earlier the crops mature, which is the most important element in truck farming. A soil con taining between 4 and 5 per cent of clay, as shown in this sample, is an average truck soil adapted to any Of'the usual truck crops. The truck soils, as a rule, consist of from 70 to 85 per cent of the different grades of sand. The finest tvpe of grass land In the Eastern States, on the other hand, contains a very much larger percentage of clay. It contains not more than 5 or 10 per cent of the various grades of sand and from 28 to 50 perc cent of clay. On account of this marked difference in the texture of these soils, they maintain, even with the same rainfall, very different conditions of moisture, and this adapts them to different classes of crops. The trucking interest depends upon the early maturity of vegetables and small fruits, so that they can be put upon the market before there is competition from other soils of the State. It is carried oii under a very intense system of cultivation. The value Of the truck crops of Maryland is about equal to the value of the wheat crop and nearly equal in value to the corn crop, but the truck farming is confined to a narrow belt of land along the coast and Chesapeake Bay, and in the aggregate there is not more than one-tenth of the corn acreage devoted to this interest. This is without considering the market gardening around the larger cities and the production of fruits, which would very materially increase the relative importance of this class of agricultural crops without greatly extending the acreage. These truck soils do not yield as much per acre nor is the quality Of the crops produced as fine as on the heavier soils of the State, but vegetables can be forced to mature early and be placed upon the market during the winter and early spring months sometime before they can be matured upon the heavier soils. Book Soil Moisture Measurement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soil Moisture Measurement Classic Reprint written by Howard W. Lull and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil-Moisture Measurement As has been noted, the gravimetric method is the only commonly used direct means of measuring soil moisture. Simply, it involves taking a soil sample, weighing it, oven-drying it, reweighing, and expressing the original moisture content in percent of oven-dry weight of soil. The first step, securing the sample, is the most troublesome, the degree of difficulty depending on the condition of the soil. Sampling conditions are ideal when soil is just moist enough for easy ingress and egress of the sampling instrument, and where stones, roots, and organic matter are not a problem. Such conditions are seldom encountered. With free water in the soil, moisture can never be sampled accurately: water will drip off as the sample is removed from the ground or compaction may squeeze it out. Rapid sampling is essential to prevent undue losses. Stickiness, often a problem in wet soils, can be alleviated by keeping instruments clean. Where a wet layer overlies a dry one, samples taken from the drier levels may be contaminated. After the upper soil is wetted by a summer rain, for instance, removal of a sample may permit water to run down the hole toward drier soil. The same problem is en countered when samples are taken below a perched water table. Wet instruments add to contamination and should be dried between samplings. When the soil is dry and hard, the principal problem in fine textured soils is to get the sampling instrument in and out again. In coarse-textured soils particularly, samples may slide out of the in strument as it is withdrawn from the soil. Fortunately, after the soil dries in summer, its moisture content may fluctuate so little that frequent sampling may be unnecessary. Download or read book Soil Moisture Constants and Their Variation Classic Reprint written by Walter M. Broadfoot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil-Moisture Constants and Their Variation This paper summarizes the data gathered in the library and the field. The authors believe that it may be a useful reference for other researchers. For students, it may illustrate the fact that soil-moisture constants, far from being fixed, vary considerably with the physical condition of the soil. Some explanation is due of the procedure followed in compiling the information, together with some precautions as to its use. The data are from 901 samples of surface soil and 400 samples of subsoil. Data from published sources were combined with those obtained in studies at the Vicksburg Research Center. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture and Crop Production The correction for this consists in creating a granular, or flocculated, condition Of the soil, so that a number Of small particles act together like a single larger particle. Granulation is important. The most effective size of granule ranges from the size Of corn kernels to that Of timothy seed. Inevitably there will be considerable finer material, SO that the mass will have a loamy structure. By loosening the soil, Opportunity is given for the maximum thickness of films and the largest proportion Of available water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Movement of Soil Moisture It is clearly recognized that the analogy is imperfect in that the capillary potential and resistance to flow are dependent upon the moisture content of the soil, whereas electrical and thermal resistance are practically independent of the amount of current and heat passmg. Nevertheless this point of view and method of attacking the problem promise to become very helpful, and are believed to be a distinct advance In the treatment of a subject which has hitherto suffered on account of serio'us experimental difficulties and the lack of a coherent guiding theory.
