The very capacious auditorium of Tremont Temple was destroyed by fire in August, 1879; and in November, 1879, the lectures were transferred to the Old South Meeting House, the most interest ing of the historic edifices of New England. Fiat-money, greenback issues, I should remind my family, made currency plenty, and prices went up, and business was lively; but our wages did not go up as fast as the prices. Will it help us much to go through that experience again? We want fiat - money once more; we want a greenback currency; we want to raise prices! But, if the prices go up faster than our wages, how are we to be helped by the change? How are we to avoid loss by it, and hardship? It is the notorious history of all inflation, that wages are the last things to rise, and when they do start upward they never reach so high a plane as the necessaries of life. When the fall comes, wages go down quicker than prices of food. Therefore I Should say to my family, I purpose to vote for hard money. These are words written to me in a letter recently received, by a friend who is professor of political economy in a prominent Western university. They indicate at once a difficulty in the way of the economist. The topics he discusses are so vital, that any presentation of them is bound to be misconstrued in some quarter. Nevertheless, there seems to be only one course for an honest man, which is to say his word and patiently endure misunderstanding and even malicious abuse. But it may not be out of place for me to state the purpose of this monograph. The aim of the present paper is so clear that only unfortunate experience in the past leads me to explain it in the preface. When my "French and German Socialism" was published, one ill-natured critic complained because my opinions were not distinguished from the opinions I was endeavoring to expound. This criticism was echoed in other places. Now it had not occurred to me that it was necessary' to thrust my opinions upon the reader of the history of French and German Socialism. In reading works covering like ground I had often been annoyed by childish criticism such as must occur to every boy, criticism thrust into the midst of the presentation of some theoretical system, so I resolved to abstain from anything of the kind and thought it sufficient to let the facts speak for themselves. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism.
