Book Social Media and the Baltimore City Fire Department

Download or read book Social Media and the Baltimore City Fire Department written by Jeffrey R. Segal and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an explosion of social media activity in America and throughout the world. The proliferation of the social media has affected public safety organizations in one way or another. Many of the public safety organizations do not have policies in place that provide sound guidance on the social media explosion. The problem is that the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) does not have a social media policy to protect the interest of the BCFD and the citizens that it serves. The expanded use of social media coupled with a strong social media policy will enhance the BCFD's ability to protect the citizens of Baltimore and protect the interests of the BCFD. The purpose of this research was to identify the need for a social media policy and identify ways to enhance the protection of the BCFD through the use of the social media.

Chief Officer: Principles and Practice is designed to help make the transition from company officer to chief officer a smooth evolution. Covering the entire scope of Levels III and IV from the 2009 Edition of NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, Chief Officer combines current content with dynamic features and interactive technology to better support instructors and to help prepare future chief officers to become problem-solving leaders for their organizations. Chief Officer: Principles and Practice has a clear focus on instilling fire fighter safety throughout an organization’s culture. Reducing fire fighter injuries and deaths requires the dedicated efforts of every fire fighter, fire officer, and fire department. The entire fire community must work together to achieve one common goal: to ensure that everyone goes home. Chief officers therefore set the tone for safety in their organization, and this textbook embraces that philosophy. It is with this goal in mind that the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives, developed by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, are integrated throughout the text. The features in this textbook will help students take that extra step toward becoming outstanding chief officers. These features include: • Scenario-Based Learning. You Are the Chief Officer and Chief Officer in Action are found in each chapter to encourage and foster critical thinking skills. • Practical Tips for the Chief Officer. Chief Officer Tips and Voices of Experience essays are integrated into each chapter to provide helpful advice from experienced chief officers. • Level IV Job Performance Requirements. Fire Officer Level IV content is highlighted to discern Level III JPRs from Level IV. • Walk the Talk. Additional activities encourage students to take what they have learned in the chapter and apply it to their own department.

Download or read book Social Media Within North Hays County Fire Rescue written by Kyle Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research also provided policy implications that should be addressed prior to entering the social media realm. A community survey was conducted to determine how widely social media is used within the area and which platforms are the most prevalent. A fire department questionnaire was distributed to determine if and how other departments are using social media for community relations. The results provided guidance in policy development to account for firefighter personal social media pages, as well as the department pages. The results also identified Facebook and Twitter as the predominant social media outlets, each with their own weaknesses and benefits. It was recommended that NHCFR implement social media usage through Facebook and Twitter after creating policies that provide guidelines for its use.

Book Disaster Forensics

Download or read book Disaster Forensics written by Anthony J. Masys and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to uncover the root causes of natural and man-made disasters by going beyond the typical reports and case studies conducted post-disaster. It opens the black box of disasters by presenting ‘forensic analysis approaches’ to disasters, thereby revealing the complex causality that characterizes them and explaining how and why hazards do, or do not, become disasters. This yields ‘systemic’ strategies for managing disasters. Recently the global threat landscape has seen the emergence of high impact, low probability events. Events like Hurricane Katrina, the Great Japan Earthquake and tsunami, Hurricane Sandy, Super Typhoon Haiyan, global terrorist activities have become the new norm. Extreme events challenge our understanding regarding the interdependencies and complexity of the disaster aetiology and are often referred to as Black Swans. Between 2002 and 2011, there were 4130 disasters recorded that resulted from natural hazards around the world. In these, 1,117,527 people perished and a minimum of US$1,195 billion in losses were reported. In the year 2011 alone, 302 disasters claimed 29,782 lives; affected 206 million people and inflicted damages worth a minimum of estimated US$366 billion.
