Book excerpt: In the years following the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader in September 2015, he and his party had to endure the unprecedented humiliation of accusations of anti-Semitism. The story of how this came about takes the reader into the seemingly remote worlds of Islamic theology, global terrorism and the history of Zionism, revealing how they converged in the party and politics of Comrade Corbyn. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Robin Blick is the author under the pen name of Robert Black of: Workers Councils in the Hungarian Revolution (1966) Moscow Trials Anthology, with B. Pearce and L. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was once a general consensus on the Left that anti-Semitism, derided as 'the socialism of fools', had no place in the Labour movement. No longer. Having led his party to its worst defeat since 1935, Jeremy Corbyn's humiliation was compounded when in October 2020, Labour was found by the Equality and Human Rights Commission to have been in breach of the Equality Act of 2010 on three separate counts of unlawful anti-Semitic acts while he was Party Leader. Corbyn himself was criticised by the Commission for protecting those committing such acts, and had the party whip withdrawn for rejecting its findings. In 2022, Corbyn publicly opposed NATO providing Ukraine with the military means to resist Putin's invasion, and after its massacre of more than 1,000 Jewish civilians on October 7, 2003, refused to condemn Hamas as a terrorist organisation. This book places the Corbyn affair in the context of a general crisis of the global Left, one that has been fueled by a toxic mix of an obsessive anti-Zionism, Islamophilia, political correctness, a loathing of western civilisation, 'critical race theory' and an abandonment of its historical roots in the working class.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Socialism of Fools, Michele Battini focuses on the critical moment during the Enlightenment in which anti-Jewish stereotypes morphed into a sophisticated, modern social anti-Semitism. He recovers the potent anti-Jewish, anticapitalist propaganda that cemented the idea of a Jewish conspiracy in the European mind and connects it to the atrocities that characterized the Jewish experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning in the eighteenth century, counter-Enlightenment intellectuals and intransigent Catholic writers singled out Jews for conspiring to exploit self-sustaining markets and the liberal state. These ideas spread among socialist and labor movements in the nineteenth century and intensified during the Long Depression of the 1870s. Anti-Jewish anticapitalism then migrated to the Habsburg Empire with the Christian Social Party; to Germany with the Anti-Semitic Leagues; to France with the nationalist movements; and to Italy, where Revolutionary Syndicalists made anti-Jewish anticapitalism the basis of an alliance with the nationalists. Exemplified best in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the infamous document that "leaked" Jewish plans to conquer the world, the Jewish-conspiracy myth inverts reality and creates a perverse relationship to historical and judicial truth. Isolating the intellectual roots of this phenomenon and its contemporary resonances, Battini shows us why, so many decades after the Holocaust, Jewish people continue to be a powerful political target.

Book Myth of the Nation and Vision of Revolution

Download or read book Myth of the Nation and Vision of Revolution written by Ignaz Goldziher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what may well rank as the finest political and intellectual history of the twentieth century, the late J. L. Talmon explores the origins of the schism within European society between the totalitarians of Right and Left as well as the split between an acceptance of the historical national community as the natural political and social framework and the vision of a socialist society achieved by a universal revolutionary breakthrough. This, the third and final volume of Talmon's history of the modern world, brings to bear the resources of his incisive scholarship to examine the workings of the ironies of totalitarianism as well as the resources of democracy.

Book Boycotting Israel is Wrong

Download or read book Boycotting Israel is Wrong written by Philip Mendes and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first progressive book to argue that the BDS movement (boycott, divestment and sanctions) against Israel is the wrong way to broker peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; rather, it argues that peace will come ony when both Israelis’ and Palestinians’ legitimate claims to statehood are recognised – by both sides. The BDS movement (boycott, divestment, sanctions) against Israel has gained traction and publicity worldwide for a decade. Yet here, Philip Mendes and Nick Dyrenfurth – two politically progressive commentators – argue that BDS is far too blunt an instrument to use in such a complex political situation. Instead, they critically analyse the key arguments for and against BDS, and propose a solution that supports Israel’s existence and Palestinian rights to a homeland, urging mutual compromise and concessions from both sides.

Book A Forgotten Christian Deist

Download or read book A Forgotten Christian Deist written by Jan van den Berg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a cultural and intellectual biography of a neglected but important figure, Thomas Morgan (1671/2–1743). Educated at Bridgewater Academy, he was active as Presbyterian preacher, medical practitioner, and one of the first who called himself a Christian Deist. Morgan was not only a harbinger of the disparagement of the Old Testament, but also a prolific pamphleteer about things religious, and a publisher of medical books. He received praise for his medical work, but a negative press for his theological visions, and he ended as a forgotten figure in history; this book restores an overlooked writer to his due place in history. It is the first modern biography of Morgan and its readership comprises historians of deism, the enlightenment, the eighteenth century, theology and the church, Presbyterianism, and medical history.

His own master, Wilhelm I, and the Prussian bureaucrats, diplomats, and courtiers with direct access to this first of Bismarck's Wilhelmian nemeses could be at least as obstructionist in Berlin as Franz Joseph and his minions in Vienna. In fact, all too often Bismarck's lack of control over the Prussian elites was in part responsible for the resistance of the Habsburg ruling circle.".

Book The Jewish Decadence

Download or read book The Jewish Decadence written by Jonathan Freedman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Jewish writers, artists, and intellectuals made their way into Western European and Anglo-American cultural centers, they encountered a society obsessed with decadence. An avant-garde movement characterized by self-consciously artificial art and literature, philosophic pessimism, and an interest in nonnormative sexualities, decadence was also a smear, whereby Jews were viewed as the source of social and cultural decline. In The Jewish Decadence, Jonathan Freedman argues that Jewish engagement with decadence played a major role in the emergence of modernism and the making of Jewish culture from the 1870s to the present. The first to tell this sweeping story, Freedman demonstrates the centrality of decadence to the aesthetics of modernity and its inextricability from Jewishness. Freedman recounts a series of diverse and surprising episodes that he insists do not belong solely to the past, but instead reveal that the identification of Jewishness with decadence persists today.
