Download or read book Soil Conservation Districts for Erosion Control Classic Reprint written by United States Soil Conservation Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Conservation Districts for Erosion Control This new appreciation of the partnership that exists between farmer or rancher and society has found expression in the passage of State soil conservation districts laws. Since january 1, 1937, the legislatures of 22 States have passed laws providing for the creation of soil conservation districts. Bills providing for similar laws are being considered for introduction in the legislatures of other States. The Department is vitally interested in the passage of such legislation by the States; In its long experience with con servation programs, whether they dealt with the soil, the forests, the range, or wildlife, the Department has found that the problems of conservation invariably are closely bound up with the right use of land. F armers and ranchers, of whom there are more than 6 million, control the use of most of the arable land in the United States. The Department, cooperating With the States, welcomes an opportunity to work with farmers and ranchers through the cooperating groups which the soil conservation districts laws permit farmers and ranchers to organize. Book excerpt: A number of States have passed soil conservation district laws which enable the farmer and society to cooperate to control accelerated soil erosion. Early in 1936 the Department of Agriculture reached the conclusion that while soil conservation demonstrations could point the way, the States must provide adequate legal means of spreading tested soil conservation practices to all land suffering from erosion, if the problem is to be solved. The purpose of this publication is to discuss how the Department of Agriculture may cooperate with farmers through the mechanism provided by this State legislation.

Book Land Use Regulation in Soil Conservation Districts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Land Use Regulation in Soil Conservation Districts Classic Reprint written by Philip M. O'Brien and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land Use Regulation in Soil Conservation Districts Soil conservation districts have been organized and are operating in all the 48 states. These districts were organized under state laws, passed by the respective state legislatures. Such laws are known in most states as Soil Conservation Districts Laws. In enacting them, the various legislatures set forth their determinations: That farm, forest, and grazing lands are basic assets of the states and communities in which they are located, and that widespread land deterioration has resulted in an alarming loss of those assets. They declared it to be the policy of the states to conserve these resources and they passed the soil conservation districts laws to permit systematic attacks on the problem. The state soil conservation districts laws embody two basic princi ples: (1) That any effective attack on soil erosion and land deteriora tion must start in the communities and on the watersheds where the prob lems originate, and (2) that the local land owners and operators should take the initiative in conservation work and have control of it. These laws permit but do not require the creation of a district in any community. Districts are organized by local farmers and ranchers through the process of petition and referendum. They are local units of government and have their own governing bodies, composed of local peo ple. Members of the governing bodies are usually known as district supervisors; in some states they are called commissioners or directors. The state governments retain some control of district activities in a few states, but most districts are entirely self-governing. Download or read book Erosion Control on Mountain Roads Classic Reprint written by Charles J. Kraebel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Erosion Control on Mountain Roads The rapid increase of motor traffic into the mountainous parts of the country during recent years has compelled the building of many new high-'standard roads and the reconstruction of old roads along modern lines. Much of 'this traffic is pleasure bent, and the new roads are devoted largely to! The opening of recreational areas, par ticularly in the national forests and national parks. That these roads often disfigure the very charms they are intended to reveal is one of the unfortunate results 'of the high standards on which they are built and the rugged topography which they necessarily traverse. Another result, even more serious from the economic viewpoint, is the long train of damages. From erosion beyond the rights of way for which the new roads are almost invariably, though by no means unavoidably, responsible (pls. 1 and 2, A) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Technical Skill for Soil and Water Conservation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Technical Skill for Soil and Water Conservation Classic Reprint written by United States Soil Conservation Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Skill for Soil and Water Conservation Most farmers of the Nation now recognize the importance of soil and water conservation. They are practicing conservation more and more each year. Farmers and landowners have organized more than soil-conservation districts in the United States and its possessions These districts cover more than acres and include more than three-fourths of all the farms and ranches of the country. Around farmers and ranchers in these districts have made detailed conserva tion plans with the aid of trained soil conservation technicians. They are carrying out all types of land use and conservation practices needed on their farms and ranches in cooperation with their soil conservation districts. And there are many other farmers who are using some type of soil and water conservation practice. Furthermore, many farmers who are not practicing conservation might do so if they knew what to do and how to do it. And many of those who are now using some conservation measures might use more if they knew exactly what was needed. Many soil conservation measures, especially annual farm practices, are so simple that farmers need no technical assistance in applying them. Control of weeds, for example, while not always easy, usually is simple in method and generally beneficial in effect. Barnyard manure is so generally beneficial to cr0ps it can be used freely wherever available. Its application is a matter of simple mechanics. Lime also is almost always helpful on land having a ph value of or less; it is applied with simply Operated lime Spreaders. Cover crops provide needed protection to cultivated land dur ing those periods when the regular crops are not growing or are too small to give substantial protection against erosion and leaching. Usually no particular difficulty is involved in their use. But the principal soil-conserva tion measures are complicated in their application and call for thorough technical understanding of their purposes and of how to apply them. They are generally used in combination with one another, and each must fit the land in a pattern of mutual support. Their application always must conform with the principles of hydrology, engineering, and agronomy. Both training and experience are necessary here. N 0 amount of in-door training can take the place of actual experience on the land in this connection. Under varying conditions of topography and drainage, the wrong thing done, or the right thing left undone, on any part of the farm can do serious injury to the entire farm.
