Book Social Work in London 1869 to 1912

Download or read book Social Work in London 1869 to 1912 written by Helen Bosanquet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Work in London, 1869 to 1912: A History of the Charity Organisation Society The first part of the record has been devoted to chronicling the origin and internal development of the Society itself. It is in a certain sense a domestic record, a sort of family history, which may naturally be of more interest to members of the family than to the outside world. It must lack, too, the human appeal which attends upon revelations of the private life of individuals; we all like to read about a man's early struggles to establish himself in life, especially when he is encom passed about by the machinations of enemies and rivals; and our sympathies are easily roused by his subsequent difficulties with his family - with the sons who get into debt or repudiate his authority, and the daughters who fall in love with the wrong curate or demand a latchkey. It is less stimulating to hear how a Society achieves success in the face of manifold difficulties, and how its committees become insolvent or do bad case work, or take up with unorthodox views, or set themselves up as rivals to their parent; although to those who have taken part in these various crises the anxieties and passions involved may be intensely keen. Our appeal, therefore, is to an inner and an outer circle of readers, and should any find himself upon the wrong track it will be easy for him to move to more congenial ground. Book The Charity Market and Humanitarianism in Britain 1870 1912

This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by Manchester University. This book examines the business of charity - including fundraising, marketing, branding, financial accountability and the nexus of benevolence, politics and capitalism - in Britain from the development of the British Red Cross in 1870 to 1912. Whilst most studies focus on the distribution of charity, Sarah Roddy, Julie-Marie Strange and Bertrand Taithe look at the roots of the modern third sector, exploring how charities appropriated features more readily associated with commercial enterprises in order to compete and obtain money, manage and account for that money and monetize compassion. Drawing on a wide range of archival research from Charity Organization Societies, Wood Street Mission, Salvation Army, League of Help and Jewish Soup Kitchen, among many others, The Charity Market and Humanitarianism in Britain, 1870-1912 sheds new light on the history of philanthropy in the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Book Direct Payments and Personal Budgets

Download or read book Direct Payments and Personal Budgets written by Glasby, Jon and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of the Care Act 2014, this third edition of the leading textbook on personalisation considers key policy changes since 2009 and new research into the extension and outcomes of personal budgets. Direct payments and personal budgets have developed rapidly, transforming the whole of adult social care. In future, all care will be delivered via a personal budget, with direct payments as the default rather than the exception. As the concepts have spread from adult social care to other sectors, the changes have been controversial and difficult to implement. Front-line practitioners and people using services have struggled to make sense of these ways of working in a challenging financial and policy context. This accessible textbook is essential reading for students, practitioners and policy makers in social work and community care services.
