Download or read book Soil Conservation Practices in Bahir Dar Zuria Wereda Ethiopia written by Rediet Hussien and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil erosion is a major threat to the sustainability of agricultural land and food security. Thus, this book tries to contribute to the adoption of soil conservation that improves agricultural productivity in the underdeveloped world. To study the status of soil conservation practices in the study area, four sample kebeles (sub-districts) were randomly selected. About 121 sample farmers were randomly selected from the selected kebeles as respondents. The respondent farmers were categorized as adopters and non adopters of soil conservation practices. Primary and secondary data were collected. The result showed that educational level, slope of farmland, plot distance, livestock holding, off-farm activities, land tenure security system, training, extension support, perception of farmers about soil erosion as a problem, and their attitude to conservation technologies were found to be significant in influencing farmers adoption of soil conservation practices. The book could be useful to professional researchers, development agents, soil conservation experts in the governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Book The Role of Soil and Water Conservation Practices on Soil Properties Improvement in Ethiopia

Download or read book The Role of Soil and Water Conservation Practices on Soil Properties Improvement in Ethiopia written by Anteneh Asfaw and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: A, , course: Soil and water conservation, language: English, abstract: The review focuses on the importance of soil and water conservation practices on soil properties in Ethiopia. The study conducted in various parts of the country showed that the implemented soil bund reduced annual runoff and soil loss at different rates. Soil and water conservation have improved the soil physicochemical properties on conserved cropland (BD, SMC, infiltration rate, clay content, pH, CEC, av. K, av. P, SOC and TN) than in the adjacent cropland without soil and water conservation measures. Soil and water conservation, reduce the removal of fertile topsoil and improves soil moisture, which favors crop growth as a result grain yield of the crops were increased at various rates based on agro ecology, crop type and local management practices. In general, the effect of constructed soil and water conservation had clearly showed positive impact on soil physicochemical properties and crop yields. Therefore, to reduce soil erosion sustainably, different soil and water conservation options should be introduced and used considering agro ecology, socio-economic profile and climatic condition of the intervention area. Soil erosion is one of the several major deteriorative processes which results in soil degradation and declining agricultural productivity in Ethiopia due to dense population, high livestock density and intensive crop production in the area. Soil and water conservation practice is one the mechanism used to reduce soil and associated nutrient loss; thus, reduce the risk of production. Efforts were started through soil and water conservation strategy at a large scale on farmland since the mid-1970 and 1980’s. However, soil erosion still persists and become major threats of the Ethiopian region.

This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) in the subject Biology - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: The study was conducted in Diyateba kebele and Dijumeti kebeles at Debirework Woreda, East Gojjam zone. The major purpose of the study was to assess the opportunity and challenges of traditional soil conservation practices in Diyateba kebele and Dijumeti kebeles kebele. It also among at investigate the opportunities and challenges of traditional soil conservation practices. The data for this study were collected from both primary and secondary sources by using simple random sampling techniques. The primary data was collected through questionnaires and interviewing farmers who have long history and more experience about the data. The secondary data sources were taken from books and Diyateba kebele and Dijumeti kebele Administrative office. The study should that the farmers of the study area have a good awareness of the negative effects of soil erosion on socio-economic and environmental aspects of the society. To overcome the negative effects, farmers of the study area have practice several traditional soil conservation measures. These practices are both biological (application of manure, crop rotation) and structural measures (soil or stone bund) to protect soil from and maintain soil fertility. To apply those traditional soil conservation practices there are opportunities like distance from homestead, presence of livestock ,area of cultivated land and absence of inorganic fertilizer. And has challenges like socio-economic, farm institutional and technological challenges. To reduce these problems, there should be improved knowledge of local communities 'towards traditional soil conservation practices.

This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: A, Wollega University, course: Soil physical properties, language: English, abstract: Land degradation is a pervasive problem that negatively influences agricultural productivity in Ethiopia as it cause depletion of soil organic matter. Therefore, implementation of soil and water conservation is believed to mitigate the impacts of soil erosion. An on-farm study was conducted in Arjo Gudetu kebele, Eastern Wollega of Oromia with the objective of evaluating soil and water conservation practices on soil physio chemical properties and productivity of crop lands. The study involves one factor: level soil bund (with and without) was a main plot. The treatment (Treatment1=with bund splited in to 12 and Treatment2 = without splited in to 10) with randomized complete block design. Soil sample were collected at 0-50cm and 30-60cm soil depth and analyzed for selected physical and chemical properties. Yield and yield components of the crops were determined using a quadrant sampling technique 1*1m. The data was analyzed using general linear model procedures and to separate difference between mean LSD (5%) was used. On maize (Zea Mays L.) field, level soil bund increased the mean value of soil moisture contents at 0-30 cm and 30-60 cm soil depth, the grain yield increased by 26% and biomass increased by 22%. On sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) field the mean value of soil moisture content, days to flowering, maturity dates significantly affected and biomass was increased by 8.25%.

Book Integrating soil conservation and fodder production as climate adaptation strategy in Ethiopia

Download or read book Integrating soil conservation and fodder production as climate adaptation strategy in Ethiopia written by Guyon, Lolita and published by CTA. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many smallholder farmers in Africa, the farming families of southern Ethiopia are facing three major challenges: the need to intensify and diversify their farm production, on very small areas, in a context of high population growth. In these rural areas, given the fertility rate, the population will double by 2050; agricultural practices must preserve the environment to maintain its productive capacity, for current and future generations; the necessity to rapidly adapt farming practices to cope with climate changes. Regarding these three challenges, Inter Aide has developed an innovative approach that consists in combining fodder production and soil and water conservation. The basic idea is simple: to plant fodder on anti-erosive structures and in unproductive places on the farm.

Book Sustaining the Soil

Download or read book Sustaining the Soil written by Chris Reij and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous soil and water conservation practices are rarely acknowledged in the design of conventional development projects. Instead, the history of soil and water conservation in Africa has been one of imposing external solutions without regard for local practice. There is a remarkably diverse range of locally developed and adapted technologies for the conservation of water and soil, well suited to their particular site and socio-economic conditions. But such measures have been ignored, and sometimes even overturned, by external solutions. Sustaining the Soil documents farmers' practices, exploring the origins and adaptations carried out by farmers over generations, in response to changing circumstances. Through a comparative analysis of conservation measures - from the humid zones of West Africa to the arid lands of the Sudan, from rock terraces in Morocco to the grass strips of Swaziland - the book explores the various factors that influence adoption and adaptation; farmers' perceptions of conservation needs; and the institutional and policy settings most favorable to more effective land husbandry. For the first time on an Africa-wide scale, this book shows that indigenous techniques work, and are being used successfully to conserve and harvest soil and water. These insights combine to suggest new ways forward for governments and agencies attempting to support sustainable land management in Africa, involving a fusion of traditional and modern approaches, which makes the most of both the new and the old.

Book Effect of Soil and Water Conservation Practices Soil Fertility Carbon Sequestration Crop Yield and Crop Income in the Highlands of Ethiopia

Download or read book Effect of Soil and Water Conservation Practices Soil Fertility Carbon Sequestration Crop Yield and Crop Income in the Highlands of Ethiopia written by Tsegay Assefa and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2024 in the subject Nature Protection, Landscape Conservation, grade: A, Mekelle University (Climate change and rural development), course: Climate change, environment and development, language: English, abstract: Land degradation in terms of soil erosion and nutrient depletion affects soil physical, chemical and biological properties; crop yield and income growth particularly crop income. Yet a basic assumption underlying the interventions in developing countries, mostly the degraded agricultural areas, is that adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) practice has the potential to improve available soil nutrients specially carbon content, crop yield and crop income by reducing soil erosion. Less attention, however, has been given to specifying and linking the effect of adopted SWC practices influences (or specifically, improves) soil nutrients and crop yield; their impact on crop income and the factors influencing them in Ethiopia. Partly to fill this limitation, this review aims to look at the effects of adopted SWC practice in cultivated highlands of Ethiopia; the factors influencing them and their implications for soil and crop yield, carbon sequestration and crop income. Several findings indicated that SWC practices affected to soil bulk density (BD) negatively; and soil reaction (PH), potassium (K), available phosphorus (P), total nitrogen (N), soil organic carbon (SOC), soil organic matter (SOM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), texture, exchangeable sodium (N+), calcium (Ca+2), magnesium (Mg+2), other micro nutrients, crop yield and income positively. In addition, the review paper concerns that adoption of soil and water conservation practices has a positive impact for some agricultural soil and crop productivity, while negative impacts for some others, thus, a dynamic soil nutrient analysis should be more appropriate to improve agricultural productivity.

Book Soil Conservation Methods In Goromti Watershed Central Ethiopia

Download or read book Soil Conservation Methods In Goromti Watershed Central Ethiopia written by Addisu Damtew Atnafe and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land degradation is one of the major challenges in agricultural production in many parts of the world, especially in developing nations, such as Ethiopia. A number of soil and water conservation methods were introduced to combat land degradation since 1970s, but adoption of these practices remains below expectations. Factors such as slope of the area, contact with extension workers, tenure status, age, size of house hold and training influenced farmers to adopt soil and water conservation methods. Opportunities related to adopted methods of soil conservation are effective in addressing on farm flooding, increased productivity and reduced soil erosion. Despite the benefits the study also revealed that some challenges which are related to adopted methods they took and reduced plot size, poor design, need more labor and lack of incentives. Thus, the origin of the hurdles ranges from intellectual, financial, biophysical and technical, infrastructural issues. Knowing the respective bottlenecks and problems allows developing strategies to overcome the problems of soil and water conservation seriously and genuinely.

Book Households Willingness to Pay For Soil Conservation Practices

Download or read book Households Willingness to Pay For Soil Conservation Practices written by Gebrelibanos Gebremedhin Gebremariam and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil erosion has been one of the major problems undermining agricultural production in Ethiopia. Consequently, efforts are being made by the government to tackle the adverse effect of soil erosion via Food-for-Work and Cash-for-Work programs. However, the existing literature shows that the achievements of such programs are far from the expectations. Does such an experience mean that there is no hope for soil conservation practices in Ethiopia? Absolutely it is doubtful, the problem could have been rather, the campaigns that have been undertaken in Ethiopia for soil conservation practices have failed to consider local peoples' willingness to pay for such projects from the very initiation of conservation measures. This motivates that, adequate understanding of the socio economic circumstances is required to determine the household's soil conservation demand behavior and the factors that determine their willingness to pay for it. Hence, this book explores the value that the rural households have attached to soil conservation measure using the non marketed valuation technique called Contingent valuation method.
