Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mitigating Paradox at the eSociety Tipping Point” In the first two decades of the past Century, having as driving factor the automobile and its mass production, the command economy has radically changed our lifestyles, enabling the creation of offices, suburbs, fast food restaurants and unified school d- tricts. With the Internet as driving factor, socio-technical and industrial eNetworked ecosystems are about to change our lives again in these two decades of the twenty-first century, and we are just approaching the tipping point. As we have just reached the point where the tremendous changes fueled by concerted efforts in information communication technologies (ICT) research are unraveling the old society this is creating a lot of d- comfort, confusion and sometimes opposition from the traditional mainstream. This disconnect is being deepened even more by the rocketing speed of technological ICT advances. As technology is getting ahead of society, the old ways, although still do- nant, become more and more dysfunctional and we are experiencing an "age of pa- dox" as the new ways disrupt the way we used to do things and even the way we used to think about the world. Just like the major inventions that shaped the last century were made by 1920, it is expected that the major inventions that will shape the twen- first century are going to be made by 2020.

Book The Paleobiological Revolution

Download or read book The Paleobiological Revolution written by David Sepkoski and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-03-04 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paleobiological Revolution chronicles the incredible ascendance of the once-maligned science of paleontology to the vanguard of a field. With the establishment of the modern synthesis in the 1940s and the pioneering work of George Gaylord Simpson, Ernst Mayr, and Theodosius Dobzhansky, as well as the subsequent efforts of Stephen Jay Gould, David Raup, and James Valentine, paleontology became embedded in biology and emerged as paleobiology, a first-rate discipline central to evolutionary studies. Pairing contributions from some of the leading actors of the transformation with overviews from historians and philosophers of science, the essays here capture the excitement of the seismic changes in the discipline. In so doing, David Sepkoski and Michael Ruse harness the energy of the past to call for further study of the conceptual development of modern paleobiology.

In this way we demonstrate that all phases of evolution and Big History are covered in the articles of the present Yearbook. Several articles also present the forecasts about future development. The main objective of our Yearbook as well as of the previous issues is the creation of a unified interdisciplinary field of research in which the scientists specializing in different disciplines could work within the framework of unified or similar paradigms, using the common terminology and searching for common rules, tendencies and regularities. At the same time for the formation of such an integrated field one should use all available opportunities: theories, laws and methods. In the present volume, a number of such approaches are used. The volume consists of four sections: Universal Evolutionary Principles; Biosocial Evolution, Ecological Aspects, and Consciousness; Projects for the Future; In Memoriam. This Yearbook will be useful both for those who study interdisciplinary macroproblems and for specialists working in focused directions, as well as for those who are interested in evolutionary issues of Cosmology, Biology, History, Anthropology, Economics and other areas of study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been teaching since 1972. Everything and anything that was inspirational. It was always a quest, a search for the higher road, the missing chord. I was blessed to be educated at great NYC schools; my spiritual mentors were some of the most influential teachers of the twentieth century. To this day, I try and leave each person I meet with an inspiration. After a lifetime of reading voraciously, I’m still looking for that ONE exceptional source that explains things, a cookbook of life. You know when you buy a new car, it comes with an owner’s manual. Need information about the new car? It’s in the book. Should be the same with humans. When you are born, you get a book, a BOOK THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING! This would be the one book that I can hand a person and honestly say, “Read this, and you’ll get it.” So, this book was created to be an owner’s manual for humans. It is a spiritual text that will directly answer why you are here and get this...how to fulfill your life’s purpose and destiny. Yeah, big stuff. YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO WALK THE PATH but at least you will have a roadmap and compass.

Book It Revolution

Download or read book It Revolution written by Michael Higgs and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology is so ubiquitous and such an integral part of our lives and our culture that we take it for granted. Indeed, technological advancement is bringing wonderful enhancements to our lives in the form of productivity, ease, comfort, convenience, and fun. But technology is always changing. So where will we be in ten years? Will technology result in a utopian society, or will the picture be much bleaker and darker? Here is the ugly truth: this rapid, exponential growth of IT will soon bring massive, even cataclysmic, social disruption and upheaval. In many fields of employment, IT is taking humans out of the equation and making us obsolete. Entire job classifications and industries will soon disappear. Will yours be one of them? To make matters worse, many “fall back jobs” that people currently rely on to help them get through the tough times caused by layoffs will soon be gone. Think about this impending future development: What will millions of people do when they cannot find a job of any kind, at any amount of pay? Where will they turn? How will they respond? And what will be the effect on society overall? The vast majority of people are unaware of what will soon happen. According to IT Revolution, we, as a society, are like the passengers on the Titanic, coasting along comfortably and complacently, blissfully ignorant of the disaster that looms before us. We are taking a “head in the sand” approach to the future, believing that disasters will happen to “somebody else” or that “the government will take care of me”. But disaster will soon happen to many of us, maybe even all of us, and the government won’t be able to help us. So we must prepare to be able to respond to the future, and we must start preparing now. This is a book that will trouble you. It will antagonize you. It will scare you. But it will also give you hope. As you read IT Revolution, you will discover • How and why the $15 per-hour minimum wage movement will backfire on those demanding that it be implemented • The serious downside of modern-day white collar life • Why technology is rapidly morphing from our Servant to our Master • That technology is not just affecting the white collar world; many blue collar and service jobs are at risk of disappearing • How “Supervisoritis” is harming quality of life for millions of people in the industrialized world and costing western economies billions of dollars annually • How “higher education” is leaving many graduates woefully unprepared for the “real world” • How a major failure of the education system is leading to the removal of millions of people from the workforce and the rapid takeover of industries by IT • A question company leaders need to answer in order to start moving down the road to progress and financial success • What specific steps you can start taking now to shield yourself and your family form the coming disaster Tough times lie ahead for all of us. But it’s not too late for you to take action. It’s not too late to prepare. But we as individuals, family members, leaders of companies, and society as a whole, must act now. Why not let this riveting, fascinating book serve as a practical roadmap?

Book Functional Anatomy of Movement

Download or read book Functional Anatomy of Movement written by James Earls and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and comprehensive approach to functional anatomy through the lens of myofascial continuities, from the coauthor of Fascial Release for Structural Balance Whether we describe them as anatomy trains, myofascial chains, meridians, or slings—insights into the interconnected nature of fascial tissue have had a profound impact on our understanding of anatomy. The concept of tensegrity—the idea that changes in tension may affect the whole body rather than just one part—has likewise opened up new appreciations for the complex and interdependent nature of real-world bodily movements. But musculoskeletal anatomy still tends to be taught in a drastically simplified fashion, through the study of fixed anatomical positions that do little to prepare us for the reality of actual movements. In Functional Myofascial Anatomy, James Earls suggests that we need a new set of tools and vocabulary for watching and describing anatomy in motion. Earls argues that it is seeing movement in action—in different bodies and in different environments—that should inform our understanding of anatomy, rather than the other way around. By situating the different theories and metaphors of myofascial continuities against the context of common real-life movements such as sports exercises and yoga asanas, Earls explains how each theoretical system may be useful in different situations and applicable to different issues. Using up-to-date research, Earls digs into important questions for physical and manual therapists: which tissues really are contiguous? Does continuity of tissue actually show or demonstrate transmission of force and communication along those lines? And does fascial tissue have to be continuous for the body to actually transfer force? Accessibly written and fully illustrated, Functional Myofascial Anatomy offers practical applications for physical therapists, chiropractors, and bodyworkers, as well as new tools for teachers of yoga and pilates to develop a deeper understanding of anatomy and movement.

Book Leading a Surgical Revolution

Download or read book Leading a Surgical Revolution written by Jean-Pierre Jeannet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the 60-year history of the AO Foundation and its impact on the treatment of bone trauma. Originally founded by a group of Swiss surgeons, the AO has since established its osteosynthesis treatment approach to trauma, using surgery and implants, as the global standard. The AO successfully convinced the medical community that surgery of bone trauma was superior to the standard conservative treatment using plaster casts. This new technique meant that patients no longer had to spend long weeks at the hospital in traction, and prevented many disabilities. This book describes the struggle with the medical community, explains how the AO surgeons enlisted the support of an entire industry for their advanced tools and their research and teaching efforts, and details the AO’s evolution into a non-profit foundation that now trains more than 50,000 surgeons, on all continents, every year. The efforts of the AO’s affiliated surgeons, undertaken largely on a volunteer basis and with their own financial resources, serve as a stellar example of social entrepreneurship. Today the AO Foundation numbers over 20,000 surgeon members worldwide, and the industry that emerged to produce related implants and tools employs thousands of skilled staff. Professionals in consulting as well as in healthcare can use this book as a source of successful strategies, and as a blueprint for active social entrepreneurship.

Book excerpt: Accessible to all health care professionals, this text provides a guide to understanding and managing back pain and is one of the premier examples of a biopsychosocial approach to medicine. The content challenges unsubstantiated beliefs regarding the best way to treat and manage back pain and presents an interdisciplinary debate on the subject. In a society where patients are demanding more effective approaches to their problems, this resource offers a radical rethink, a necessary step to achieving a more effective method of treatment. The unorthodox spirit of this material places this book at the center of the revolution taking place in the back pain area. Gordon Waddell is the world authority on the topic of the back pain revolution. The content addresses huge problems of concern to many disciplines and governments. The unbiased, open-minded view looks at the issues and the evidence and invites the readers to consider, debate, and agree on the best course of action. Comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the problem offers both interventionist and conservative approaches to treatment, psychosocial issues, economic factors, patient education, and prevention. A new chapter on Occupational Health Guidelines keeps the reader up-to-date. New information allows the book to expand on the insights of the previous edition, which was considered a classic text. Book Evolution of a Revolution

Download or read book Evolution of a Revolution written by and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of stories about the real secret life of several autism mothers, detailing their stress, their joys, their tears, their laughter, and their disappointments. They describe the struggles they have faced in battling the schools, the state, the media, public opinion, and the medical community that believes autism is a psychological condition rather than a treatable medical disorder. Most importantly, this book reveals the truth behind the causes of autism and offers accounts of real recoveries from a disease that is supposed to be a lifelong disability. These heart-rending and, ultimately, inspirational accounts offer support, practical advice, and spiritual strength to families dealing with autism. They remind the readers that no matter how hopeless their struggle may seem, recovery is within reach.

Book Blueprint for a Revolution Building Upon All of the New Testament Volume One

Download or read book Blueprint for a Revolution Building Upon All of the New Testament Volume One written by Reed K. Merino B.A. M. Div. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if, for more than fifty years, you worked hard to research the New Testament without denominational filters? And then what if you were to organize that research by subject matter? Well, that is what I have done in these two volumes of “Blueprint for a Revolution: Building Upon ALL of The New Testament.” What follows is a catechism of apostolic, true Christianity. It is a body of teaching that flows out of taking all New Testament teachings in a grammatically natural and literal sense, the way we instinctively read all serious literature. Testimony from the earliest Christians is also presented, demonstrating that what those earliest churches taught and lived out was typically identical to what you conclude when you take the New Testament doctrines, commands and promises in that same sense. In those many years of research, I have never come upon a single church or book that provides a specific set of principles (a.k.a., “exegetical method”) by which all Biblical passages are to be interpreted, and that has then set about to consistently surrender to those principles in all the subjects that it covers. My claim, therefore, is that this is the only such catechetical work that does just that. The importance of this book does not lie mainly in the specific conclusions of any individual chapter, and certainly not in any of my literally skills at presenting those conclusions. It lies largely in the juxtaposition of teachings that are often thought to be in conflict with each other only because the traditions that hold to the beliefs in those chapters have been in conflict with each other. It is my contention that what Jesus considered to be “my church” is what is taught within these chapters, the church that is an incarnation of His “kingdom of God”!

  • ISBN : 9780198577843
  • Pages : 434 pages

Download or read book Reef Evolution written by Rachel Wood and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If one does not understand the biology of the coral reef, one does not understand the reef at all. So, using more than 250 illustrations and specially drawn ecological reconstructions of reef communities, Rachel Wood provides a unique evolutionary approach to the understanding of ancient coral reef ecosystems. Marine organisms have aggregated to form reefs for over 3.5 billion years--creating the largest biologically constructed feature on earth, some visible from space. However, their study has been largely descriptive. Reef Evolution, documents the fundamental biological processes and innovations which have molded the evolution of reef ecosystems and given rise to the highly complex communities found today. The appearance of clonality, the acquisition of photosymbiosis, and the radiation of predator groups are all discussed in depth. Data from the fossil record documents the evolutionary development of reef ecosystems. Although reefs only occupy a small percentage of the oceans, their importance to the marine environment is many-faceted and global. They create harbors and allow the development of shallow basins with associated mangrove or seagrass communities; they protect coastlines from erosion; are involved in the regulation of atmospheric carbon, which in turn contributes to climate control. can provide extensive oil and gas reservoirs. From a biological standpoint, however, the great significance of reefs lies in their ability to generate and maintain a substantial proportion of tropical marine biodiversity. This unique interdisciplinary approach provides students and researchers in evolution, marine biology, ecology, paleontology, biodiversity, and geology with a text that will allow them to truly understand the biological innovations which have molded the evolution of coral reefs and given rise to the highly complex communities found today.
