Book Forests and Livelihoods

Download or read book Forests and Livelihoods written by S. Barraclough and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-11-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social dynamics of deforestation and of forest protection are the ongoing interactions amongst social actors and processes that determine the use and management of forests. Based on a vast amount of research and detailed case-studies in Brazil, Central America, Nepal and Tanzania as well as several papers dealing with wider themes and regions, this book argues that most current discussions of increased rates of deforestation and perceived accompanying environmental crises are overly simplistic. Institutional reforms and policy measures that have been undertaken in developing countries usually failed to protect either the forests or people's livelihoods. Technical solutions to deforestation are only one element in what are essentially political questions. The central issue is not how to halt deforestation but rather how to manage forest areas and natural resources in order to meet social goals on a more equitable and sustainable basis. Conventional wisdom that attributes deforestation primarily to peasant ignorance and population growth is questioned as are other single factor explanations such as market and policy failures.

Book Assessing Forest Ecosystem Health in the Inland West

Download or read book Assessing Forest Ecosystem Health in the Inland West written by David L. Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland West, their historical origins, assessments of available management tools, and analyses of the various choices available to policymakers. Its goal is to help people understand the Inland West forests so that public policies can reflect a constructive and realistic framework in which forests can be managed for sustained health. This resource is the product of a scientific workshop where 35 participants, including scientists, resource managers, administrators, and environmentalists, addressed the forest health problem in the Inland West. Synthesis chapters integrate the diverse knowledge and experience which participants brought to the workshop. They identify and link together many of the ecological, social, and administrative conditions which have created the forest health problem in the West. The book is unique in that it reflects a process that fostered the use of academic research, field realities, and industrial knowledge to define an interdisciplinary problem, establish rational policy objectives, and set-up “do-able” management approaches. The following topics are analyzed: Assessing forest ecosystem health in the Inland West Historical and anticipated changes in forest ecosystems in the Inland West Defining and measuring forest health Historical range of variability as a tool for evaluating ecosystem change Administrative barriers to implementing forest health problems Economic and social dimensions of the forest health problem Fire management Ecosystem and landscape management

Book Assessing Social Vulnerability to the Impacts of Climate Change on Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book Assessing Social Vulnerability to the Impacts of Climate Change on Forest Ecosystems written by Joseph E. Reber and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is expected to alter the composition and distribution of earth's forests. The impacts of these ecological changes will have many social consequences. The individuals and households that will be most affected will likely be those that derive value from forest resources. This thesis proposes a methodology for identifying human populations that may be differentially impacted by forest related climate changes with the use of a social vulnerability framework. Dynamic vegetation change models were used to quantify exposure to climate change related forest changes. Sensitivity and adaptive capacity were calculated using an indicator-based approach. The social (sensitivity and adaptive capacity) and biophysical (exposure) systems were related with a measure of economic forest dependence. The components were combined to produce a measure of vulnerability to forest related climate changes. The results of this assessment are useful for informing management decisions and the proposed methodology allows for the assessment of spatially indirect hazards.
