Book Social Auditing In The Supply Chain

Download or read book Social Auditing In The Supply Chain written by Mia Mahmudur Rahim and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: This paper aims to examine the role of social auditing in legitimising the relationship between the buyer and supplier firms rather than strengthening corporate accountability in the global supply chain.Design/methodology/approach: Applying case study methodology and drawing on Suchman's theory on societal legitimacy, it is argued that social audits are artefacts of legitimacy, and global firms dominate the buyer-supplier relationship across the supply chain. The analysis is based on data collected from different secondary sources, including Walmart's corporate sustainability reports.Findings: Using Walmart's relationship with Tazreen Fashions Limited around the Tazreen factory fire incident as a case study, it explains that the practices which attempt to symbolically demonstrate accountability from social audits need to shift to a more continuous and sincere demonstration of accountability through the social audit process. For this to occur, the cognitive and pragmatic approaches that international buyers have previously used in auditing their supply firms' social responsibility are no longer sufficient to achieve societal legitimacy. Instead, a moral turn needs to underpin the intentions and actions of these buyers to maintain legitimacy and demonstrate accountability across the supply industry in developing economies.Originality/value: The findings of the study answer the questions raised in the extant literature about the expectation from social auditing and whether social auditing serves to ensure corporate accountability. The paper contributes to the policymaking discussion of how social auditing can be configured to include a legal provision to ensure that social auditing is not a parroting tool for corporations.

Book Private Regulation of Labor Standards in Global Supply Chains

Download or read book Private Regulation of Labor Standards in Global Supply Chains written by Sarosh Kuruvilla and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private Regulation of Labor Standards in Global Supply Chains examines the effectiveness of corporate social responsibility on improving labor standards in global supply chains. Sarosh Kuruvilla charts the development and effectiveness of corporate codes of conduct to ameliorate "sweatshop" conditions in global supply chains. This form of private voluntary regulation, spearheaded by Nike and Reebok, became necessary given the inability of third world countries to enforce their own laws and the absence of a global regulatory system for labor standards. Although private regulation programs have been adopted by other companies in many different industries, we know relatively little regarding the effectiveness of these programs because companies don't disclose information about their efforts and outcomes in regulating labor conditions in their supply chains. Private Regulation of Labor Standards in Global Supply Chains presents data from companies, multi-stakeholder institutions, and auditing firms in a comprehensive, investigative dive into the world of private voluntary regulation of labor conditions. The picture he paints is wholistic and raw, but it considers several ways in which this private voluntary system can be improved to improve the lives of workers in global supply chains.

Book Be Prepared

Download or read book Be Prepared written by Jens Schnügger and published by . This book was released on 2024-02-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to prepare well for a social audit, it is important to understand what the legislation is trying to achieve in the supply chain. Taking Germany as an example, it can be seen that two different ministries deal with supply chain legislation. One is the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (acts internally) and the Other is the Federal Ministry for Economic and Development (acts externally). While two federal ministries deal with the different aspects of the law, every company is expected to deal with the law in its entirety, responsibly and with the different aspects. The vast majority of companies do not look inwards.

Book Social Audit Regulation

Download or read book Social Audit Regulation written by Mia Mahmudur Rahim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the concept of social audit and lifts it beyond the role of functioning largely as a management tool. The book proposes a system in which social audit is regulated so as to provide a mechanism for effectively promoting corporate accountability in society. Taking this as its theme, this book provides both a conceptual explanation of the developmental perspectives of social audit regulation and empirical evidence of the impact of social audit practice from different parts of the world. It is the first book to explore the issues and challenges related to the development of effective social audit regulation.

Book Supply Chain Governance for Social Sustainability

Download or read book Supply Chain Governance for Social Sustainability written by Nandita Farhad and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD thesis approaches the phenomenon of supply chain governance for social sustainability in the ready-made garment industry in Bangladesh. This research is based on a study of eight large multinational corporations (e.g. clothing brands and retailers) and their ready-made garment suppliers. The purpose of this research is to understand how supply chain governance mechanisms and governance structures improve social sustainability performance when stakeholders are engaged. The study identifies four main governance systems, namely, market-based, hierarchical controlbased, collaborative multi-stakeholder-based and relational cross-sectoral-based. These governance systems are employed in the supply chain by the multinational corporations in combination with different stakeholders, such as suppliers, multi-stakeholder-initiatives, and non-government organisations. The study focuses on the challenges faced by the multinational corporations to ensure social sustainability, whilst at the same time, incorporating suppliers’ viewpoints on the consequences of different governance systems for social sustainability. This research shows the choice of governance structures from market-based, hierarchy-based, collaboration-based and relational-based depend on the cost of managing relationships with the stakeholders and potential risks of governance in a given situation. An effective governance structure for a multinational corporation in a particular context is determined by how well the structure supports governance mechanisms to reduce associated transaction risks that results from potential opportunistic behaviour of the suppliers. In this research, it is argued that governance structure provides the platform for practicing a set of governance mechanisms. The study claims that social sustainability governance incorporates three mechanisms with separate outcomes: one consists of buyer-driven control-based mechanisms which include codes of conduct, supplier assessment and monitoring, and supplier training for regular social compliance; the second consists of multi-stakeholder-based governance mechanisms for structural compliance when unexpected problems occur, for example, building collapse, electrical and fire safety risks emerge; and the third comprises cross-sectoral governance mechanisms when the multinational corporations involve with non-government organisations for social development of the garment workers and community by facilitating drinking water, health-hygiene, education, and so on. This thesis contributes to the Sustainable Supply Chain Management literature by expanding knowledge of supply chain governance through bringing an understanding of governance mechanisms, governance structures and stakeholder engagements for social sustainability. As the demand for supply chain governance for social sustainability are growing, this thesis can help responsible corporate sourcing managers to develop a deeper understanding of how supply chain governance can affect social sustainability.

Book Social Compliance Audits and Multinational Corporation Supply Chain

Download or read book Social Compliance Audits and Multinational Corporation Supply Chain written by M. Azizul Islam and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the use of social compliance audits in the supply chain of multinational corporations (MNCs). Particularly, we explore the use of such audits in assessing and managing the working conditions of factory workers in the garment industry in a developing nation. Through a range of interviews with MNCs' internal auditors, with commissioned external auditors and with representatives of the suppliers in Bangladesh, this study finds that social compliance audits become ritual strategies and are not a primary means of advancing workers' rights. Drawing on the concept of surrogate accountability, the study suggests that to create real change in workers' conditions and in order to hold MNCs and their suppliers accountable, some form of surrogate (government, non-governmental organisations or media) intervention is necessary. This is, we argue, preferable to leaving it in the hands of 'markets' and simply waiting for another major incident such as Rana Plaza to stir public concern. This study contributes to the literature by investigating how social compliance audits are undertaken by MNCs sourcing products from a developing nation, what motivations drive the adoption of such audits, and what, if anything, are the likely outcomes from the process.

Book Social Audits and Global Clothing Supply Chains

Download or read book Social Audits and Global Clothing Supply Chains written by M. Azizul Islam and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides some preliminary insight in relation to the use of social audits by the global clothing and retail companies that source garment products from developing nations. In the era of globalisation, companies based in developed nations have transferred their production locations to many parts of the developing nations. At the same time, there are widespread global stakeholder concerns about the use of child labour, inadequate health and safety standards and poor working conditions at many of these production locations. Social audits appear to be a tool used by companies to monitor working conditions and to ensure that manufacturing takes place in a humane working environment. The study finds that companies use social auditing in order to maintain their legitimacy within the wider community.

Book Responsible Business Operations

Download or read book Responsible Business Operations written by Jayashankar M. Swaminathan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents state-of-the-art research on responsible operations practices. The book identifies the challenges and opportunities arising from the shift towards responsible business operations and examines these issues through the lenses of operations management, emphasizing the supply chain transformations associated with these changes. Developing a responsible business model presents a great opportunity for firms to differentiate in the marketplace through innovative models and insights around responsible operations and supply chain management. To do so, companies in many industries are changing their practices around sourcing materials, supplier compliance around processes and labor, scientific and sustainable approaches to farming in emerging countries, managing counterfeiting risks, and public health management. Responsible Business Operations: Challenges and Opportunities is divided into three sections. Section 1 focuses on environmental responsibility for companies. It also explores alternative energy solutions for both the developed and developing world, as well as worldwide carbon footprint reduction efforts. Section 2 is dedicated to social responsibility, with chapters covering topics including improving agricultural food chains and humanitarian challenges for businesses. Finally Section 3 promotes ethical responsibility, analyzing ways to improve supplier compliance to product, process and ethical standards.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility in Supply Chains

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility in Supply Chains written by Yawar, Sadaat Ali and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management of social issues in supply chain is increasingly becoming challenging and complex. The major challenges for a firm to counter social issues come from both internal and external stakeholders. Thus, firms adopt strategies which, while meeting the stakeholder demands also ensure performance improvements. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is adopted by the firms to address social and societal issues while achieving performance in their supply chains. Supplier development (SD) by the virtue of bringing performance improvement is a core element in implementing CSR. However, research at the intersection of CSR, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and supplier development rarely give insights into the interactions between economic and social performance in supply chains.

The main aim of this dissertation is to bring three different streams of literature (CSR, SCM and SD) and provide conceptual and empirical insights while investigating the role of SD as CSR in achieving performance improvements. Firstly, a conceptual framework based on the literature review is proposed providing more in-depth comprehension of CSR in supply chain. Secondly, based on the previous framework, a conceptual framework focusing on supplier development is proposed adding to the understanding of buyer-supplier relationships and its impact on performance outcomes. Finally empirical investigations into the Dairy supply chain in India using the constructs from these two frameworks, provide insights into the role of SD as CSR. Thus, this dissertation provides insights into the management of social issues in supply chains and makes valuable contributions at the intersection of CSR, SCM and SD.

Book Monitoring the Monitors

Download or read book Monitoring the Monitors written by Jodi L. Short and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supply chain auditors provide companies with strategic information about the practices of suppliers, yet little is known of what influences auditors' ability to identify and report dangerous, illegal, and unethical behavior at factories. Drawing on insights from the literatures on street-level bureaucracy and on regulatory and audit design, we theorize and investigate the factors that shape the practices of private supply chain auditors. We find evidence that their reporting practices are shaped by an array of social factors, including an auditor's experience, gender, and professional training; ongoing relationships between auditors and audited factories; and gender diversity on audit teams. By providing the first comprehensive and systematic findings on supply chain auditing practices, our study suggests strategies for designing more credible monitoring regimes.

Book Behind the Rise of Global Supply Chains

Download or read book Behind the Rise of Global Supply Chains written by Daniel Vaughan-Whitehead and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global supply chains have become a dominant business model that has generated millions of jobs in developing and emerging economies. At the same time, we do not know what is behind this rise, as well as the effects that purchasing practices between buyers and suppliers have on wages and working conditions. This book is the first to address the root causes of poor working conditions within global supply chains themselves, in terms of living wages, working hours, types of work contract, and health and safety, not only in the garment sector, but also in other sectors, such as food, electronics and furniture. From a unique survey among nearly 2,000 suppliers all over the world, this volume also presents fresh evidence on purchasing practices and identifies their impact on wages and working conditions. It is essential reading for all interested in promoting social sustainability, and reveals the modus operandi behind the rise of global supply chains, as well as providing evidence on both effects and root causes. The book will also help to close the circle by identifying changes in policies and practices that could lead to more decent wages and working conditions along more sustainable global supply chains.

Book excerpt: Forest management auditing is expanding from its traditional focus on forest management, stewardship and Chain of Custody certification to more innovative topics such as ecosystem services, forest carbon credits, Non-Wood Forest Products, wood energy and Fair Trade certification. Forest managers, auditors and project developers require a new range of skills, capacities and expertise to monitor these issues. This book outlines the market-based tools that are required by such professionals to ensure corporate social responsibility in the forestry sector. It shows how a mutual learning process between established forest certification processes and innovative markets is needed. It addresses key topics such as High Conservation Value (HCV) approaches, the role of independent certification versus due diligence process and the engagement of smallholders and SMEs. Beginning with a market and policy analysis, the book fosters a deeper understanding of standards, methodologies and auditing techniques. Numerous case studies are included from a wide range of contexts, including both temperate and tropical forests in developed and developing countries. Overall, the book analyses all the steps towards forest management and forest products and services certification.
