Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Evolution of Religion These chapters were originally read to a small group of persons meeting in a private parlor in Boston, under the auspices of the local branch of The Free Religious Association of Amer ica. Not all which was written was read at any of these meet ings, but often many pages were omitted in order that the lecture might be followed by questions and discussions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Evolution and the Development of Religion The following pages are the results of a study of religion from the standpoint of social psychology. It is, therefore, clearly a subjective interpretation of religion. Much is said that is undeserved against the religious psychologist for devoting so little attention to the supernatural. An attack of this sort is due to an ignorance of the meaning of psychology or a thoughtless disregard of the scope belonging to it. The psychologist in the field of religion does not discuss the supernatural at length because it lies without his province. It lies in the realm of the theologian. The psychologist deals only with human nature, and when he discusses religion he is shut up to its human side. However, on this point, although I do not regard myself as entitled to be called a psychologist, I do not mind saying that I am what William James called himself, "a crass supernaturalist." Book The Romance of Evolution and Its Relation to Religion Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Evolution and Its Relation to Religion Newport, R. I., ten years at Hartford, Conn., and four years at Sharon, Mass. In 1904 he built a house at Greenfield, Mass., where he made his home with his daughter and her fam ily until his death on February 16, 1910. Mr. Kimball was a man of a wide range of reading, thorough, exact and untiring. He was sometimes truer to his convictions than to his convenience and preferred the approval of his own conscience to the applause of the multi tude. He was accustomed to speak his mind with great freedom not only upon the philo sophical and religious beliefs which he cher ished, but also upon the vexing social problems of his generation. He was upright and down right, courageous and persistent. He was also remarkably productive, for in spite of his busy life of study and of pastoral service he wrote unceasingly upon the subjects and in behalf of the causes which enlisted his enthusiasm. A graphic article of his appeared in the Spring field Republican on the day before his death, and another in the Christian Register on the day after his death. Book The Growth of Religion a Study of Its Origin and Development Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Growth of Religion a Study of Its Origin and Development Classic Reprint written by Joseph McCabe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of Religion, a Study of Its Origin and Development IN the very large literature which we now have concern ing the origin and development of religion, there is either too generous an element of Speculation or the facts are arranged in an order which does not plainly suggest the actual order of evolution. In this work an attempt is made to distribute the known facts in such succession that they do present, as far as possible, the real obro nological development of human culture. The most primitive fragments of our race are rigorously separated from higher tribes, and the stage of religious development at which they linger is very carefully determined. In the selection of these primitive peoples the teaching of modern anthropology is closely followed, and many tribes which are usually quoted as primitive are withheld until a later stage. By this procedure a view of the origin of religion is reached which differs from that presented in the majority of recent works on the subject. Book Evolution and Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolution and Religion Classic Reprint written by Arthur J. Dadson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Religion I AM afraid I shall lay myself open to the charge of having adopted a very ambitious title for this book but the size alone is sufficient to convince any one that it is not intended to cover the extensive fields of Evolution and Religion. My object is not to teach evolution, far less theology; but, by placing some of the leading facts of each subject side by side, to call attention to their natural connection. Through the labours of Wolff, Lamarck, and especially Darwin, belief in creation has given place to the idea of gradual development in the world of life; as had previously been the case in regard to the inorganic world. Since the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species, the theory of evolution has invaded every department of thought and enquiry, and has revolutionized men's views upon many of the most important subjects. Scientifically, creation is a word now almost without meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Religion in Human Evolution

Download or read book Religion in Human Evolution written by Robert N. Bellah and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice An ABC Australia Best Book on Religion and Ethics of the Year Distinguished Book Award, Sociology of Religion Section of the American Sociological Association Religion in Human Evolution is a work of extraordinary ambition—a wide-ranging, nuanced probing of our biological past to discover the kinds of lives that human beings have most often imagined were worth living. It offers what is frequently seen as a forbidden theory of the origin of religion that goes deep into evolution, especially but not exclusively cultural evolution. “Of Bellah’s brilliance there can be no doubt. The sheer amount this man knows about religion is otherworldly...Bellah stands in the tradition of such stalwarts of the sociological imagination as Emile Durkheim and Max Weber. Only one word is appropriate to characterize this book’s subject as well as its substance, and that is ‘magisterial.’” —Alan Wolfe, New York Times Book Review “Religion in Human Evolution is a magnum opus founded on careful research and immersed in the ‘reflective judgment’ of one of our best thinkers and writers.” —Richard L. Wood, Commonweal

Book The Development of Religion

Download or read book The Development of Religion written by Irving King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Religion: A Study in Anthropology, and Social Psychology As the subtitle indicates, this volume is a study in the social psychology of primitive religion. It is, however, far from complete as first planned. It was the original intention to include a number of topics which are of great interest to the student of primitive religion, such as the development of sacrifice and the origin and development of birth, marriage, death, and burial ceremonies. Not only have some topics been omitted; those which are here offered to the public are far from completely worked out. They have been written at irregular intervals during the past eight years, in the midst of many duties which tended inevitably to destroy the continuity of thought as well as to render a thorough working out of individual problems well-nigh impossible. Under these circumstances it is but natural that, as the work has proceeded, there should have been a change in interest and, to some extent, in point of view. Book The Positive Evolution of Religion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Positive Evolution of Religion: Its Moral and Social Reaction Again, they have heard Of Positivism as a scheme of the philosophy of the sciences, and they find us discuss ing the economy of the Home, the education of the young and the functions in society of men and women, or, it may be, debating the Irish question, or the problem Of China, of Egypt, of India, or of South Af rica. They think that such political debates do not oh trude themselves on the scientific addresses at the Royal Society or the Royal Institution. The effect of this may be somewhat miscellaneous to those who do no more than take a casual and superficial glance at Positivism as a whole. But it is unavoidable - nay rather, it is the true force of our position. The central idea of Positivism is simply this - that, until our dominant convictions can be got into one plane with our deepest affections and also with our practical ener gies; until our most sacred emotions, whether in our homes or in the depths of the Silent heart, have been correlated with our root beliefs and also with our noblest ambition, - that is, until one great object is ever present to intellect, heart, and energy - human life can never be sound, healthy, or harmoniously ordered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Evolution of Religion In this volume have been stated the final results of fifty years devoted to the study of religion in its varied manifestations. Accepting for many years the generally accredited interpretations of Christianity, I have gradually diverged from them as the result of a growing interest in anthropology, ethnology, psychology, and comparative religion.
