Book Sodium Calcium Exchange A Growing Spectrum of Pathophysiological Implications

Download or read book Sodium Calcium Exchange A Growing Spectrum of Pathophysiological Implications written by Lucio Annunziato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports the text of the lectures of the 6th International Conference on Sodium Calcium Exchange held in Lacco Ameno in the Island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples, Italy, from October 1 to October 5, 2011. The present book uncovers the most striking new findings on NCX that emerged since the previous Conference on Sodium Calcium Exchange, such as the structural dissection of the molecular determinants of Ca2+ sensitivity of the exchanger, the epigenetic regulation of ncx1 gene, the molecular identification of the mitochondrial Sodium Calcium Exchanger, and the discovery of NCX in unexpected anatomical locations such as the female reproductive tract. The book is organized into 11 parts covering NCX structural aspects, genetic and epigenetic regulation, regulatory mechanisms, subcellular localization in mitochondria, involvement in neurodegenerative diseases and in immune regulation, and the role of the cardiovascular and endocrine systems, as well as diabetes in physiology and pathophysiology. Selected chapters of the book are also devoted to the interaction of NCKX and other ion channels and transporters with NCX, like ASICs, TRPM, and NHE.

Book Experimental Neurochemistry

Download or read book Experimental Neurochemistry written by Abel Lajtha and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982-12-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of the Handbook does not parallel any volume of the first edition; it is one more sign, or reflection, of the expansion of the field. By emphasizing the experimental approach, it illustrates the tools that have re cently become available for investigating the nervous system. Also, perhaps even more than other volumes, it illustrates the multidisciplinary nature of the field, requiring multidisciplinary methodology. It is now recognized that the availability of methodology is often the rate-limiting determinant of studies and that improvements or innovations in instrumentation can open up new avenues. A new improved method, although opening up new possibilities and being crucial to making advances, is only a tool whose use will determine its use fulness. If we do not recognize its possibilities, its use will be limited; if we do not recognize its limitations, it will mislead us. It is the possibilities and limitations and the results obtained that are illustrated here.

Book Cellular and Molecular Physiology of Sodium calcium Exchange

Download or read book Cellular and Molecular Physiology of Sodium calcium Exchange written by Jonathan Lytton and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many cellular functions and physiological processes are regulated by changes in cytoplasmic Ca2+, and the plasma membrane Na+/Ca2+ exchanger plays a prominent role in Ca2+ homeostasis in many different cell types. Despite rapid advances in our knowledge of the molecular operation of the exchanger, many intriguing issues remain unresolved, and recent discoveries have revealed certain concepts. This volume brings together contributions from an interdisciplinary group of distinguished scientists and young investigators from around the world who focus upon several emerging themes: the relationship of molecular structure to transport function; the relationship between exchanger isoforms and unique physiological roles; the physiological relevance of molecular regulation; the connection between exchanger localization and physiological function; the role of the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger in disease and as a potential therapeutic target; and the use of transgenic and gene-targeted models to unravel physiological questions.

Book Endogenous Neuroprotection

Download or read book Endogenous Neuroprotection written by Bernhard Schaller and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endogenous neuoprotection is a phenomenon where a brief episode of ischemia renders the brain resistant against a subsequent longer-asting ischemia event. Experimentally, the author was able to model hypoxic preconditioning in animal model. Increasing knowledge of this endogenous neuroprotectin by ischemic tolerance may help to minimize neuronal damage following ischemic stroke and hypoxic encephalopathy. This book is, therefore, the first overview of this important topic and will certainly influence further investigations in clinical and neuroscience research.

Book Sodium Calcium Exchange and the Plasma Membrane Ca2 ATPase in Cell Function

This book was released on 2007-04-23 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ca2+ homeostasis and the plasma membrane Na+/Ca2+ exchanger are vital to many cellular functions and physiological processes. This volume, which is the proceedings of the fifth in a series of international conferences, includes contributions that merge molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and physiology, providing novel insights that significantly advance our understanding of Na+/Ca2+ exchanger in areas ranging from molecular mechanisms to the involvement in human disease. Several important themes are addressed: (1) structure-function relationships of the exchanger; (2) regulation of the exchanger; (3) Na/Ca exchanger gene regulation; (4) cellular location and targeting of the exchanger; (5) NC(K)X and PMCA KO mice; (6) Na/Ca exchanger interactions with other proteins; (7) Na/Ca exchange in cardiac function; (8) Na/Ca exchange in neuronal function; (9) Ca2+-extruding mechanisms and apoptosis; (10) Na/Ca exchange in smooth muscle, kidney, and endocrine function; (11) Na/Ca exchange inhibitors: therapeutic opportunities. Experts in the field of the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA) have also contributed. The rate of progress in this field has been rapidly increasing, and new concepts have emerged regarding the relation between molecular structure and physiological function. New ideas on physiological modes of regulation have been increasingly testable through the use of transgenic animal models. This volume and the conference that preceded it continue the tradition of sharing information to fuel new advances in this exciting and important area of research. Book Excitation Contraction Coupling and Cardiac Contractile Force

Download or read book Excitation Contraction Coupling and Cardiac Contractile Force written by Donald Bers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is the heartbeat generated? What controls the strength of contraction of heart muscle? What are the links between cardiac structure and function? How does our understanding of skeletal and smooth muscle and non-muscle cells influence our thinking about force development in the heart? Are there important species differences in how contraction is regulated in the heart? How do the new molecular data fit together in understanding the heart beat? What goes wrong in ischemia, hypertrophy, and heart failure? This book paints a modern `portrait' of how the heart works and in this picture the author shows a close-up of the structural, biochemical, and physiological links between excitation and contraction. The author takes the reader through a series of important, interrelated topics with great clarity and continuity and also includes many useful illustrations and tables. The book starts by considering the cellular structures involved in excitation-contraction coupling and then described the characteristics of the myofilaments as the end effector of excitation-contraction coupling. A general scheme of calcium regulation is described and the possible sources and sinks of calcium are discussed in simple, but quantitative terms. The cardiac action potential and its many underlying currents are reviewed. Then the characteristics of some key calcium transport systems (calcium channels, sodium/calcium exchange and SR calcium uptake and release) are discussed in detail. This is then built into a more integrated picture of calcium regulation in succeeding chapters by detailed discussions of excitation-calcium coupling mechanisms (in skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle), the interplay between calcium regulatory processes, and finally mechanisms of cardiac inotropy, calcium overload, and dysfunction (e.g., ischemia, hypertrophy, and heart failure). Excitation-Contraction Coupling and Cardiac Contractile Force – Second Edition is an invaluable source of information for anyone who is interested in how the heart beat is controlled and especially suited for students of the cardiovascular system at all levels from medical/graduate students through senior investigators in related fields.

Book Human Toxicology

Download or read book Human Toxicology written by J. Descotes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-09-02 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent volume was designed and edited with two major ideas in mind: firstly, the field of clinical toxicology is changing and an acknowledgement of these changes is warranted; secondly, no comprehensive compilation of recently published case reports of, and clinical studies on, human poisonings is available, which is in sharp contrast to the closely related field of drug-induced side-effects. The book focusses on issues of recent concern, or issues poorly documented in the past. It is important that clinical toxicologists gain a better knowledge of all the available techniques of toxicological analysis. A better understanding of the way a sound interpretation of results should be conducted for the benefit of the patient's management, and a comprehensive set of data on the kinetics of the most common pharmaceutical drugs and many chemicals is required. Human Toxicology is a timely reference work which will be welcomed by a broad audience of toxicology professionals.
