By providing easy access to material often scattered in books, monographs, and periodicals addressed to different audiences, this volume performs a major service for students and scholars involved in cross-cultural or Chinese studies. The volume begins with an introductory chapter that presents quantitative data on publication trends and offers a qualitative evaluation of the literature. The studies that follow are divided into 13 chapters largely based on the American Psychological Association content classifications. Within chapters citations are arranged alphabetically by author. Items from non-English sources have been translated into English, while many English abstracts of Chinese publications were extensively edited or rewritten. In addition, an introduction and introductory notes to each chapter place the citations in context. As author index and an extensive subject index provide cross-referencing and aid in literature searches. An invaluable acquisition for any library with a Chinese studies or psychology collection, this volume will both introduce readers to the Chinese psychological literature and facilitate their access to this important body of work.

Book Women Leisure and the Family in Contemporary Society

Download or read book Women Leisure and the Family in Contemporary Society written by Nicole Samuel and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to highlight new trends in research on women's leisure. Comparisons drawn between countries at different stages of socioeconomic development demonstrate fascinating similarities and also many differences. Women's leisure is still constrained by traditional ideologies and gender relations, but there is evidence that leisure may also provide the opportunity for liberating effects such as empowerment and autonomy. Leisure may thus act as an agent of positive social change. This book has been developed from a multinational study involving fifteen diverse countries and set up within the framework of the Research Commission of the World Leisure and Recreation Association. A wide range of sociocultural experiences are reported in chapters on Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Morocco, Spain, the U.S.A. and U.K. Containing many original insights, the book is aimed at advanced students and research workers in leisure studies, women's studies, sociology and related disciplines.

Book Race Ethnicity and Leisure

Download or read book Race Ethnicity and Leisure written by Monika Stodolska and published by Human Kinetics. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race and ethnicity have a significant impact on leisure behavior and activity choices. Yet, until now, no book has thoroughly explored that impact, though this topic is critical for leisure professionals to understand as they shape services and programs to meet the needs of the diverse populations they serve. Race, Ethnicity, and Leisure: Perspectives on Research, Theory, and Practice brings together 28 world-renowned researchers who provide a comprehensive review and unified perspective on leisure in relation to five minority populations in the United States and Canada: African Americans, Latino Americans, Asian North Americans, Indigenous peoples, and religious minority groups. This text offers a compendium of knowledge as it • synthesizes leisure research on race and ethnicity and discusses how changing demographics will affect leisure behaviors and activities in the 21st century; • explains the leisure behaviors and participation patterns of racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States and Canada; • explores issues, including natural resource recreation, physical activity and health, tourism, and sport, as they relate to recreation activities among minorities; and • presents an international perspective, delving into the leisure behaviors of minority groups in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and East Asia. Race, Ethnicity, and Leisure examines the current theories and practices related to minority leisure and reviews numerous issues related to these diverse groups’ leisure, including needs and motivations, constraints, and discrimination. The authors consider leisure behavior of ethnic and racial groups , investigating issues such as types of recreation participation among specific groups, recreation in specific environments, and factors affecting participation. The book also suggests future directions in research and professional practice, guiding students and professionals in addressing the demographic changes in the U.S. and Canadian populations. The result is an unprecedented text that offers an extensive look at the changing landscape of recreation, leisure pursuits, our world, and the populations that are driving these changes. As such, Race, Ethnicity, and Leisure is an essential text for those preparing to enter the recreation and leisure field.

Book Individual Differences in Addictive Behaviors

Download or read book Individual Differences in Addictive Behaviors written by Lucy J. Troup and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of addiction draws primarily on methods and approaches to understanding, treating and supporting addiction drawn from traditional approaches. The foundations of which focus on responses seen across groups, but often neglecting to account for the role the individual differences plays in understanding and treating addiction. It is clear from the literature that there is often a lack of consensus in both understanding and treating those struggling with addiction. Individual differences therefore, whilst not always conforming to the accepted model for developing theoretical interpretations and practice in the field, are key to successful outcomes in treating addiction.
