Book Enhancing Socioeconomic Monitoring to Support Conservation of Coral Reef and Near Shore Resources in Thailand

Download or read book Enhancing Socioeconomic Monitoring to Support Conservation of Coral Reef and Near Shore Resources in Thailand written by Narumon Arunotai and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In order to improve the effectiveness of current marine conservation efforts and coral reef management, it is necessary for coastal managers and related stakeholders to understand the cultural, economic, and social dimensions of people's relationships with coral reef resources. Useful socioeconomic information is needed to improve and comprehensively enhance coral reef management and conservation. Through socioeconomic monitoring, management will identify the degree of importance that coral and related marine resources have for the livelihood of local communities, the purposes and rates of use of different resources, and the potential social, cultural and economic impacts to the local communities if the resources are degraded or damaged. In Thailand, while it is recognized that socioeconomic information is useful for adaptive management and sustainable use of resources, the lack of local capacity for conducting socioeconomic monitoring in a systematic way, like that afforded by SocMon, was identified as a major problem for which this project attempted to address"--Page 1.

Book Communicating Climate Change Information for Decision Making

Download or read book Communicating Climate Change Information for Decision Making written by Silvia Serrao-Neumann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides important insight on a range of issues focused on three themes; what new climate change information is being developed, how that knowledge is communicated and how it can be usefully applied across international, regional and local scales. There is increasing international investment and interest to develop and communicate updated climate change information to promote effective action. As change accelerates and planetary boundaries are crossed this information becomes particularly relevant to guide decisions and support both proactive adaptation and mitigation strategies. Developing new information addresses innovations in producing interdisciplinary climate change knowledge and overcoming issues of data quality, access and availability. This book examines effective information systems to guide decision-making for immediate and future action. Cases studies in developed and developing countries illustrate how climate change information promotes immediate and future actions across a range of sectors.

Download or read book Coral Reef Conservation written by Isabelle M. Côté and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral reefs are the 'rain forests' of the ocean, containing the highest diversity of marine organisms and facing the greatest threats from humans. As shallow-water coastal habitats, they support a wide range of economically and culturally important activities, from fishing to tourism. Their accessibility makes reefs vulnerable to local threats that include over-fishing, pollution and physical damage. Reefs also face global problems, such as climate change, which may be responsible for recent widespread coral mortality and increased frequency of hurricane damage. This book, first published in 2006, summarises the state of knowledge about the status of reefs, the problems they face, and potential solutions. The topics considered range from concerns about extinction of coral reef species to economic and social issues affecting the well-being of people who depend on reefs. The result is a multi-disciplinary perspective on problems and solutions to the coral reef crisis.
