Book excerpt: Each year, child protective services receive reports of child abuse and neglect involving six million children, and many more go unreported. The long-term human and fiscal consequences of child abuse and neglect are not relegated to the victims themselves-they also impact their families, future relationships, and society. In 1993, the National Research Council (NRC) issued the report, Under-standing Child Abuse and Neglect, which provided an overview of the research on child abuse and neglect. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research updates the 1993 report and provides new recommendations to respond to this public health challenge. According to this report, while there has been great progress in child abuse and neglect research, a coordinated, national research infrastructure with high-level federal support needs to be established and implemented immediately. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research recommends an actionable framework to guide and support future child abuse and neglect research. This report calls for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to child abuse and neglect research that examines factors related to both children and adults across physical, mental, and behavioral health domains-including those in child welfare, economic support, criminal justice, education, and health care systems-and assesses the needs of a variety of subpopulations. It should also clarify the causal pathways related to child abuse and neglect and, more importantly, assess efforts to interrupt these pathways. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research identifies four areas to look to in developing a coordinated research enterprise: a national strategic plan, a national surveillance system, a new generation of researchers, and changes in the federal and state programmatic and policy response.

This is followed by the research on missing and abducted children including the effectiveness of recovery programs such as supermarket campaigns and forensic age profiles. Next how the Internet is used in the victimization of children is explored including tips to help protect children online. Public attitudes toward sex offender registration laws are then reviewed followed by vulnerabilities that include genetic, neuropsychological, temperamental, cognitive, perceptual and social factors. International perspectives on protecting children from violence and global health inequities are then addressed. The book concludes with recommendations for future research. Contributors are noted scholars from a broad range of disciplines. As such, the book appeals to researchers and advanced students in developmental, counseling, clinical, cognitive, evolutionary, and social psychology, as well as sociology, social work, criminal justice, education, and law enforcement.

A systemic literature review was conducted to examine two research questions: 1) What risk factors are correlated with or related to physical abuse among children? 2) What effect does individual therapy-based interventions, compared to family therapy-based interventions, have on physical abuse among children? This thesis provides a foundation base for future research, which gives researchers, policy makers, and professionals in the social work field an opportunity to expand their knowledge of this matter. This project gives an overview of the underlying issues that cause child physical abuse and the interventions that can be used to prevent it from happening. Research found that common correlates that increase the risk of child physical abuse are parental mental health, parental substance abuse, and domestic violence. It was found that effective evidence-based practices that intervene or prevent occurrence or reoccurrence is therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Abused-Focused Cognitive Therapy (AF-CBT), Family Therapy such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and Child Centered Therapy such as Emotion Focused Therapy, Psychotherpay, Attachment Focused Therapy, and Multisystemic Therapy. The knowledge presented can provide the professionals in this field an understanding of the risk factors that cause child physical abuse and implement the effective interventions to alleviate this social problem.
