Book excerpt: Social anxiety is the fear of social situations in which one feels they are being evaluated. One consequence of social anxiety may be increased drinking behaviors. For example, college students who experience an excessive amount of social anxiety may drink to cope with the negative effects of anxiety. The current study manipulated social anxiety by asking socially anxious female college students, to make choices about alcohol consumption while they were alone or in a group with two confederates. Alcohol choices were measured using the Multiple Choice Procedure (MCP), a well-studied self-report choice measure of relative reinforcer efficacy. Results found no difference in anxiety scores between the social anxiety and control conditions and higher crossover points on form A of the MCP. Limitations and implications of these results are discussed.
