Book Development and Its Diverse Aspects

Download or read book Development and Its Diverse Aspects written by Ahmad A Nasr and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development is the agenda and the priority of almost all nations. They try to provide their people with a better way of living and better life-chances. In this attempt, they concentrate on the economic and political systems of their societies and try to improve them to achieve the target. The general feeling is that if one increases national wealth, raises physical quality of life and gives freedom to the populace to govern themselves, one achieves prosperity. The past three centuries have shown that nations have made tremendous efforts to boost their economic productions and refine the governing systems. They initiated industrialization, increased capital formation and developed sophisticated technology to change the physical conditions of their societies. They further democratized their socio-economic and political institutions to create a conducive atmosphere for development. Some claimed that they had achieved the level of development, others were in the process and still others have failed to do so. The reality is that the so-called development has failed to provide peaceful, harmonious, contended and dignified life to humans. Still the majority of the people have no sufficient means to live with dignity and honour, they are living below poverty line, are exploited, suppressed and subjugated by those who are wealthy, affluent and enjoying power. Development as generally perceived, by and large, brings luck to small portion of the population who no doubt have all the amenities of life, live luxuriously and enjoy all the privileges of society but the rest of the population are deprived of basic requirements of life. The Human Development Report 1992 reported that the rich have grown richer and the poor have become poorer due to the outcome of universal development efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Banking describes a way of value-driven banking that has a positive social and ecological impact at its heart, as well as its own economic sustainability. Although it has a long and successful history, it has arguably never been more topical than it is now in the aftermath of the latest financial crisis. Most Social Banks came out of this crisis not only unscathed but much stronger and bigger than they were before. And contrary to their conventional peers, none of the Social Banks had to be bailed out with public funds. This increasingly attracts the interest not only of clients searching for safe and sensible ways to deposit their funds but also of conventional banks that begin to understand the potential of a more socially oriented approach towards banking. Social Banks and the Future of Sustainable Finance is the first book to deliver a comprehensive and detailed overview about the past, present and possible future of Social and Sustainable Banking for researchers, students and a professional audience. The authors are experts from research and practice and have bee involved in Social Banking for many years. Thus they combine state-of-the-art expertise with valuable insider knowledge. The book covers the following topics: the history of Social Banking, the need for Social Banking in the current economy, the particular issues of managing a Social Bank as business enterprise, Social Banking products and services, the special role of donations and foundations for financing change, the opportunities and challenges for Social Banks lying ahead, and concrete directions for the future of Social Banking. But in the past three decades the conventional pattern of structural transformation has changed, with the services sector growing faster than the manufacturing sector. This raises critical questions about the ability of developing economies to close productivity gaps with advanced economies and to create good jobs for more people. At Your Service? The Promise of Services-Led Development (www.worldbank.org/services-led-development) assesses the scope of a services-driven development model and policy directions that can maximize the model’s potential.

Book Pay Without Performance

Download or read book Pay Without Performance written by Lucian A. Bebchuk and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The company is under-performing, its share price is trailing, and the CEO gets...a multi-million-dollar raise. This story is familiar, for good reason: as this book clearly demonstrates, structural flaws in corporate governance have produced widespread distortions in executive pay. Pay without Performance presents a disconcerting portrait of managers' influence over their own pay--and of a governance system that must fundamentally change if firms are to be managed in the interest of shareholders. Lucian Bebchuk and Jesse Fried demonstrate that corporate boards have persistently failed to negotiate at arm's length with the executives they are meant to oversee. They give a richly detailed account of how pay practices--from option plans to retirement benefits--have decoupled compensation from performance and have camouflaged both the amount and performance-insensitivity of pay. Executives' unwonted influence over their compensation has hurt shareholders by increasing pay levels and, even more importantly, by leading to practices that dilute and distort managers' incentives. This book identifies basic problems with our current reliance on boards as guardians of shareholder interests. And the solution, the authors argue, is not merely to make these boards more independent of executives as recent reforms attempt to do. Rather, boards should also be made more dependent on shareholders by eliminating the arrangements that entrench directors and insulate them from their shareholders. A powerful critique of executive compensation and corporate governance, Pay without Performance points the way to restoring corporate integrity and improving corporate performance.
