However, there has been limited success in reducing these impairments and increasing social status through behavioral and pharmacological interventions. A fruitful avenue may be identifying the atypical social and emotional information processes that contribute to the impairments and subsequently developing interventions that target impaired, yet malleable processes. Using social information processing (SIP) theory as a guide, indicators of social and emotional processing and the relationship between these processes and social outcomes were examined.

Book excerpt: This study examined social information processing as a function of level of depression, anxiety, aggression and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Multiple informants were used to identify symptoms of depression, anxiety, aggression and ADHD in 141 fifth grade children in an Iowa middle school. 91 of these students were randomly selected to be interviewed with an instrument consisting of six vignettes depicting social situations relevant to this age group. Four stages of social information processing were studied: (a) interpretation of cues, (b) goal clarification (i.e., goal generation and evaluation), (c)response generation and (d) response evaluation. The role of affect was also studied within the social information processing model.

Book excerpt: Research has used social information-processing (SIP) theory to explain the association between social cognitive deficits among children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and social dysfunction (aggression, low prosocial behaviour, peer problems). Scant research has investigated positive information-processing and social outcomes. This study examined SIP (cue encoding and attributions) of positive social situations among children with ADHD (n=77) and typically developing children (n=48) and explored whether SIP mediated the relation between ADHD symptoms and social outcomes. Results indicated that children with ADHD encoded more overall cues and neutral cues than typically developing children. Typically developing children encoded a significantly higher number of positive and negative cues than children with ADHD. There were no significant differences in intent attributions; however, children with ADHD provided more negative outcome attributions. SIP did not mediate the association between hyperactive-impulsive symptoms and peer problems. Elevated aggression did not moderate the association between SIP and social outcomes.

Frequently perpetrators of human aggression, when arrested and tried in court, resort to a psychiatric defense. But are all such aggressors indeed appropriately psychiatric patients? And if so, what are their particular diagnoses and how do these relate to aggression? Also of concern is aggression directed against self, as evidenced in the rising incidence of suicide among young people or the self-mutilation of patients suffering from certain personality disorders. Both violence directed outward and aggression toward oneself pose considerable challenges to clinical management, whether in the therapist's office or in the inpatient unit. Although we have not been able to find successful deterrents to aggression, a sizeable body of evidence does exist, certainly of a descriptive nature. Such data for psychiatric patients are scattered, however, and can be found in literatures as diverse as the biological, ethological, epidemiological, legal, philosophical, psychological, psychiatric, and crimi nological. Therefore, given the increased frequency with which mental health professionals encounter cases of violence in their day-to-day work, we believed it important that existing data be adduced in one comprehensive volume.
