Who have oft seen me pay the appointed dues Of sacrifice in Athens. Need I say more? The meteors of the skies, the springs of earth, . Ye say I look'd into;--and ye say well, For so all Athens hath declared; wherein Is my true crime: not that I am guilty; But some comedian tells the folks of Athens Of Socrates, who boasts to ride the storms, And pour down rain on Athens by his wisdom. And this, forsooth, grows to a full conviction Which now cries on me. 'Tis calumny! Call it some spirit of ill, that haunts my life, And persecutes me here. This is the offspring Of many passing years. Shall I be able To pluck the demon from his throne of power, In the short period, here allotted me? But ye do say, I taught the youth of Athens: --Was't not the thing, the gods ordain'd me to? But, that I did corrupt them!--where's the proof? Where is that pious youth, who, taught by me, Hath e'er forsworn the reverence of the gods? Where he, who modest, lost the sense of shame? Sec note A at the end. r Who, frugal once, is now profuse?--or, temperate, Learnt drunkenness of me? While those, indeed, Th' ambitious and seductive from the paths Of patriot truth, --the artful Critias, And Alcibiades; whose youthful spirit Broke from the truths I taught, to learn the ways, From Pericles, of subtler policies; Bear fruits of violence, not deeds of peace; Such as my followers, Chaerecrates, Chaerephon, and Hermocrates, and Simmias, Cebes, and Phcedo;--of whose peaceful lives, Ne'er have your ears received a charge of crime. But, on this subject I would ask Melitus;--Who is't, improves our youth? MELITUS. The laws. SOCRATES. I ask'd not that. But, whose the subtle thought, Perceived the fitting rules, those laws enact? MELITUS. The judges, Socrates: these noble judges. SOCRATES. These no...

The collection thus contains everything from novels and short stories to belles lettres and more populist works, and includes many exceedingly rare works not available in any other collection from the period. Book Plato and the Poets

Download or read book Plato and the Poets written by Pierre Destrée and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plato’s discussions of poetry and the poets stand at the cradle of Western literary criticism. Plato is, paradoxically, both the philosopher who cites, or alludes to, works of poetry more than any other, and the one who is at the same time the harshest critic of poetry. The nineteen essays presented here aim to offer various avenues to this paradox, and to illuminate the ways poetry and the poets are discussed by Plato throughout his writing career, from the Apology and the Ion to the Laws. As well as throwing new light on old topics, such as mimesis and poetic inspiration, the volume introduces fresh approaches to Plato’s philosophy of poetry and literature.

Book Socrates from Antiquity to the Enlightenment

Download or read book Socrates from Antiquity to the Enlightenment written by Michael Trapp and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socrates, son of Sophroniscus, of Alopece is arguably the most richly and diversely commemorated - and appropriated - of all ancient thinkers. Already in Antiquity, vigorous controversy over his significance and value ensured a wide range of conflicting representations. He then became available to the medieval, renaissance and modern worlds in a provocative variety of roles: as paradigmatic philosopher and representative (for good or ill) of ancient philosophical culture in general; as practitioner of a distinctive philosophical method, and a distinctive philosophical lifestyle; as the ostensible originator of startling doctrines about politics and sex; as martyr (the victim of the most extreme of all miscarriages of justice); as possessor of an extraordinary, and extraordinarily significant physical appearance; and as the archetype of the hen-pecked intellectual. To this day, he continues to be the most readily recognized of ancient philosophers, as much in popular as in academic culture. This volume, along with its companion, Socrates in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, aims to do full justice to the source material (philosophical, literary, artistic, political), and to the range of interpretative issues it raises. It opens with an Introduction surveying ancient accounts of Socrates, and discussing the origins and current state of the 'Socratic question'. This is followed by three sections, covering the Socrates of Antiquity, with perspectives forward to later developments (especially in drama and the visual arts); Socrates from Late Antiquity to medieval times; and Socrates in the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Among topics singled out for special attention are medieval Arabic and Jewish interest in Socrates, and his role in the European Enlightenment as an emblem of moral courage and as the clinching proof of the follies of democracy.

Book Socrates and the Political Community

Download or read book Socrates and the Political Community written by Mary P. Nichols and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1987-07-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a fresh look at Socrates as he appeared to three ancient writers: Aristophanes, who attacked him for his theoretical studies; Plato, who immortalized him in his dialogues; and Aristotle, who criticized his political views. It addresses the questions of the interrelation of politics and philosophy by looking at Aristophanes’ Clouds, Plato’s Republic, and Book II of Aristotle’s Politics—three sides of a debate on the value of Socrates’ philosophic life. Mary Nichols first discusses the relation between Aristophanes and Plato, showing that the city as Socrates’ place of activity in the Republic resembles the philosophic thinktank mocked in Aristophanes’ Clouds. By representing the extremes of the Republic’s city, Plato shows that the dangers attributed by Aristophanes to the city are actually inherent in political life itself. They were to be moderated by Socratic political philosophy rather than Aristophanean comedy. Nichols concludes by showing how Aristotle addressed the question at issue between Plato and Aristophanes when he founded his political science. Judging Plato’s and Aristophanes’ positions as partial, Nichols argues that Aristotle based his political science on the necessity to philosophy of political involvement and the necessity to politics of philosophical thought.
