Book Exploring Social Information Processing of Emotion Content and Its Relationship with Social Outcomes in Children At risk for Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder

Download or read book Exploring Social Information Processing of Emotion Content and Its Relationship with Social Outcomes in Children At risk for Attention deficit hyperactivity Disorder written by Verenea J. Serrano and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often experience social and emotional impairments. However, there has been limited success in reducing these impairments and increasing social status through behavioral and pharmacological interventions. A fruitful avenue may be identifying the atypical social and emotional information processes that contribute to the impairments and subsequently developing interventions that target impaired, yet malleable processes. Using social information processing (SIP) theory as a guide, indicators of social and emotional processing and the relationship between these processes and social outcomes were examined.

Book Social Information Processing in Children

Download or read book Social Information Processing in Children written by Timi Dee Friederichs Jordison and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined social information processing as a function of level of depression, anxiety, aggression and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Multiple informants were used to identify symptoms of depression, anxiety, aggression and ADHD in 141 fifth grade children in an Iowa middle school. 91 of these students were randomly selected to be interviewed with an instrument consisting of six vignettes depicting social situations relevant to this age group. Four stages of social information processing were studied: (a) interpretation of cues, (b) goal clarification (i.e., goal generation and evaluation), (c)response generation and (d) response evaluation. The role of affect was also studied within the social information processing model.

Book An ANALYSIS OF POSITIVE SOCIAL INFORMATION PROCESSING AGGRESSION AND PEER FUNCTIONING AMONG CHILDREN WITH ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

Download or read book An ANALYSIS OF POSITIVE SOCIAL INFORMATION PROCESSING AGGRESSION AND PEER FUNCTIONING AMONG CHILDREN WITH ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER written by Shanelle Skye Henry and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has used social information-processing (SIP) theory to explain the association between social cognitive deficits among children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and social dysfunction (aggression, low prosocial behaviour, peer problems). Scant research has investigated positive information-processing and social outcomes. This study examined SIP (cue encoding and attributions) of positive social situations among children with ADHD (n=77) and typically developing children (n=48) and explored whether SIP mediated the relation between ADHD symptoms and social outcomes. Results indicated that children with ADHD encoded more overall cues and neutral cues than typically developing children. Typically developing children encoded a significantly higher number of positive and negative cues than children with ADHD. There were no significant differences in intent attributions; however, children with ADHD provided more negative outcome attributions. SIP did not mediate the association between hyperactive-impulsive symptoms and peer problems. Elevated aggression did not moderate the association between SIP and social outcomes.

Book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents written by Somnath Banerjee and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ADHD in children and adolescents is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which is recognized by the clinicians all over the world. ADHD is a clinical diagnosis based on reliable history, reports from home and school and a physical examination to rule out any other underlying medical conditions. ADHD can cause low self-esteem in the child and impair quality of life for the child and the family. It is known that ADHD is a chronic illness and that clinicians needed to use chronic illness principles in treating it. The last 10 years have seen an increase in the number of medications that have been approved for the treatment of ADHD. This book has tried to address some of the issues in ADHD.

Book Handbook of Aggressive and Destructive Behavior in Psychiatric Patients

Download or read book Handbook of Aggressive and Destructive Behavior in Psychiatric Patients written by Robert T. Ammerman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scarcely a day passes without the media detailing some form of human aggression, whether it be on its grandest scale in the form of war, random bombings and shootings in the streets, torture in a prison camp, murder by gangs, wife abuse resulting in the murder of the husband, or the physical abuse of children, sometimes resulting in their death. Frequently perpetrators of human aggression, when arrested and tried in court, resort to a psychiatric defense. But are all such aggressors indeed appropriately psychiatric patients? And if so, what are their particular diagnoses and how do these relate to aggression? Also of concern is aggression directed against self, as evidenced in the rising incidence of suicide among young people or the self-mutilation of patients suffering from certain personality disorders. Both violence directed outward and aggression toward oneself pose considerable challenges to clinical management, whether in the therapist's office or in the inpatient unit. Although we have not been able to find successful deterrents to aggression, a sizeable body of evidence does exist, certainly of a descriptive nature. Such data for psychiatric patients are scattered, however, and can be found in literatures as diverse as the biological, ethological, epidemiological, legal, philosophical, psychological, psychiatric, and crimi nological. Therefore, given the increased frequency with which mental health professionals encounter cases of violence in their day-to-day work, we believed it important that existing data be adduced in one comprehensive volume.

Book Hyperactive Children

Download or read book Hyperactive Children written by Carol K. Whalen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public and professionals alike are deluged with well-intentioned but poorly substantiated treatises on hyperactivity and its supposed causes and cures. From some parts of the spectrum come the assertions that hyperactivity is best understood as a purely physiological problem, perhaps a compensatory reaction to underarousal in the central nervous system, or perhaps a specific dietary allergy. From other quarters come the claims that hyperactivity is largely in the eye of the beholder and that children are the victims of slipshod labeling practices. In this climate of controversy, there is a clear need for a responsible and authoritative survey of what we know about contextual variables in the identification and treatment processes of hyperactivity in children. This volume is an attempt to fill this need. -- from Preface.

Book Social Behavior and Skills in Children

Download or read book Social Behavior and Skills in Children written by Johnny L. Matson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That children are capable of pathology—not only such conditions as ADHD and learning disabilities, but also such "adult" disorders as anxiety and depression—stands as a defining moment in psychology’s recent history. Within this recognition is the understanding that the social skills deficits that accompany these disorders must be targeted for assessment and treatment to ensure optimal functioning in school, with peers, and in later transitions to puberty and adulthood. Social Behavior and Skills in Children cuts across disciplinary lines to clarify the scope of assessment options and interventions for a wide range of disorders. A panel of leading scholars reviews current research, discusses social deficits unique to specific disorders, and identifies evidence-based best practices in one authoritative, approachable reference. This volume: Discusses theoretical models of social skills as they relate to assessment and treatment. Analyzes the etiology of social behavior problems in children and the relation between these problems and psychopathology. Reviews 48 norm-referenced measures of social skills in children. Examines the range of evidence-based social skills interventions. Addresses challenging behaviors, such as aggression and self-injury. Focuses on specific conditions, including developmental disabilities, conduct disorders, ADHD, chronic medical illness, depression, anxiety, and severe psychopathology. Social Behavior and Skills in Children is an essential reference for university libraries as well as a must-have volume for researchers, graduate students, and clinicians in child, and school psychology, special education, and other related fields.

Book The Extent to which Inference making Ability Predicts Social Competence in Children with Varying Symptoms of ADHD

Download or read book The Extent to which Inference making Ability Predicts Social Competence in Children with Varying Symptoms of ADHD written by Madeleine E. Schwartz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience higher rates of social difficulties than their typically-developing peers. Because interventions for social difficulties are generally ineffective, research must examine new malleable targets for intervention. The ability to make social inferences is one such target. This study used Social Information Processing theory as a foundation .

Book Attention Deficit Disorder Misdiagnosis

Download or read book Attention Deficit Disorder Misdiagnosis written by Barbara C. Fisher and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-12-29 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is one of the least understood medical conditions. With no specific test available, misdiagnosis is common and the results can be devastating for both the parents and the child. Because no one can agree on a single definition for the disorder, confusion is rampant and treatment is only mildly successful at best. Attention Deficit Disorder Misdiagnosis addresses these problems in a systematic and logical fashion. It presents a battery of tests for properly diagnosing ADD, stresses its relationship to brain behavior and proposes practical treatment solutions. Written by an expert in the field who also happens to be the mother of an ADD child, it presents a unique perspective on this complex yet all too pervasive disorder. This is an essential text for doctors, parents and any individual working with an ADD child or adult. It will also help professionals in related disciplines approach ADD as a biochemical medical disorder and understand the reasons for its inherent complexity and frequent misdiagnosis.

Book Handbook of Interventions that Work with Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Handbook of Interventions that Work with Children and Adolescents written by Paula M. Barrett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-01-09 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Interventions that Work with Children and Adolescents, considers evidence-based practice to assess the developmental issues, aetiology, epidemiology, assessment, treatment, and prevention of child and adolescent psychopathology. World-leading contributors provide overviews of empirically validated intervention and prevention initiatives. Arranged in three parts, Part I lays theoretical foundations of “treatments that work” with children and adolescents. Part II presents the evidence base for the treatment of a host of behaviour problems, whilst Part III contains exciting prevention programs that attempt to intervene with several child and adolescent problems before they become disorders. This Handbook presents encouraging evidence that we can intervene successfully at the psychosocial level with children and adolescents who already have major psychiatric disorders and, as importantly, that we can even prevent some of these disorders from occurring in the first place.
