Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Education The present work is the outgrowth of actual class-room experience in teaching the subject for two years in the State Normal School at Milwaukee and eight years in the State Uni versity of Iowa. Previous to this experience, many of the ideas here expressed had been gradually shaping themselves while the author was teaching and supervising in public schools. All of the material has been carefully tested in junior and senior university classes, and much of it in advanced normal school classes. Portions of several chapters have been given many times in teachers' institutes and associations. The distinct aim, however, has been to produce a text-book of college grade for beginners in the study of educational science. Book Principles of Sociology with Educational Applications Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Sociology with Educational Applications Classic Reprint written by Frederick R. Clow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Sociology With Educational Applications ... The efforts of theological seminaries, schools of philanthropy, schools of business, and schools of education to employ sociological theory as an instrument for the analysis of any kind of social situation, or as a master-key to all of their treasure houses, are destined, I still believe, to result in success. Such success awaits standardization, and that - again expressing merely my own opinion - the university professors will yet give us; they - some of them - will come to the aid of the schools that educate social workers and will trim down the far-ramifying sociological theory to the shape of a tool which these workers can be easily trained to use... In my class every student works on some group or institution with which he is familiar - his practice class, if he has one, or his boarding club, literary society, church, family, neighborhood. As we advance through the principles of sociology he applies them to his own special group and writes a sociological analysis of it by instalments. In this way sociological theory comes to him as an instrument for practical use rather than as a body of doctrine for the delectation of scholars. - American Sociological Society, Publications, Vol. 13, p.68; Clow, "Sociology in the Education of Teachers." While the general application of sociology to technical uses must probably await the appearance of a treatise such as is foreshadowed in the first paragraph above, this volume is designed to serve as a textbook for work such as is described in the second paragraph. To that end it omits several topics which usually find place in an introductory textbook in sociology. The only limit to the students freedom in selecting the group or organization on which he will use the sociological scalpel is that it must be one about which he has, or can get, adequate information. Download or read book Moral Principles in Education Classic Reprint written by John Dewey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Principles in Education Manual training is more than manual; it is more than intellectual; in the hands of any good teacher it lends itself easily, and almost as a matter of course, to development of social habits. Ever since the philosophy of Kant it has been a commonplace in the theory of art, that one of its indispensable features is that it be universal, that is, that it should not be the product of any purely personal desire or appetite, or be capable of merely individual appropriation, but should have its value participated in by all who perceive it. The references entitled 'preparatory' (or their equivalent) will fulfill this prerequisite. These references are to the author's Elements of Psychology, which is in a sense an introduction to the present volume, but any standard course in psychology which gives due emphasis to the laws of mental connections will supply the preparation needed. Book A Text Book in the Principles of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book in the Principles of Education Classic Reprint written by Ernest Norton Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book in the Principles of Education IN the following pages I have endeavored to present in a systematic way the outlines of a theory of education from the point of view of evolution. The evolutionary conception has been applied to educational theory more or less consistently by all writers on the subject since the time of Froebel. The development of more and more scientific knowledge in regard to the history of life, of mind, and of society has, however, made possible constant reconstruction of the general princi ples, in terms of which the process of evolution through edu cation is to be conceived. I have tried to draw into a unified scheme what seem to me the essential features of current thought on this subject today. Book The Principles of Intellectual Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Intellectual Education Classic Reprint written by F. H. Matthews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Intellectual Education No man is born free. We are the slaves of our descent, of our breeding and nurture, of surrounding circumstances. From the moment of our birth to the hour of our death we walk loaded with fetters, which limit our movements, hamper our development, and modify even our essential characteristics. Our life is one long struggle to attain freedom, and if, as the years increase, we to some extent enlarge our liberty, on the other hand new bonds are forged and we become the slaves, not indeed of others directly, but of our own past selves. Of all slavery this is the worst, the most binding, the most intolerable, yet the most unescapable of all. For nothing can really free us from it - pure liberty is impossible. Greater freedom in one direction is balanced by greater servitude in another: our one aim must be to make the inevitable servitude a servitude to what is best under given conditions, a freedom from the bonds that are removable, a binding only by such shackles as may be the noblest out of those which the whole surrounding world may fix upon us. To dream of greater freedom is delusion - a delusion of dangerous import. Our activity is closely circumscribed. Book Principles of Elementary Education and Their Application Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Elementary Education and Their Application Classic Reprint written by Frank P. Bachman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Elementary Education and Their Application This book seeks, first, to set forth the principles of elementary education, and second, to apply these to the work of the elementary school. To establish the principles of elementary education, and to bring to view what is implied in them, a study is made in Part I of the relation between the individual and society, also of the nature of the mental life of the child, of how the child develops, and of how he learns. Part II seeks to determine, in the light of the principles developed, the aim of elementary education, the curriculum of the elementary school, the methods of elementary instruction, and the organization of the elementary school. The effort made to establish the principles of elementary education, the conception held of the inter-relation between the individual and society, the theory of human nature and of human development set forth, the social or national aim of education advanced, the analysis of the learning processes, and the methods of instruction presented are among the distinctive features of this book. The materials offered are sufficient for a three-hour course during two terms or a five-hour course for one term. The book may be used in two ways. First and preferably, it may be followed chapter by chapter. Second, where students purpose to give only a short period to preparation and desire to concentrate more particularly upon class teaching, a course in the Principles and Methods of Elementary Instruction may be given by taking Sec. 4 of Chapter IV, and Chapters V, VIII, and IX. Book Social Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Social Education Classic Reprint written by Colin A. Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Education As suggested above, the experiences described are quite incomplete and fragmentary. Even so, they may be of considerable service to the reader who cares to habituate himself to the social point of view in education. A critical sketch of three famous schools is begun in Chapter III. This is followed by descriptions of school work, which are not meant to represent perfection of either method or attainment, but which, it is believed, succeed in showing some features of the social spirit more completely than do the three examples studied in Chapters III, IV, and V. The two chapters on self-organized group work aim to show the more general features of social organization in the school. The concluding chapters of the book take up some special themes of education and attempt to show to what extent their best teaching depends upon a recognition of social facts.
