Book Software Reliability Modeling

Download or read book Software Reliability Modeling written by Shigeru Yamada and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software reliability is one of the most important characteristics of software product quality. Its measurement and management technologies during the software product life cycle are essential to produce and maintain quality/reliable software systems. Part 1 of this book introduces several aspects of software reliability modeling and its applications. Hazard rate and nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) models are investigated particularly for quantitative software reliability assessment. Further, imperfect debugging and software availability models are discussed with reference to incorporating practical factors of dynamic software behavior. Three software management problems are presented as application technologies of software reliability models: the optimal software release problem, the statistical testing-progress control, and the optimal testing-effort allocation problem. Part 2 of the book describes several recent developments in software reliability modeling and their applications as quantitative techniques for software quality/reliability measurement and assessment. The discussion includes a quality engineering analysis of human factors affecting software reliability during the design review phase, which is the upper stream of software development, as well as software reliability growth models based on stochastic differential equations and discrete calculus during the testing phase, which is the lower stream. The final part of the book provides an illustration of quality-oriented software management analysis by applying the multivariate analysis method and the existing software reliability growth models to actual process monitoring data.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes the recent advances in software reliability modelling. Almost all the existing models are classified and the most interesting models are described in detail.Because of the application of software in many industrial, military and commercial systems, software reliability has become an important research area. Although there are many models and results appeared in different journals and conference proceedings, there is a lack of systematic publications on this subject. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of this area and provide software reliability researchers and analysts with a systematic study of the existing results. This book can also be used as a reference book for other software engineers and reliability theoreticians interested in this area.

Book Software Reliability Modelling and Identification

Download or read book Software Reliability Modelling and Identification written by Sergio Bittanti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-12-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains five tutorial papers based on the lectures given at the intensive course on Software Reliability Modelling and Identification in Como (Italy) from September 2 to 4, 1987. The purpose of this volume is to present some important models used to forecast the reliability growth during the software testing process, and discuss the practical applicability of models in the management of software techniques for model identification from data (parameter estimation, complexity selection, validation, etc.). The basic reliability concepts are also introduced for those readers who are not familiar with the reliability ideas. Besides the basic models, a new family of models is introduced in the book. This family is flexible enough to describe a variety of different reliability trends. Particular attention is given to the problem of the provision of tools to assist the user in selecting an appropriate model in a particular situation.

Download or read book Reliability Growth written by Panel on Reliability Growth Methods for Defense Systems and published by National Academy Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high percentage of defense systems fail to meet their reliability requirements. This is a serious problem for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), as well as the nation. Those systems are not only less likely to successfully carry out their intended missions, but they also could endanger the lives of the operators. Furthermore, reliability failures discovered after deployment can result in costly and strategic delays and the need for expensive redesign, which often limits the tactical situations in which the system can be used. Finally, systems that fail to meet their reliability requirements are much more likely to need additional scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and to need more spare parts and possibly replacement systems, all of which can substantially increase the life-cycle costs of a system. Beginning in 2008, DOD undertook a concerted effort to raise the priority of reliability through greater use of design for reliability techniques, reliability growth testing, and formal reliability growth modeling, by both the contractors and DOD units. To this end, handbooks, guidances, and formal memoranda were revised or newly issued to reduce the frequency of reliability deficiencies for defense systems in operational testing and the effects of those deficiencies. "Reliability Growth" evaluates these recent changes and, more generally, assesses how current DOD principles and practices could be modified to increase the likelihood that defense systems will satisfy their reliability requirements. This report examines changes to the reliability requirements for proposed systems; defines modern design and testing for reliability; discusses the contractor's role in reliability testing; and summarizes the current state of formal reliability growth modeling. The recommendations of "Reliability Growth" will improve the reliability of defense systems and protect the health of the valuable personnel who operate them.

The next chapter deals with methods for predicting and estimating software reliability, with emphasis on their strengths and weaknesses. The reader is methodically introduced to formal inspection in software development; the effects of product design, program structure, development methods, and the environments of product testing and use on product reliability; and types of software metrics in relation to reliability. The remaining chapters explore the ways in which software engineers have sought to achieve software reliability through testing; problems and standards in software reliability data collection; and applications of time series models to software reliability analysis. This monograph will be of interest to software engineers and designers.

Book Stochastic Models in Reliability Theory

Download or read book Stochastic Models in Reliability Theory written by S. Osaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japan there are many research workers who are especially inter ested in stochastic models in reliability theory. On the above back ground, it was a nice occasion for the Editors to organize the Reliabil ity Symposium with emphasis on "Stochastic Models in Reliability Theory." The Reliability Symposium was held in Nagoya, Japan, April 23-24, 1984. In the Symposium there were 14 contributions of the recent research works on stochastic models in reliability theory in Japan. We briefly sketch all the contributions by the following classifications just for conveni ence. The first three papers discuss coherent structure theory: Miyakawa considers stochastic coherent systems where the system's state can not be completely determined by the states of its components. He shows that such models will be used in identifying the failure mechanism based on failure pattern data. Ohi and Nishida propose multistate systems in which all the state spaces are not necessarily the same, but somewhat strong coherency is assumed. Nakashima and Yamato discuss multivalued output systems and su~gest the type of redundancy effective for improv ing- fail-safe characteristics of such systems. The next two papers are concerned with maintenance and replacement problems: Nakagawa summarizes seven replacement models with discrete variables. He shows that each optimal number is given by a unique solu tion to equation. Kaio and Osaki consider optimum inspection policies for a system whose failure can be detected effectively. They discuss three inspection models and give their optimum inspection policies.
