Book Science for Canada s Atlantic Inshore Seas Fisheries

Download or read book Science for Canada s Atlantic Inshore Seas Fisheries written by F. D. McCracken and published by Fisheries Research Board of Canada. This book was released on 1976 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a sequel to "Science for Canada's Shelf Seas Fisheries" by Regier and McCracken (1975). Inshore seas fisheries cannot be defined rigorously and only acquire meaning on the Atlantic coast where there are many weakly organized fishermen based in about 2000 communities. This paper attempts to identify the science effort necessary to help resolve the problem of making decisions about many small fisheries-based communities. Particular attention is paid to the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Book Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management

Download or read book Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management written by Sarah L. Fowler and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.

Book Impacts of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture

Book Navigating Troubled Waters

Download or read book Navigating Troubled Waters written by Canada. Task Force on Atlantic Fisheries and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following objectives, stated below in order of priority, should guide Atlantic fisheries policy: 1)The Atlantic fishing industry should be economically viable on an ongoing basis, where to be viable implies an ability to survive downturns with only a normal business failure rate and without government assistance. 2)Employment in the Atlantic fishing industry should be maximized subject to the constraints that those employed receive a reasonable income as a result of fishery-related activities, including fishery-related income transfer payments. 3)Fish within the 200-mile Canadian zone should be harvested and processed by Canadians in firms owned by Canadians wherever this is consistant with Objectives 1 and 2 and with Canada's international treaty obligations.
