Book Still Waters The Secret World of Lakes

Download or read book Still Waters The Secret World of Lakes written by Curt Stager and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating exploration of lakes around the world, from Walden Pond to the Dead Sea. More than a century and a half have passed since Walden was first published, and the world is now a very different place. Lakes are changing rapidly, not because we are separate from nature but because we are so much a part of it. While many of our effects on the natural world today are new, from climate change to nuclear fallout, our connections to it are ancient, as core samples from lake beds reveal. In Still Waters, Curt Stager introduces us to the secret worlds hidden beneath the surfaces of our most remarkable lakes, leading us on a journey from the pristine waters of the Adirondack Mountains to the wilds of Siberia, from Thoreau’s cherished pond to the Sea of Galilee. Through decades of firsthand investigations, Stager examines the significance of our impacts on some of the world’s most iconic inland waters. Along the way he discovers the stories these lakes contain about us, including our loftiest philosophical ambitions and our deepest myths. For him, lakes are not only mirrors reflecting our place in the natural world but also windows into our history, culture, and the primal connections we share with all life. Beautifully observed and eloquently written, Stager’s narrative is filled with strange and enchanting details about these submerged worlds—diving insects chirping underwater like crickets, African crater lakes that explode, and the growing threats to some of our most precious bodies of water. Modern science has demonstrated that humanity is an integral part of nature on this planet, so intertwined with it that we have also become an increasingly powerful force of nature in our own right. Still Waters reminds us how beautiful, complex, and vulnerable our lakes are, and how, more than ever, it is essential to protect them.

Book Structural Adjustment and Socio economic Change in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Structural Adjustment and Socio economic Change in Sub Saharan Africa written by Peter Gibbon and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1996 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarises the results of work at the Nordiska Afrikainstitutet/Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) on the impact of structural adjustment implementation on the economies, states and societies of sub-Saharan Africa. It consists of two essays and an appendix listing research projects which have been/are being carried out under the auspices of NAI. The first essay raises a series of conceptual and methodological questions in the context of a presentation of some of the main empirical results obtained from extended field work carried out during the course of 1992 and 1993 in Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The second essay presents the three main themes - private trading networks and structures, the changing political economy of land, and popular forms of social provisioning - that constitute the core of the second phase of NAI's structural adjustment research and, in so doing, provides a review of aspects of the adjustment literature. This report is, therefore, an attempt both at stock-taking and agenda-building as part of a wider quest for deepening our understanding of the structures and processes of socio-economic change associated with the crisis and adjustment years in contemporary Africa

Download or read book The Earth Remains Forever written by Rob Jackson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing especially for people who've tuned out the environmental debate, Rob Jackson persuasively argues that we're at a crucial turning point in environmental history, where choices we make now will determine the quality of life into the unforeseeable future. Laying out the scientific facts in plain language and with flashes of humor, he shows how the escalation of population growth and resource consumption in the twentieth century caused problems from ozone depletion to global warming, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss. At the same time, however, he highlights ongoing solutions to these problems and ways in which we can create a sustainable future for subsequent generations and all life on earth. His urgent message is not that we've already failed, but that we can succeed.

Book Limnology Climatology and Paleoclimatology of the East African Lakes

Download or read book Limnology Climatology and Paleoclimatology of the East African Lakes written by Thomas C Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large lakes of the East African Rift Valley are among the oldest on Earth, and are vital resources for the people of their basins. They are unique among the large lakes of the world in terms of their sensitivity to climatic change, rich and diverse populations of endemic species, circulation dynamics and water-column chemistry, and long, continuous records of past climatic change. A comprehensive study of the large African lakes is long overdue. The scientific justification for such an effort is noted in the previous paragraph and is illustrated in great detail in this volume. Societal need for the sustainable utilization of these lakes offers an even more compelling reason for examination of biological food webs, water quality, and past climate variability in East Africa. The lakes provide the most important source of protein for the people of the African Rift Valley, and fish populations are shifting dramatically in response to fishing pressure, introduction of exotic species, land use impact on water quality, and perhaps climatic change. Current estimates of primary productivity, the underpinning of the food resource, are extremely crude and based on only a few spot measurements.

Book Marketing and Consumption of Fish in Eastern and Southern Africa

Download or read book Marketing and Consumption of Fish in Eastern and Southern Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven country case studies of fish marketing and distribution patterns are presented in this collection. Country studies of Burundi, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe were prepared in accordance with a recommendation of the Technical Consultation on Aquaculture and Human Nutrition (Maseru, Lesotho, 5-8 June 1989). The selected countries represent a considerable range of circumstances in terms of such dimensions as territorial extent, access to marine or freshwater resources, domestic production capcities, and traditions of fisheries and fish consumption. An introductory overview chapter provides a summary account based on the format used for each of the case presentations, and sets out general recommendations for further development action on a region-wide basis.
