Book Social Studies Education in South and South East Asian Contexts

Download or read book Social Studies Education in South and South East Asian Contexts written by Kerry J Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The education of young people is context bound. This edited volume explores the contexts that characterise South and South East Asia and their influence on social studies education. There is not a single context across this broad geographical expanse, rather different religions, different political systems and different values exert influences that create distinctive programmes that characterise different countries. Yet there are also commonalities such as the post-colonial nature of most of the countries portrayed in this book, determined efforts at establishing new national communities and multiple value systems that lead to distinctive local priorities. There are also voices of resistance in these chapters, recognising the realities of local contexts but also recognising the need for change. Social studies education in these contexts may well be descended from its origins in North America, but in South and South Asian contexts, it has taken on new purposes, new forms and new values. Education researchers, policymakers and postgraduate students in comparative education will find the volume useful in its exploration and comparison of the social studies curricular and reforms that shaped them.

Book Malaysian Media Studies Integrating Perspectives UM Press

Download or read book Malaysian Media Studies Integrating Perspectives UM Press written by Azizah Hamzah and published by The University of Malaya Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume revisits developments in the field of media education and media studies at a time when society is experiencing a ubiquitous networked, digital media environment. Rapid advances in media and communication technologies and the accompanying developments in social, cultural, political, and economic realms pose unexpected challenges to the curricula of long-established media and communication schools. As opposed to rigidly structured nation-based mass media systems of the past century, the new global media sphere celebrates the breaking down of borders – whether spatial, cultural or social. Today, in the second half of the second decade of the 21st century, this problem translates into what, and how to teach students of media, who in all likelihood, are more adept media consumers and producers, than their teachers. In a region where educational institutions and educators don’t transform as fast as media technologies do, there is a need to problematize, and to reflect upon the situation. This edited volume examines critical issues related to media studies at local institutions of higher learning, and includes a sampling of research charting new directions in local media scholarship. Contributions to this edited volume reflect the shared concerns of media educators and researchers in Malaysia and two neighboring countries, Indonesia and Thailand. Three main themes underscore this volume, reflecting their importance to the evolution of media education, and to a certain extent, research as well: • Historical development of media education and training • Current developments and future trajectories of media education in a globalized digital media environment • Analysis of media and society

Ian Shaw considers social work inventions, evidence-based practice, the history of scientific claims in social work practice, technology, and social work research methodology to demonstrate the significant role that scientific language and practice play in the complex world of social work. By treating science as a social action marked by the interplay of choice, activity, and constraints, Shaw links scientific and social work knowledge through the core themes of the nature of evidence, critical learning and understanding, justice, and the skilled evaluation of the subject.
