Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late 19th century and early 20th century, there was a relatively strong Socialist movement in the United States. In various states and municipalities there were Socialist Parties. The movement believed in the public ownership and democratic management of the basic means of production and distribution. It also had strong ties, especially in Wisconsin, with the organizedlabor movement of the time. The movement was not a "Communist" movement, that is, one that believed in the dictatorship of the working class; nor was it a "National Socialist"movement, that is, one that believed in a military dictatorship. Rather, it was what is now called a "Democratic Socialist" movement, a movement that sought change through the ballot box by educating the voter. The movement wasstrongly anti-war, especially during World War I. Socialists also believed that workers should unite to improve their status. The Sheboygan movement was therefore strongly oriented toward anti-war sentiments and for labor improvement.Using primary source documents the Kneevers present a great historic picture of the Sheboygan Socialists.

Book The American Socialist Movement 1897 1912

Download or read book The American Socialist Movement 1897 1912 written by Ira Kipnis and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 869 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1952, this work has taken its place as the standard history of the Socialist Party to 1912. The American Socialist Party, at the height of its power, had more than a hundred and fifty thousand members, published hundreds of newspapers, won almost a million votes for its presidential candidate, elected more than one thousand of its members to political office, secured passage of a considerable body of legislation, won the support of one-third of the American Federation of Labor, and was instrumental in organizing the Industrial Workers of the World. It counted in its ranks some of the most talented organizers, able thinkers, and colorful personalities of their generation, conducted an immense propaganda effort, and, for a time, multiplied its support and influence at an astounding pace. The rise and decline of the Socialist Party constitutes a most important and instructive chapter in American history. Few books have more to offer to the student of the movement than this one.

Book Building the Commune

Download or read book Building the Commune written by Geo Maher and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America’s experiments in direct democracy Since 2011, a wave of popular uprisings has swept the globe, taking shape in the Occupy movement, the Arab Spring, 15M in Spain, and the anti-austerity protests in Greece. The demands have been varied, but have expressed a consistent commitment to the ideals of radical democracy. Similar experiments began appearing across Latin America twenty-five years ago, just as the left fell into decline in Europe. In Venezuela, poor barrio residents arose in a mass rebellion against neoliberalism, ushering in a government that institutionalized the communes already forming organically. In Building the Commune, George Ciccariello-Maher travels through these radical experiments, speaking to a broad range of community members, workers, students and government officials. Assessing the projects’ successes and failures, Building the Commune provides lessons and inspiration for the radical movements of today.
