Believing that the social life of the Ciceronian Age and the Imperial Period has been treated in exhaustive detail while that of the Republic has been comparatively neglected, the author has chosen the first half of the second century B. C. for her subject. She has chosen her sources chiefly from Plautus and Terence, but also from Polybius, Livy, and Cato's "De re rustica." She feels that _the comedies of Plautus and Terence give more information of Roman private life than has generally been believed. The preface states that in nearly every instance the material obtained from the comedies is paralleled and substantiated by references from Cato, Polybius, Livy and similar sources. The chapter headings indicate the nature and extent of the book: Town and Country Houses; Women and Marriages; General and Higher Education; Slaves; Freedmen and. Clients; Finance and Industry; Religion; Morals and Character. Whether all scholars agree with the deductions drawn, there will, however, be few to dispute the excellence of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social and Private, Life at Rome in the Time of Plautus and Terence To assemble as far as possible the source evidence on social and private life at Rome during the first half of the second century B. C., and from this evidence to draw certain conclusions which will give a clearer understanding of the habits of thought and the feelings of the average citizen of the time is the purpose of this study. While literary sources for Roman life in this period of the Republic are less available than, for the Ciceronian age or for the Empire, a knowledge of the earlier period is of importance not only for its own sake as a critical moment in the history of Graeco-Roman civilization, but as a basis for comparison with later developments. The very fact of the scarcity of material and the consequent lack of information in regard to this subject may be given as the chief reason for the present work. Roman life in the Imperial period has received a large amount of attention and been treated in exhaustive detail by modern writers, but the question of Roman life in the period of the Republic has been comparatively neglected. Warde Fowler in his Social Life at Rome in the age of Cicero embodies in his chapters a series of delightful sketches of conditions at the close of the Republican period, but the book throws little light on the century preceding the Ciceronian age, and in any case is of little value for reference purposes. The larger works on Roman life, such as Marquardt's Privatleben der Romer, devote some attention to Republican conditions. The statements, however, are scattered and more or less general, and the source references given are far from complete. Book excerpt: The Life of Comedy after the Death of Plautus and Terence documents the ongoing popularity of Roman comedies, and shows that they continued to be performed in the late Republic and early Imperial periods of Rome. Playwrights Plautus and Terence impressed audiences with stock characters as the young-man-in-love, the trickster slave, the greedy pimp, the prostitute, and many others. A wide range of spectators visited Roman theaters, including even the most privileged members of Roman society: orators like Cicero, satirists like Horace and Juvenal, and love poets like Catullus and Ovid. They all put comedy’s varied characters to new and creative uses in their own works, as they tried to make sense of their own lives and those of the people around them by suggesting comparisons to the standard personality types of Roman comedy. Scholars have commonly believed that the plays fell out of favor with theatrical audiences by the end of the first century BCE, but The Life of Comedy demonstrates that performances of these comedies continued at least until the turn of the second century CE. Mathias Hanses traces the plays’ reception in Latin literature from the late first century BCE to the early second century CE, and shines a bright light on the relationships between comic texts and the works of contemporary and later Latin writers.
