Book excerpt: **"The Social Center: A Means of Common Understanding"** is a notable address delivered by Woodrow Wilson, then Governor of New Jersey, at the First National Conference on Civic and Social Center Development in Madison, Wisconsin, on October 25, 1911. In this speech, Wilson explores the concept of social centers as vital components in fostering community engagement and promoting civic understanding. In his address, Wilson advocates for the establishment of social centers as spaces where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together to engage in meaningful dialogue, share ideas, and work towards common goals. He emphasizes the importance of these centers in bridging social divides and enhancing communal bonds, arguing that they play a crucial role in the development of a more cohesive and informed society. Wilson’s insights reflect his broader vision for progressive social reform and his belief in the power of communal institutions to address social challenges and promote democratic values. This address is significant for its forward-thinking approach to civic engagement and its influence on the development of social and community programs in the early 20th century.

Book Activism on the Web

Download or read book Activism on the Web written by Veronica Barassi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-22 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activism on the Web examines the everyday tensions that political activists face as they come to terms with the increasingly commercialized nature of web technologies and sheds light on an important, yet under-investigated, dimension of the relationship between contemporary forms of social protest and internet technologies. Drawing on anthropological and ethnographic research amongst three very different political groups in the UK, Italy and Spain, the book argues that activists’ everyday internet uses are largely defined by processes of negotiation with digital capitalism. These processes of negotiation are giving rise to a series of collective experiences, which are defined by the tension between activists’ democratic needs on one side and the cultural processes reinforced by digital capitalism on the other. In looking at the encounter between activist cultures and digital capitalism, the book focuses in particular on the tension created by self-centered communication processes and networked-individualism, by corporate surveillance and data-mining, and by fast-capitalism and the temporality of immediacy. Activism on the Web suggests that if we want to understand how new technologies are affecting political participation and democratic processes, we should not focus on disruption and novelty, but we should instead explore the complex dialectics between digital discourses and digital practices; between the technical and the social; between the political economy of the web and its lived critique.

Book Creating a Democratic Public

Download or read book Creating a Democratic Public written by Kevin Mattson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During America's Progressive Era at the beginning of the twentieth century, democracy was more alive than it is today. Social activists and intellectuals of that era formed institutions where citizens educated themselves about pressing issues and public matters. While these efforts at democratic participation have largely been forgotten, their rediscovery may represent our best hope for resolving the current crisis of democracy in the United States. Mattson explores the work of early activists like Charles Zueblin, who tried to advance adult education at the University of Chicago, and Frederic Howe, whose People's Institute sparked the nationwide forum movement. He then turns to the social centers movement, which began in Rochester, New York, in 1907 with the opening of public schools to adults in the evening as centers for debate over current issues. Mattson tells how this simple program grew into a national phenomenon and cites its achievements and political ideals, and he analyzes the political thought of activists within the movement&—notably Mary Parker Follett and Edward Ward&—to show that these intellectuals had a profound understanding of what was needed to create vigorous democratic practices. Creating a Democratic Public challenges us to reconsider how we think about democracy by bringing us into critical dialogue with the past and exploring the work of yesterday's activists. Combining historical analysis, political theory, and social criticism, Mattson analyzes experiments in grassroots democracy from the Progressive Era and explores how we might foster more public involvement in political deliberation today.
