Book Social Support and Child Maltreatment in the Neighborhood Context

Download or read book Social Support and Child Maltreatment in the Neighborhood Context written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research addressed how social support influences child maltreatment and how the association varies by neighborhood context using a critical literature review and empirical data analyses with longitudinal data. Major findings are as follows: First, the critical literature review found that previous research on social support and child maltreatment had various definitions and operationalization of social support depending on what forms and sources they chose. The associations between social support and child maltreatment vary by each definition and measure of social support. Previous research had limitations to understanding social support and child maltreatment within a broad ecological system and identifying diverse features of social support. Next, prospective associations found between social support and child maltreatment showed that maternal perceived availability of social support predicted a lower risk of CPS involvement. The impact of perceived social support on child maltreatment was both direct and mediated by a lower level of maternal depression and anxiety, and a higher level of self-efficacy. Received support was associated with more negative psychological symptoms among mothers, but did not predict the risk of child maltreatment. Lastly, the effect of social support in reducing child maltreatment was conditioned by neighborhood disadvantage. In less advantaged neighborhoods, social support was more available and its inverse association with child maltreatment was stronger. Maternal positive perception of neighborhood informal control was directly associated with a lower risk of physical abuse parenting behavior, but did not moderate the effect of social support.

Book Neighborhoods Communities and Child Maltreatment

Download or read book Neighborhoods Communities and Child Maltreatment written by Kathryn Maguire-Jack and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores methods for studying child maltreatment in the context of neighborhoods and communities, given their importance in the lives of families. It discusses the ways in which neighborhoods have changed over time and how this that has impacted parenting in the modern context. It also highlights the ways in which policies have contributed to persistent poverty and inequality, which indirectly impacts child maltreatment. An important focus of this volume is to examine the multitude of ways in which the neighborhood context affects families, including structural factors like poverty, segregation, residential instability, and process factors like social cohesion. The volume takes a critical look at the ways in which culture and context affect maltreatment through a community-based approach, and uses this approach to understand child maltreatment in rural areas. The editors and contributors explore innovative prevention approaches and reflect on the future of this field in terms of what remains unknown, how the information should be used to guide policy in the future, and how practitioners can best support parents while being mindful of the importance of context. Addressing an important topic, this volume is of relevance and interest to a wide readership of scholars and students in the social and behavioral sciences, as well as to practitioners and policy makers working with neighborhoods and communities.

This book was released on 1995-08-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important characteristic of abuse-prone families has been found to be isolation from supportive ties. This volume encourages programmes and policies to incorporate social support into abuse prevention. The author delineates the challenges and strategies involved in promoting social support; describes natural and formal social networks; analyzes the social isolation experienced by at-risk families; evaluates the effectiveness of various interventions, such as home visit programmes; and addresses the practical challenges of integrating research, policy and practice. Thompson concludes by suggesting that social support be framed in the larger context of child welfare reform.

Book Toward a Child Centered Neighborhood Based Child Protection System

Download or read book Toward a Child Centered Neighborhood Based Child Protection System written by Gary B. Melton and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2002 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current system of protecting society's children from abuse is failing miserably. In this volume, scholars affiliated with universities and professional associations nationwide pinpoint a better strategy. Their research spotlights neighborhood-based child protection systems and provides a comprehensive approach for creating procedures that meaningfully address child maltreatment. The volume discusses the challenges of moving toward such a system within the current legal, political, and cross-cultural contexts of child protection. Examples of promising applications of a community-based approach are cited. Also cited are the legal and practical structural steps to be taken in creating caring communities that effectively address child abuse and neglect.

Book Family and Neighborhood Contexts of Child Maltreatment

Download or read book Family and Neighborhood Contexts of Child Maltreatment written by Chelsea Smith Gonzalez and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As demographic trends in union formation and fertility have drastically reshaped U.S. families, the attention of researchers and policymakers has focused on the implications of such changes for children's wellbeing. Most of that work has suggested negative consequences across a variety of outcomes, with recent studies exploring child maltreatment as an extreme danger to wellbeing. In addition to the risk factors associated with family instability and maltreatment, sources of support and resilience--within families as well as the communities in which they live--are also of interest to scholars and policymakers seeking to reduce and prevent the maltreatment of children. This dissertation, therefore, consists of three empirical studies that examine family contexts (family instability) and neighborhood contexts (collective efficacy) of child maltreatment among a diverse group of children and their primary caregivers. Informed by theories from sociology, criminology, developmental psychology, and social work, I used longitudinal, multilevel analyses to investigate: 1) the connection and underlying mechanisms between parents' union transitions and trajectories of child maltreatment; 2) whether household composition is associated with the likelihood and frequency of two types of child maltreatment across neighborhoods with differing levels of collective efficacy; and 3) how changes in mothers' co-residential partners alter the risk of child maltreatment based on men's characteristics and the level of neighborhood collective efficacy. Across those three aims, this dissertation's findings reveal that children's family lives and their experiences of maltreatment are dynamic and multi-dimensional. Although family instability seems to increase child maltreatment, that association is nuanced in ways that depend on the type of instability and maltreatment considered. Furthermore, neighborhood collective efficacy can be a buffer that reduces some of the risks of child maltreatment that are associated with family instability. Taken as a whole, this dissertation identifies family contexts in which children may experience maltreatment as well as neighborhood contexts that can protect children and support families that may be struggling.

Book Neighborhood Context and the Development of African American Children

Download or read book Neighborhood Context and the Development of African American Children written by Maria Loreto Martinez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evidence of worsening life conditions, concentration of poverty, and high degree of African American segregation in urban areas has led to a growing interest in how neighborhood contexts effect child development and parenting behavior. This study attempts to understand development in context by focusing on the role of neighborhood influences early in child development and to shed light on the pathways by which family and community resources influence development.

This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are the foundation of the United States, and supporting them is a key component of building a successful future. However, millions of children face health inequities that compromise their development, well-being, and long-term outcomes, despite substantial scientific evidence about how those adversities contribute to poor health. Advancements in neurobiological and socio-behavioral science show that critical biological systems develop in the prenatal through early childhood periods, and neurobiological development is extremely responsive to environmental influences during these stages. Consequently, social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors significantly affect a child's health ecosystem and ability to thrive throughout adulthood. Vibrant and Healthy Kids: Aligning Science, Practice, and Policy to Advance Health Equity builds upon and updates research from Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity (2017) and From Neurons to Neighborhoods: The Science of Early Childhood Development (2000). This report provides a brief overview of stressors that affect childhood development and health, a framework for applying current brain and development science to the real world, a roadmap for implementing tailored interventions, and recommendations about improving systems to better align with our understanding of the significant impact of health equity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most alarming phenomenon in American cities has been the transformation of many neighborhoods into isolated ghettos where poverty is the norm and violent crime, drug use, out-of-wedlock births, and soaring school dropout rates are rampant. Public concern over these destitute areas has focused on their most vulnerable inhabitants—children and adolescents. How profoundly does neighborhood poverty endanger their well-being and development? Is the influence of neighborhood more powerful than that of the family? Neighborhood Poverty approaches these questions with an insightful and wide-ranging investigation into the effect of community poverty on children's physical health, cognitive and verbal abilities, educational attainment, and social adjustment. This two-volume set offers the most current research and analysis from experts in the fields of child development, social psychology, sociology and economics. Drawing from national and city-based sources, Volume I reports the empirical evidence concerning the relationship between children and community. As the essays demonstrate, poverty entails a host of problems that affects the quality of educational, recreational, and child care services.Poor neighborhoods usually share other negative features—particularly racial segregation and a preponderance of single mother families—that may adversely affect children. Yet children are not equally susceptible to the pitfalls of deprived communities. Neighborhood has different effects depending on a child's age, race, and gender, while parenting techniques and a family's degree of community involvement also serve as mitigating factors. Volume II incorporates empirical data on neighborhood poverty into discussions of policy and program development. The contributors point to promising community initiatives and suggest methods to strengthen neighborhood-based service programs for children. Several essays analyze the conceptual and methodological issues surrounding the measurement of neighborhood characteristics. These essays focus on the need to expand scientific insight into urban poverty by drawing on broader pools of ethnographic, epidemiological, and quantitative data. Volume II explores the possibilities for a richer and more well-rounded understanding of neighborhood and poverty issues. To grasp the human cost of poverty, we must clearly understand how living in distressed neighborhoods impairs children's ability to function at every level. Neighborhood Poverty explores the multiple and complex paths between community, family, and childhood development. These two volumes provide and indispensable guide for social policy and demonstrate the power of interdisciplinary social science to probe complex social issues.
