Due to the fact that software controls more and more aspects of life in modern industrialised societies, software failures inherit risks for businesses, human health or even human life. Software testing is a structured approach to minimise product risks of software systems. When the problem arises that, due to a given budget and timeframe, it is not possible to cover all parts of the software through testing, Risk-Based Testing is a possibility to test the most critical parts of the software first or more intensive. When using this method, both amount of damage and probability of damage must be quantified. Quantifying the amount of damage must happen by considering the different viewpoints of the software system's stakeholders, while quantifying the probability of damage can only happen indirectly, for example through quality indicators like the complexity of the software itself, the quality of the documentation etc. When having derived quantitative values both for the amount of damage and the probability of damage, the priority of the test cases can be determined by using a risk matrix. Furthermore, these values can also be used for metrics. An extension of Risk-Based Testing is Risk and Requirement-Based Testing, where product risks are linked to the requirements against which the software is tested in order to gain an overview if the lists of requirements and risks defined for the software are complete.

Failed or abandoned software development projects cost the U.S. economy alone billions of dollars a year. In Software Development Failures, Kweku Ewusi-Mensah offers an empirically grounded study that suggests why these failures happen and how they can be avoided. Case studies analyzed include the well-known Confirm travel industry reservation program, FoxMeyer's Delta, the IRS's Tax System Modernization, the Denver International Airport's Baggage Handling System, and CODIS. It has been estimated that one-third of software development projects fail or are abandoned outright because of cost overruns, delays, and reduced functionality. Some consider this an acceptable risk—that it is simply the cost of doing business. Ewusi-Mensah argues that understanding the factors involved in development failures will help developers and businesses bring down the rate of software failure and abandoned projects. Ewusi-Mensah explores the reasons software development projects are vulnerable to failure and why issues of management and organization are at the core of any failed project. He examines these projects not from a deterministically technical perspective but as part of a complex technical and social process; he proposes a framework of factors that contribute to the decision to abandon a project and enumerates the risks and uncertainties inherent in each phase of a project's life cycle. Exploring the multiplicity of factors that make software development risky, he presents empirical data that is reinforced by analyses of the reported cases. He emphasizes the role of the user in the development process and considers the effect of organizational politics on a project. Software development today treats often with large-scale projects, immense development costs, and complex sys- tems which typically deploy multiple technologies and require multiple participants for their development. As with any large development exercise, the development of a complex system must be systematic and structured in order to manage this complexity, and in order to make possible the future maintenance and evolution of the system. Thus, while systematic and structured approaches are necessary for the development of such systems, software engineers have attempted to provide the structured methodologies and formalisms so often lacking in large software development projects. However, software development projects are still related with many di®erent high risks. These risks cause software engineering projects to exceed bud- gets, miss deadlines, or deliver less than satisfactory products. As an example, U.S. companies alone spent an estimated $59 billion in cost overruns on IT projects and another $81 billion on cancelled software projects in 1995 (Johnson 1995). One reason for these high costs is that managers are not using adequate measures and executing e±cient risk management assess and mitigate the risks involved in these projects. Although risk taking is essential to progress, and failure is often a key part of learning, the inevitability of risks does not imply the inability to recognize and manage risks to minimize potential negative consequences while retaining the opportunities for creating new and better software. Obviously, this risk management process is particularly di±cult for large-scale soft- ware projects and be handled in the same way as for small project, or just by providing more resources for all development factors.
