Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine whether perceived social support was associated with self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors, and whether self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors predicts academic success for college students. Gender differences in perceived social support were also examined. Participants were undergraduate students at a large public university in the Southeast enrolled in an introductory psychology course. Data collection was completed through the use of a demographic form, the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List-College Version (Cohen, Mermelstein, Kamarck, & Hoberman, 1985), The Self-Reported Abilities for Health Practices Scale (Becker, Stuifbergen, Oh, & Hall, 1993), and the acquisition of participants' college GPA from official university records. Perceived social support was found to have a significant positive association with self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors. Significant positive associations accounting for at least 10% of the variance in the dependent variable were found between the total score of perceived social support and the mean composite score of self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors, perceived belonging support and self-efficacy for exercise, perceived appraisal support and self-efficacy for psychological well-being, and perceived appraisal support and self-efficacy for responsible health practices. Gender differences in perceived social support were also found with females reporting greater perceived social support. Females reported greater perceived appraisal, tangible, belonging, and self-esteem support. No relationship was found in this study between self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors and academic success. The results from this study may be useful to college students looking to improve their health and for health professionals working to promote health in the college student population. Choosing a social support intervention is likely to increase self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors, which have been linked to their actual implementation (Von Ah, Ebert, Ngamvitroj, Park, & Duck-Hee, 2004).

Book excerpt: This study analyzed the pre-existing data to measure the impact of an academic support program on conditionally admitted first-year students at a small, private, liberal arts college in the Midwest. The academic support program includes a two-credit course based on the components of the College Learning Effectiveness Inventory (CLEI). The CLEI is used as a tool in developing academic success goals in the conditionally admitted students and is taken twice during the academic year; once within the first month of school and once during the third month of the second semester. This instrument measures the psychosocial elements found to be influential in academic success in higher education through using six scales in which students self-report their learning behaviors. This research focused on analyzing the data from four of these scales: academic self-efficacy, organization and attention to study, stress and time press, and class communication. The impact of the academic support program was measured according to the growth of the four scales indicated. Correlations between the scales were also examined to determine for any positive relationships.

Current literature indicates that social support is important for physical and psychological health and well-being. There has been no published research looking at the role of communal meals in collegiate dining centers as sources of social support. This study investigated the possibility that communal meals in a collegiate dining center and eating with other people in these settings may be related to perceived social support, academic success, frequency of family meals, and/or degree of involvement in college extracurricular activities. To investigate these relationships, first-year Kansas State University students living in the residence halls of the Derby Complex (Ford, Haymaker, Moore, and West Halls) were administered a survey about dining center usage habits. The survey included the previously tested Interpersonal Relationship Inventory Short Form by V.P. Tilden (n.d.) as a measure of perceived social support. Participants granted access to their first semester Kansas State University grade point average and semester dining center usage data. Surveys were completed online (n=216) and in paper format (n=89) for a total of 303 participants. There was no significant difference between the demographics of those that completed the online versus paper formats of the survey. Therefore, the online and paper formats of the survey were analyzed together. The data were analyzed for all participants and for males (n=94) and females (n=209) separately. The purpose of this study was to examine differences between students who seek preventive services at a university wellness center and those who do not and explore variables that impact readiness for change and health-related behavior. Participants who used wellness services reported more risky health behaviors and psychological distress than the general sample. Health behaviors from this sample were compared to a national data set and numerous differences between specific rates of behavior were found as well as a difference in overall amount of risk. Wellness service users were more likely to be in the contemplation stage, whereas those from the general sample were more likely to be in the action stage. Participants who were actively making a change were more likely to feel less psychological distress and have more perceived wellness than those in the contemplation stage.
