Le concept de soi est évalué avec le PCSC de Harter (1979). Cette échelle d'autoévaluation fournit des indices sur les compétences cognitives, sociales, sportives et l'estime de soi de l'enfant, ainsi quatre profils d'image de soi: Excellente, Cognitive, Sociale et Négative. Les résultats indiquent une grande sensibilité des filles aux jugements des enseignants, mais une influence indirecte sur les garçons. Ces derniers recherchent davantage une reconnaissance auprès de leurs camarades, en s'ajustant à leurs opinions. L'importance de chacune des trois sources d'influence sociale peut ètre modulée par les caractéristiques propres à l'enfant et au groupe social auquel il appartient.

Néanmoins, il existe une controverse entre les différentes théories sur le représentant social le plus à même d'expliquer le développement du soi de l'enfant. En milieu scolaire, les enseignants, et les camarades filles et garçons, représentent l'ensemble des sources potentielles susceptibles d'influencer la valorisation de soi des enfants. Cette étude examine les effets séparés et conjoints des opinions de ces trois représentants sociaux sur le concept de soi émergeant des enfants. Les perceptions des enseignants et les nominations sociométriques par les camarades indexent les compétences académiques, la sociabilité, les habiletés sportives, les conduites externalisées et internalisées des 684 enfants à l'école primaire. Ces enfants s'évaluent eux-mêmes en utilisant le questionnaire "Perceived Competence Scale for Children" de Harter (1979). Cet instrument mesure les perceptions sur soi au niveau de quatre dimensions du soi: compétences cognitive, sociale, sportive, et estime de soi globale. Un score total fournit un indice unidimensionnel de la confiance en soi, et quatre profils multidimensionnels représentent des images de soi Excellente, Cognitive, Sociale et Négative. Les régressions multiples examinent l'impact du miroir social sur la confiance en soi médiatisée par le représentant social privilégié selon l'âge et le sexe de l'enfant. Les analyses discriminantes nous informent sur les contributions du miroir social à l'élaboration de l'image de soi. Les résultats indiquent une plus grande sensibilité des filles aux jugements des enseignants, et un ajustement des garçons aux opinions des camarades dans l'élaboration d'une image de soi. Finalement, l'importance de chacune des trois sources d'influence sociale peut être modulée par les caractéristiques propres à l'enfant et au groupe social auquel il appartient.

Book excerpt: In the late 1950s, like tens of thousands of young men of his generation, Pierre Bourdieu, having recently passed the agrégation in philosophy, found himself immersed in the Algerian war. Motivated by an impulse that, as he himself says, ‘was civic rather than political’, nothing seemed more important to him than to understand the Algerian situation and provide the elements that would enable others to come to an informed judgement about it. In extremely tough conditions and along with a small group of students, Bourdieu undertook a series of studies across an Algeria that was tightly patrolled by the army, leading him to discover the shocking reality of the resettlement camps and to analyse the mechanisms of destruction of Algerian society of which they were emblematic. To achieve the objectives he had set himself, Bourdieu had to carry out a genuine intellectual conversion, acquiring an ethnographic understanding of Algerian society, learning sociological analysis at a breakneck pace and inventing new instruments - both theoretical and empirical - that would enable him to understand the relations of domination specific to colonialism. These new tools also enabled him to analyse the nature of the crisis that the war had both produced and manifested. This unique volume brings together the first texts written by Bourdieu in the midst of the Algerian conflict, as well as later writings and interviews in which he returns to the topic of Algeria and the decisive role it played in the development of his work.

Book excerpt: Much orthodox economic theory is based on assumptions which are treated as self-evident: supply and demand are regarded as independent entities, the individual is assumed to be a rational agent who knows his interests and how to make decisions corresponding to them, and so on. But one has only to examine an economic transaction closely, as Pierre Bourdieu does here for the buying and selling of houses, to see that these abstract assumptions cannot explain what happens in reality. As Bourdieu shows, the market is constructed by the state, which can decide, for example, whether to promote private housing or collective provision. And the individuals involved in the transaction are immersed in symbolic constructions which constitute, in a strong sense, the value of houses, neighbourhoods and towns. The abstract and illusory nature of the assumptions of orthodox economic theory has been criticised by some economists, but Bourdieu argues that we must go further. Supply, demand, the market and even the buyer and seller are products of a process of social construction, and so-called ‘economic' processes can be adequately described only by calling on sociological methods. Instead of seeing the two disciplines in antagonistic terms, it is time to recognize that sociology and economics are in fact part of a single discipline, the object of which is the analysis of social facts, of which economic transactions are in the end merely one aspect. This brilliant study by the most original sociologist of post-war France will be essential reading for students and scholars of sociology, economics, anthropology and related disciplines.

The diskette, the email, the fax, the net, and all the other forms of communication that are now around are powerful assets, but they do not in any way reduce the flow of paper or the complexity of coordinating activities involved in producing an artifact such as a book. Instead, the reverse seems to be true. Obviously, the use of such tools requires considerable skill at the center of coordination, to borrow an expression from a chapter in this volume. As editors, we have been fortunate to have Ms. Lotta Strand, Linkoping University, at the center of the distributed activity that producing this volume has required over the last few years. With her considerable skill and patience, Ms. Strand and her work provide a powerful illustration of the main thrust of most of the chapters in this volume: Practice is a coordination of thinking and action, and many things had to be kept in mind during the production of this volume.

Book excerpt: Mothering While Black examines the complex lives of the African American middle class—in particular, black mothers and the strategies they use to raise their children to maintain class status while simultaneously defining and protecting their children’s “authentically black” identities. Sociologist Dawn Marie Dow shows how the frameworks typically used to research middle-class families focus on white mothers’ experiences, inadequately capturing the experiences of African American middle- and upper-middle-class mothers. These limitations become apparent when Dow considers how these mothers apply different parenting strategies for black boys and for black girls, and how they navigate different expectations about breadwinning and childrearing from the African American community. At the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, work, family, and culture, Mothering While Black sheds light on the exclusion of African American middle-class mothers from the dominant cultural experience of middle-class motherhood. In doing so, it reveals the painful truth of the decisions that black mothers must make to ensure the safety, well-being, and future prospects of their children.
