Book excerpt: Excerpt from Society in America, Vol. 2 of 3 While we were at Detroit, we were most strongly urged to return thither by the Lakes, instead of by either of the Michigan roads. From place to place, in my previous travelling, I had been told of the charms of the Lakes, and especially of the Island of Mackinaw. Every officer's lady who has been in garrison there, is eloquent upon the delights of Mackinaw. As our whole party, however, could not spare time to make so wide a circuit, we had not intended to indulge ourselves with a further variation in our travels than to take the upper road back to Detroit; having left it by the lower. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1: Part 3 IN the previous chapters, much has been recorded that sullies the historic pages of Puritan New England. We have seen that its religious zealots, under cover of high spirituality, had con summated their persecutions in the murder of three individuals of unspotted lives and conversation, and of whom it may be justly said, The world was not worthy. Injustice and cruelty in any form afford a humiliating exhibition of the depravity of man but when presented to us under the mask of superior sanc tity, the mind is wont to turn with feelings of deepened abhorrence from such a desecration of the name of religion. In every reli gious profession, conscientious feelings should be respected, but the persecutions in Massachusetts violated even the plainest laws of humanity. The rulers of this province, in justification of their wicked acts, represented Friends as moving under extreme delu sion but what greater or more shocking delusion can there be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliographical Society of America, Vol. 3: Proceeding and Papers; 1908 Looked on as a sport manuscript hunting is thus prince among book sports. But, while it is indeed a sport, it is more than a sport; it is on the one hand a useful art to be compared with fur hunting or hunting for food, and on the other hand it bears the same relation to science that the hunting for rare orchids or rare birds and beasts does to natural science. As a sport manuscript hunting belongs chiefly to the amateur, as a useful art chiefly to the bookseller and as a handmaid to science chiefly to the scholar, but the librarian knows something of the pleasures of each; the joy of bag ging a specimen perfect as to vellum, handwriting and orna ment, the keen delight in drawing a prize in the lottery of the market and the exquisite satisfaction of finding that a given ms. I am in danger of not fully apprehending the principles on which society in the United States is founded; and of erring in the application to these of the facts which came under my notlce. In the last respect, I am utterly hope less of my own accuracy. It is in the highest de gree improbable that my scanty gleanings in the wide field of American society should present a precisely fair sample of the whole. I can only explain that I have spared no pains to discover the truth, in both divisions of my task; and invite cor rection, in all errors of fact. This I earnestly do; holding myself, of course, an equal judge with others on matters of Opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The British scholar Harriet Martineau spent two years travelling throughout the United States before writing her three-volume commentary, Society in America, in 1837. Her lengthy journey began in New York in the autumn of 1834, less than sixty years after the birth of the United States, and she immersed herself in the politics, economics, civilisation and religions of the country before returning to England in the summer of 1836. Her travels took her to the nation's capital, where she enjoyed the hospitality of the president, witnessed Supreme Court proceedings and visited both houses of Congress. She also went to prisons, hospitals and mental institutions, literary and scientific foundations, factories, plantations and farms around the land; lived in farmhouses and log cabins; and travelled by horse, stagecoach and steamboat. This third volume examines American social organisation and religious institutions, with chapters on women, children, marriage, and religious beliefs and practices.
