This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of a contract awarded by the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Environmental Pro tection Agency, a workshop on the methodology of economic impact analy sis was held at Hueston Woods State Park Lodge in Oxford, Ohio, April 13-15, 1977. Also attending the workshops were individuals from various governmental agencies that use regional models and economic impact statements. Preliminary versions of the papers appearing in this vol ume served as focal points for discussions that have hopefully continued, stimulating further thinking of the problems addressed. The objectives of the conference were not only to explore recent develop ments in methodology but also to expose users of economic impact analyses to a wide variety of models and applications and to acquaint academicians with the needs of users. The papers appearing in this volume represent only a portion of the output of this workshop.

Book An Evaluation of the Utility of Large scale Economic Models for Socio economic Impact Assessment

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Utility of Large scale Economic Models for Socio economic Impact Assessment written by Tom Pinfold and published by Gardner Pinfold Consulting Economists Limited. This book was released on 1987 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large scale investment projects, such as the energy developments proposed for Atlantic Canada, the Arctic and Western Canada in the early 1980's, stimulated keen interest in the estimation of their social and economic impacts. The use of large-scale economic models was seen as a possible method of assessing these impacts. This report examines the utility of large-scale economic models for examining the socio-economic impact of private and public sector projects within a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) framework. It begins by examining the nature of the SIA in Canada to identify the types of questions and the variables that are normally of interest, and for which large-scale models should be able to assist in developing answers. A set of study models, chosen for their apparent usefulness for SIA work and public availability, are described in summary fashion to outline their main conceptual features. Each of the study models is examined in terms of a set of technical characteristics to provide an overview of its capability to deal with SIA questions and issues. The strengths and limitations of multipliers and some issues of interpretation for SIA work are discussed. The features of the different classes of models, and the properties of specific models, especially suited to analyze and assess typical SIA economic impact concerns are identified.

Book The Economics of Big Science

Download or read book The Economics of Big Science written by Hans Peter Beck and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this open access volume identify the key ingredients for success in capitalizing on public investments in scientific projects and the development of large-scale research infrastructures. Investment in science – whether in education and training or through public funding for developing new research tools and technologies – is a crucial priority. Authors from big research laboratories/organizations, funding agencies and academia discuss how investing in science can produce societal benefits as well as identifying future challenges for scientists and policy makers. The volume cites different ways to assess the socio-economic impact of Research Infrastructures and their role as hubs of global collaboration, creativity and innovation. It highlights the different benefits stemming from fundamental research at the local, national and global level, while also inviting us to rethink the notion of “benefit” in the 21st century. Public investment is required to maintain the pace of technological and scientific advancements over the next decades. Far from advocating a radical transformation and massive expansion in funding, the authors suggest ways for maintaining a strong foundation of science and research to ensure that we continue to benefit from the outputs. The volume draws inspiration from the first “Economics of Big Science” workshop, held in Brussels in 2019 with the aim of creating a new space for dialogue and interaction between representatives of Big Science organizations, policy makers and academia. It aspires to provide useful reading for policy makers, scientists and students of science, who are increasingly called upon to explain the value of fundamental research and adopt the language and logic of economics when engaging in policy discussions.
