Book excerpt: This paper examines the association of personal and family income and wealth on completed fertility and number of child bearing unions for men and women using newly released data from 2014 wave of the Survey of Income and Program Participation by the U.S. Census that contain the first national measures of complete male and female fertility as well as measures of multi-partner fertility. Results show that personal income and net worth are positively associated with total fertility and number of child bearing unions for men and negatively associated with total fertility and number of child bearing unions for women. Family income is negatively associated with fertility and number of child bearing unions for men and positively associated with total fertility for women. These results suggest that the source of income and wealth (either from the individual him or herself or from the individual's family) influences the fertility of men and women very differently and conform to evolutionary predictions concerning the role of male and female status in fertility behavior.

Data used in the aggregate level analysis come from multiple sources, including the 2001 United Nations Demographic Yearbook, the 1964 to 2004 Taiwan-Fukien Demographic Yearbooks, and National Statistics Reports by the Statistics Bureau of Republic of China. To explore male fertility determinants, the book analyzes individual data from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) in the United States. The findings presented here demonstrate that male fertility differs from female fertility in both rates and determinants, which suggests that female fertility cannot fully represent human fertility.

Much of the previous work in this area has been conducted by the authors (Raymo and Iwasawa), and the longer format of this book allows us to reexamine a wide range of family outcomes using newer data and to provide a thorough and systematic evaluation. The text uses multiple sources of data that cover a period of rapid family change (1970s through 2010s) to describe trends in educational differences in a wide range of family behaviors linked to the well-being of both parents and children. Descriptive analyses provide an overview of period and cohort trends in educational differences in age at first marriage, assortative mating, cohabitation, bridal pregnancy, divorce, remarriage, age at first birth, unintended childbearing, single motherhood, maternal employment, and family-related attitudes. Multivariate analyses provide insights into the processes underlying observed educational differences in family behavior. Patterns of educational differences in family behavior in Japan are evaluated with reference to findings from related research in the United States and other low-fertility Western societies. div
