Book excerpt: The aim of the European Community Workshop on Soil Erosion Protection in 1988 was to focus on protection measures against soil loss and offsite effects suitable for the wide range of soil and agricultural conditions in the various European countries. The workshop was attended by 35 specialists from ten member countries of the EEC and from Austria and Yugoslavia who presented 19 papers in a technical session. In addition, field trips were organized to inspect and discuss steep slope stabilization in Allg�uer Alps area, land consolidation with special reference to soil erosion protection, and soil conservation practices under maize and sugar beet in the agricultural area of Lower Bavaria. At the end of the workshop the attendents released recommendations for further activities which are also included in this volume. This volume contains 20 papers presented during the workshop including two paper which report the work demonstrated during one of the field trips. The papers were accepted for publication after being reviewed by at least two independent, anonymous reviewers.

Book excerpt: The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) enables planners to predict the average rate of soil erosion for each feasible alternative combination of crop system and management practices in association with a specified soil type, rainfall pattern, and topography. When these predicted losses are compared with given soil loss tolerances, they provide specific guidelines for effecting erosion control within specified limits. The equation groups the numerous interrelated physical and management parameters that influence erosion rate under six major factors whose site-specific values can be expressed numerically. A half century of erosion research in many States has supplied information from which at least approximate values of the USLE factors can be obtained for specified farm fields or other small erosion prone areas throughout the United States. Tables and charts presented in this handbook make this information readily available for field use. Significant limitations in the available data are identified.

This book, a collection of refereed papers from the First International Congress of the European Society for Soil Conservation, covers the assessment, prediction and modelling of soil degradation, and the strategies used to combat the problem. The current status of soil degradation is reported at both national and local levels, and is related to natural processes such as desertification or to mismanagement of the environment through agricultural or industrial activities. The consequences of soil degradation include loss of soil, fertility and nutrients, declining land productivity and the detrimental effects of sediment and associated contaminants on water quality. There are critiques of the traditional methodologies used in soil erosion research, including the use of erodibility and erosivity indices, rainfall simulation and experimental erosion plots. Other technologies such as geographical information systems and remote sensing are also applied to the study of degradation processes. As well as chapters concerned with existing soil erosion models, a new European Soil Erosion Model (EUROSEM) is described and tested. The diverse nature of conservation measures currently used in Europe is presented, ranging from evaluation of traditional methods such as bench terracing and the use of vegetation, through to novel products such as soil conditioners and geotextiles.
